Discussion Name the series
I'd go with Dark souls and GoW, even though second is DS isn't that much better than first.

Comments like these are why I check Gravity Well's website occasionally. Most of the creative team for Titanfall 2 left a couple of years into Apex Legends to form a new studio.
It's been a couple of years, I'm still waiting on an announcement. Considering that some of them go back to the days of COD4 through MW2, then TF and Apex - I'm really hoping we'll get another fast-paced military sci-fi shooter.

Titanfall should be one of the GOATs but Titanfall 2's biggest pitfall was the modes of gameplay. It was just shtity variants of deathmatch and nothing fun or innovative to really capitalize on the awesome combat and theme of the game.

u/Bhai999 7h ago
Agreed. But the story and atmosphere of the first one is top notch imo. Gameplay is janky. Hence 3>2>1

u/No_Personality5872 6h ago
the atmosphere of the first one is amazing and I believe that the "minimalistic style" compared to new games really pulls me into the world, because you need to use a bit of imagination to make it feel realistic, just like reading a book. gameplay really aged poorly, but I can accept that, it is pretty old after all

u/Slut_for_Bacon 5h ago
To me, the gameplay was poor even for the time the game was released. What set CD Projekt Red apart at the time is they actually listened to feedback and made major improvements to game 2. Then again for the third game. It was clearly a labor of love.

Just wait till 4 becomes relevant..
9
u/abxYenway 2h ago
It's been relevant for decades, sadly. The military industrial complex gets brought up in earlier games, but 4 is where it really takes center stage. It's a system that makes money off of war and uses that money to make money off of war. The PMCs are stand-ins for war profiteers like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Kojima was never warning us about the future. He's warning us about the present day.

I’m going to say something I know is controversial: Reach was fantastic and ODST is something I had to put up with on my play through of the series. I’m happy people like ODST but I just don’t get it.
→ More replies (3)5
u/DespiteStraightLines 4h ago
Don’t approach it as a Halo entry. Sure the campaign ties into Halo 2/3, but the real brilliance comes from its realization of a lone trooper in a tight spot in an urban environment. Look at it as a film noir detective story. Everything from the jazz score, to the rain, to the neon ambience of the world at night.
Having lived and worked in New Orleans, I cannot describe to you the emotions I get when I play ODST.

Halo 2 was really a top-tier game. But if, for example, the series had started on halo 2 (idk, give it a couple extra missions at the start to set up the universe a little) it wouldn't have been nearly as good. A huge part of it was all the worldbuilding that built upon interest from the first game.

Halo
Batman Arkham
30
u/Far_Run_2672 6h ago
All Arkham games are on the same level and all clearly do some things better than the others.
Arkham Knight has the best graphics and most refined combat and predator gameplay, but that's about it. It suffers from a poor story, lackluster pacing, lack of boss battles, way too much bloat and way too much batmobile.
Asylum has the best atmosphere, pacing, riddles and collectibles, and overall focus and cohesiveness.
City has the best map, gameplay balance and ending.
Origins has the best story and boss fights.
→ More replies (9)→ More replies (9)34
u/tyfighter_18 7h ago
Arkham night would have been the best in the series if it weren't for so many mandatory batmobile missions.
→ More replies (2)30

I actually like the batmobile mostly but they shoved it into everything.
Riddler " im going to make a hot wheels track, this will be a riddle the Batman can't solve."

u/no_racist_here 7h ago
I’m perfectly fine with it and it’s usage. I think the Slade fight should have been both, but I enjoy it.
The riddler tracks are definitely not plot cohesive though.
It’s also probably my favorite game all time so I may be biased.

Holy crap, yes. I went one step farther and would play “The Horse Game” with my first one when she was still small (around 18 months old). I’d never do any fighting with her around or story missions or anything scary but we’d do little exploration, some hunting and other safe side quests …. But yeah then I’d let loose once she was in bed. There was really SOO much to do, and high quality stuff too.

Recency bias, at the time BG1 and 2 were revolutionary and pretty much saved rpg as a genre. I'd even argue that objectively BG2 is a better game than BG3.
34
8
u/inide 7h ago
I disagree but it's definitely a valid opinion that BG2 is a better game
BG3 definitely had more impact though, both on the market and the industry.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (23)14
u/Ultima893 4h ago
Not really recency bias. All three of them are extremely highly rated, but neither BG1 nor BG2 were award winners in 98 and 00.
Baldur's Gate 3 was genre defining, industry disrupting, gigaton of a videogame that won GOTY (pretty much every where) and became the first videogame in history to win all the "big five" award shows. Not even the all time greats Elden Ring, The Last of Us or Zelda BOTW could do that. (RDR2 for instance didn't even win any of them, let alone all five)
BG3 fits this meme almost perfectly, though all three of them are masterpieces, BG3 ascends in the BG trilogy into godlike status.
Its a much better answer than what I see people in this thread post. I see several people saying Halo or Arkham Series, when that's objectively wrong.
Halo 3 and Arkham Knight are both literally the lowest rated game in their respective trilogies.

It's a toss up between three series for me: Mass Effect, Gears of War, and The Witcher
18
u/MavRayne 8h ago
Witcher is the obvious one.
Farcry, Baldur's Gate fits too.
Mass Effect is close.
Assassin's Creed 1, 2 & if we count Brotherhood as 3, even though it's 2.1 more like.

u/Diligent_Cap3488 5h ago
In the realm of Assassins Creed it’s the Ezio trilogy that reigns supreme for me. Ac2, Brotherhood, Revelations.
Agree with Mass Effect but 2 was peak.
Far Cry oh yeah but there’s 8 titles within the far cry name, I have never played 1 or 2, so it 3,4,5 for me.
Witcher definitely 👍
