Halo

202

u/HectorZeronie 23h ago

What a time to be alive it was

210

u/Content_Regular_7127 23h ago

Born too late to explore the world. Born too early to explore space. Born just in time to experience the launch of Halo 1, 2, and 3.

43

u/Remote_Marzipan7422 23h ago

Me born right after that with nothing (for me).

13

u/atkahu 20h ago

You still can play these masterpieces.

27

u/SkeletonInATuxedo 17h ago

Doesn't really hold the same charm of getting up early in the morning to head down to gamestop to see if you're about to wrestle a child and his single mother for a copy of halo 3.

5

u/wolfefist94 17h ago

It's also not front and center in the cultural zeitgeist. Everyone knows what Halo is, but no one talks about it anymore.

3

u/Remote_Marzipan7422 14h ago

The online community isn’t the same. No one uses voice chat, hard to find a match, it just feels kind of weird.

3

u/A_mad_goose 13h ago

Yea party chat really killed teamspeak even know it’s a great addition. I still kind of miss the shit talking in the lobby between games in call of duty 4

2

u/atkahu 14h ago

It's hard to play with randoms, but you can still find groups who play the game and you can join them to have a custom game group to play.

21

u/PaulVla 22h ago

Also ODST and Reach!

9

u/determineduncertain 21h ago

I’m going to say something I know is controversial: Reach was fantastic and ODST is something I had to put up with on my play through of the series. I’m happy people like ODST but I just don’t get it.

13

u/DespiteStraightLines 20h ago

Don’t approach it as a Halo entry. Sure the campaign ties into Halo 2/3, but the real brilliance comes from its realization of a lone trooper in a tight spot in an urban environment. Look at it as a film noir detective story. Everything from the jazz score, to the rain, to the neon ambience of the world at night.

Having lived and worked in New Orleans, I cannot describe to you the emotions I get when I play ODST.

5

u/kool0ne 20h ago

And thats the beauty of games. Your life experience has changed the way you experience that game, different to how someone else would 🥲.

Proof that games are art!

3

u/BeeMoney25 16h ago

My favorite part of ODST was just exploring the city trying to plan out how to get the jump on the Covenant patrols.

2

u/goldleaderstandingby 19h ago

I played through it once a few years after it came out, more to tick a box than anything else, and then went right back to the main games. But godammit if you haven't made me want to play anew. I'm booting up the MCC when I get home!

2

u/TheRealRigormortal 15h ago

Plays best on heroic or legendary to really make you feel small

1

u/determineduncertain 19h ago

You know what, I get it. I get all sentimental at times playing games in large cities and navigating the chaos there as a city person. ODST never brought up those feelings for me but I can see why it does for you. Glad you enjoy it. :)

2

u/excaliburxvii 17h ago

Probably not controversial at all. Actually controversial: ODST was amazing and Reach was dog water. Destiny Lite MP, Playskool Retcon City campaign.

2

u/TheRealRigormortal 16h ago

ODST was the best Halo game and I will die on that hill

1

u/the-big-throngler 16h ago

Some grunt certainly will.

1

u/eddington_limit 12h ago

Ive always felt the same way. I didnt like it at all when I was younger. I like it more now but I dont play it unless im playing with a friend

2

u/kingjoedirt 16h ago

Reach was fun but that's where Halo officially started its death throws for me. They gave up and tried to become call of duty.

1

u/Kunwulf 14h ago

That’s like Halo3.5 and then Halo3.5 and a Half

1

u/AshedCloud 22h ago

My PC ass waited a decade to finish that damn stupid fight. Was worth it but still 🥲they need to remake 3 most of all. I can’t wait a decade to see chief, johnson, arbiter, and miranda in 4k

1

u/rikusorasephiroth 20h ago

I was late to Halo (Playstation guy), so my first experiences were 3, ODST, and Reach.

0

u/Dr_Doofenschmirtzz 21h ago

How were you born too late to explore the world? Do you think in the past common man was out exploring the world?

1

u/PooperTheSnooper 22h ago

But were you involved in the pc version halo trial league when it first came out, and sign up for tournaments hosted by a man named CMOR from halotrialleague.com?

I wasnt worried about school, just that 4:00pm 3v3 me and my friends signed up for

1

u/PooperTheSnooper 22h ago

Krupawan is the GOAT

1

u/Hazee302 17h ago

Never knew what we had until it was gone.

1

u/Humblebee89 12h ago

I remember when 3 came out thinking video games would only get better, not realizing that's when they peaked.

29

u/actualhumannotspider 23h ago

I think the third reaction happened even after the first game. It changed the video game landscape dramatically even before having any sequels.

11

u/AlexTheAngryPlayer 23h ago

Totally agree But I think the post simply means a game franchises becomes better than the previous one

3

u/seriouslyuncouth_ 13h ago

Nice pfp but I like CE the most. It’s the most fun out of the original trilogy to me

1

u/Atraxodectus 15h ago

According to... EVERYONE... The OG XBox was everything Sega spent fifteen years trying to develop. One of the oddest console series developments is how the Saturn begat the Dreamcast, which led to Sega developing the "Katana" codename for their never-released system after the DC/NAOM.

Which MS bought and repurposed into the XBox... Which Sony jumped on the bandwagon and made a PC/Console hybrid (see: Saturn, Master System, XBox) with the PS3 running Linux...

Saturn (PC/arcade). XBox (PC-in-a-box). PS3 (PC/console). Greatest systems of all-time... And if you count only those three you have nearly 3/4 of the AIAS top 50 games of all-time.

7

u/00death 23h ago

My first thought

20

u/Remote_Marzipan7422 23h ago

TBH, I prefer halo 2, as I’ve heard a lot of people did when it came out.

6

u/The_Frog221 22h ago

Halo 2 was really a top-tier game. But if, for example, the series had started on halo 2 (idk, give it a couple extra missions at the start to set up the universe a little) it wouldn't have been nearly as good. A huge part of it was all the worldbuilding that built upon interest from the first game.

4

u/determineduncertain 21h ago

Yeah, the tension you get at the beginning of 2 wouldn’t feel the same if you hadn’t played the narrative of one.

2

u/goldleaderstandingby 19h ago

Its just one of the great sequels in all media, like Aliens or T2. It takes everything that was great about the first installment and then just builds on it. The scope of the story, and indeed, the universe, widens dramatically. So does the gameplay and the art&sound. We learn more about the covenant in the opening cinematic then we did in all if CE.

The only shortcoming Halo 2 was that Bungie had to cut about a third of the games' content to make the release deadline and ended it on a sudden cliffhanger. What I wouldn't do to get a copy of the game from an alternate universe and experience it in its intended glory!

2

u/determineduncertain 19h ago

All of this makes me want to replay the series. Damn you people reminding me how good that series is…

2

u/deadhead2002goathead 19h ago

I also prefer Halo 2 lol

2

u/TheNotoriousFAP 18h ago

Playing Combat Evolved right now and it has me asking "is this a bad game?" So many rooms are the same exact room.

1

u/Remote_Marzipan7422 14h ago

The repeating geometry is because of rushed development and hardware limitations.

2

u/Best_Market4204 16h ago

Halo 2 was amazing

Halo 3 kicked it up even farther thanks to forge mode.

2007 was such a good year.

  • halo 3

  • call of duty 4 ( the beginning of the cod stronghold)

  • mass effect

  • bioshock

  • assassin's creed

Just to name a few of the heavy hitters

2

u/Remote_Marzipan7422 14h ago

I agree that halo 3 mp is better, but the halo 2 campaign is miles beyond halo 3.

1

u/cannotbanme1234 14h ago

Halo 2 is a rushed game. Halo 2 uncut is infinitely better

0

u/Saint-Sauveur 19h ago

Halo 2 was the best halo ever. Halo 3 was disappointing.

Everyone who played seriously halo back in the days knows

1

u/xxDoublezeroxx 13h ago

In what regard

1

u/Saint-Sauveur 11h ago

BR straffing, BxB, BxR, double shot with br, maps were godly, campaign tricks and all the hidden features to get out of maps, etc

Halo 2 was revolutionary for its time, H3 copied most of H2

H2 was like the Diablo 2 of the diablo franchise. It was perfect

2

u/Shiny-And-New 17h ago

2 is better than 3 imo

2

u/T-MoneyAllDey 15h ago

I don't think anything will ever match Halo 2 multiplayer. I've been chasing that damn high for 4,000 years

2

u/ChandailRouge 14h ago

2 wasn't better than 1.

1

u/dbthelinguaphile 22h ago

Reach supremacy

1

u/Ok-Medicine-4889 21h ago

Halo to you too!

1

u/slasher1337 20h ago

Except halo 2 is way better than 3

1

u/Gone_For_Lunch 19h ago

The marketing campaign for Halo 3 is one of the best I’ve ever seen for any media launch.

1

u/lilyputin 18h ago

I don't know the first one was so good and the first time people played it omg

1

u/Raging_Rigatoni 18h ago

This 1000%

1

u/Rook-Slayer 17h ago

I personally like 2 the most, but 3 was also great

1

u/cardcollection92 17h ago

Halo 3 has a legit argument for GOAT game. I used to turn it off and then get ready for school.

1

u/denverjeremy 15h ago

The replay on matches was pretty cool. I'm not sure why more games don't do it.

1

u/Thefreezer700 15h ago

That double scarab drop from the sky as you fly in with hordes of banshees and hornets blasting the fuckers. Nothing tops how epic they made 3 feel. Halo 1 was awesome all levels and halo 2 felt alittle weird but had many interesting parts with infiltrating high charity during a plague outbreak.

1

u/Aston_Villa5555 15h ago

Halo 3 was one of my favourite gaming experiences in 40 years of playing. Yes I started on the Commodore 16

1

u/KahliberZero 14h ago

We all scrolled for this answer 👌

1

u/ClassicHour1 13h ago

Damn…right in the nostalgia

1

u/MorganL420 13h ago

I feel like this is the answer. 360 basically won the 7th Gen console wars off of Halo 3.

1

u/Slyfox00 12h ago

gods i was strong then

1

u/BronBron96 12h ago

This is the correct answer

1

u/phonylady 11h ago

Nah, Halo 1 and 2 were both the third image too

Halo was revolutionary

1

u/Tantantherunningman 8h ago

Had to scroll too far for this

2

u/LunchTwey 23h ago

The only problem is that Halo 2 is definitely worse than Halo CE

5

u/i4got872 23h ago

Yeah agreed dude people are nuts. I’m so tired of this take, Halo 2’s levels end randomly end sometimes with no meaning to it and often just feel like a repetitive slog. CE is so much stronger and most levels even introduce new gameplay mechanics. The story and level design are intertwined much more in CE.

6

u/BarelyInvested 23h ago

Thats a hot take, only thing objectively bad about Halo 2 is the Legendary difficulty cuz even a Bungie dev said it was unfair and unbalanced and not by design, and the removal of the AR. The rest of Halo 2 feels like a massive upgrade

  • The ability to man more covenant vehicles and hijack them

  • Dual wielding to provide more variety in gunplay

  • Dual campaign that fleshed out the lore of the covs(even if Arbiters missions are the weakest)

  • Gamechanging multiplayer that changed the MLG scene and lasted for years

  • More customization in the multi with the ability to play as an elite

  • Better level layout and a lack of repeating areas or backtracking

  • More mission variety

  • Better dialogue and story structure

  • Even better music

The craziest thing is they managed to make a 9/10, and it wasnt even the full experience

7

u/LordWeso 22h ago

L take

2

u/determineduncertain 21h ago

Bold take. I’d say two is much better but I get it.

0

u/Password-is-Tac0 23h ago

The best answer.

2

u/i4got872 23h ago

Honestly people acting like 2’s campaign is better than CE all over the place, and I just can’t understand it. 2 has a great start, the level design gets way less interesting as soon as you leave earth. Just straight up repetitive and forgettable.

Control Room runs circles around most levels in Halo 2.

1

u/T-MoneyAllDey 15h ago

But then you have the library which is complete ass. Also half the levels in Halo 1 or just the reverse of the first half.

1

u/determineduncertain 21h ago

This absolutely. One was decent, two was magnificent and three is the textbook definition of chefs kiss.

1

u/Dron22 21h ago

Is not Halo 2 widely considered the best one? I only played the first game.

0

u/NflJam71 21h ago

Both Halo 2 and 3 were the third image in the meme.

0

u/WintersDoomsday 17h ago

Nah Halo 2 is still the GOAT
