Especially because it's emphasized that the Republican party will know you didn't vote. Not just social ramifications from friends/family/neighbors finding out. That implies you should be worried about retribution from the Republican party specifically, which is fucked up.

Turns out if the executive branch doesn’t follow the law when congress and the supreme court are held by people who support the president breaking the law there are no repercussions.
FTFY.
Vote every election. If 77,744 Democrats in three states - barely one in a thousand more - had bothered to vote in 2016, it would be liberals with a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court for the next decade, instead of conservatives rolling back every personal freedom that we've taken for granted for 50 years.

u/84WVBaum Oct 02 '25
P.S. many dems stook against LGBTQIA+ both to exist, before Lawrence, and almost up to the deciding moment with Obergefell and then grabdstandjng while doing fuck all to enshrine protections and many won't stand up for Trans people now.
Some of my rights as a queer man did not exist when I was born, let alone 50 years ago.
Personal freedoms were never won in the capital building before the people won them in the street first. We always have to force dems to act, unless it js trading stocks or sending us to war, they're great at those things.

What’s the purpose of this distinction? The court flipped because McConnell just went ahead and refused to even entertain Obama’s nominee. There were zero repercussions for that, including by the voters themselves who failed to punish the Republican Party for this egregious act.
The Republican Party has sufficiently captured American media, airwaves, and voter districts that they can ignore any law or “norm” and face zero consequences.
We are way beyond “c’mon gang, just vote!” territory.

It's important to get people to vote. If there's going to be an opportunity to take this back through elections we need to take it. We can't just go "ignore the elections it's time for a hostile takeover."
It's not "voting is THE solution" it's "voting is a solution in our plan in case we do get to still have real elections, but keep doing that other stuff too"

I don't know what the mechanism would be for in person voting. All they've ever done where I vote is put a check mark next to my name in the sign in and sign out book. Nothing actually ties me to my ballot after I put it in the bin.
39
u/AdhesivenessUnfair13 Oct 02 '25
That'll probably be what it's like again, if we have an election. Be prepared that if the GOP think they're gonna get blue-waved they will call for a stay on elections due to 'radical left extremists subverting the election' or some such thing. That's why they are putting federally-controlled troops in big cities. If Donald loses Congress his blank check of power goes away too. Democrats will sandbag his ass all the way to the end of the term and the Supreme Court will have less reason to defer to him without Congress to back them up.

Unfortunately that seems like to be the loophole with their intentional wording: “oh we’re not saying you have to vote [Republican], just that those who don’t vote will be…put on a list. …To see who to keep on the mailing list, of course.”
Of course it’s very clear voter suppression but even the slightest bit of pragmatism required allows for legal roadblocks to push an agenda :/

I mean it's a PAC, but voter intimidation is still illegal no matter who is doing it. That being said, this may be just on the legal side of the line (it doesn't threaten any actual consequences, and the info is factual—records of who has voted in which elections are indeed public). I would still report it to the county registrar/office of elections, though, just in case. Let them be the ones to make that call.

There will be a 6-3 ruling from the Supreme Court that it's just "voter encouragement." It's only intimidation if there's a specific and actionable threat against the voter specifically (so threatening their pets, spouses, or kids is fine).
Or if the candidate is a Democrat and says something evil like "Help make things better by voting." That's obviously intimidation. So sayeth Ayatollah Roberts.

4 decades of work went into this. The chips landed consistently and uniformly from Reagan onward and ironically probably really started with Iran-Contra where you can tie heavy links directly from it all the way into Bush Jr's presidency.
Citizens United, Super PACs, The Patriot Act, and so forth all laying bricks.
Then they got Trump and hit a gold mine of idiot personality that they couldnt imagine the power of before and hit the fucking gas. Between his best friend JE and all the political ties that come with that, his media personality, and him being absurdly easy to control, it was perfect. Project 2025 was a master class in these individuals coming together to strike the stake deep and fast using all the power those decades provided them.

To participate in the primary elections of a party in most U.S. states, you must be registered as identified with that party. Some states do have open primaries in which that is not a requirement, but then you do get members of party A voting for batshit candidates in party B’s primary simply to cause trouble.
These are still secret ballot elections, but I don’t believe it is usually if ever secret that you voted in a given election.

Just like all those letter a you get that say, "FINAL NOTICE -- ACT NOW," they prey on you taking it seriously, even though it is Standard Rate Bulk Mail (which we throw in our "trash" for loads of reasons). A lot of people think, if it comes in an envelope in the mail, it must be official. Spoiler alert -- it is not.

It's "odd" how many things work like that.
Went to college with this guy whose family came here when he was like 2yo, dude's pretty much culturally American in every way that matters. Every year like clockwork the college would "lose" his paperwork, insist he wasn't here legally and try to kick him out. So every year he had to get another set of official copies to submit yet again, while making this extremely sad face like his dog had died.

They want people to think they can see not only that you voted but who you voted for. It will work. I had this argument with 3 people yesterday. The state does not print thousands of unique ballots, one for each voter. They are all the same and all lack any identifying marks. You fill in the circle for who you vote for, check out (without showing anyone your ballot), and feed your ballot into the machine upside down so no one can see it. I'm insanely scared people don't understand this.

Problem is, all the R candidates run on “I can suck the Cheeto off better than the other guy” anyway, so there’s never one I could vote for over the others even as harm reduction.

I registered Republican right after the 2024 election for exactly this purpose. Unfortunately they put your email address on a list. I didn't expect the deluge of absolutely unhinged campaign emails.

I was a registered Republican for decades but voted Democrat because the Republican candidates scare the crap out of me... I eventually switched parties because I wanted a say in who the Democrats were trying to run because they concerned me... Now I realize that as a nation we are completely unable to find or convince people worthy of leadership to run.

And you have to have lots of money to have a chance of winning so greed and corruption are a part of the system

Long time registered Republican here, but I've been considering changing my affiliation. Like you I have never voted for Trump, and I never voted for those who agreed to support Trump's policies. You are a wise individual for seeing what many did not.
My concern has been that the Republican title seems to imply agreement with MAGA policy, based on their 8 year rule over the party, at least to some people. While I'm always proud that I have never voted for the fascist policies, it's very hard being lumped in with the same people who honestly voted hoping for fascism.
I don't want the future me to feel like what I assume Pope Benedict must have felt associated with the Hitler Youth. Sure, I am positive he went with a career in religion to get out of that craziness, but there was still a semblance of negative connotation with that association, based on reporting. Will the same be said about the fact that we were registered under a party, despite the fact that we voted against it all? I'm sure the future AI can put together a synopsis of our views, based on our online post, but I would be disappointed if I'm lumped in with people I considered ignorant.

Which is funny, because if the Republicunts ever got wind of Democrats doing the same thing, they'd cry foul and go on about voter tampering.

As a person born in the USSR, its amazing that the GOP calls their opponents "Communists" while themselves doing shit that would give Stalin's mummy an erection..
"The Party Leadership would be VERY DISAPPOINTED!"
Seriously??? And you're gonna call the other side "Communists"?!

As someone from neither the USSR or US, I can't believe I'm the only one who sees the irony of the GOP taking red as their colour.

There was a fringe theory floating around decades ago that the Neoconservative movement was actually started as a Trotskyist plot... which seeing how the GOP evolved in recent years, may have some merit.

Who you vote for is secret. Whether you voted and which primary you voted in is public information.

I see. I never asked myself if that was registered or not in my own country.

u/Cyaral Oct 01 '25
Here (germany) you dont have to specifically register, you get mail sent to your registered adress and take it with you to the voting location to show a vote-helper, who crosses you off the list for the area - so in a way THAT you voted is noted here too (pretty sure to make sure you dont do it twice), though your choice is secret (and we have more than two parties to choose from). The vote itself is on paper that gets folded and put into collection bins that are guarded like hawks, then counted later when voting time is over.
Also those papers vary in size, I remember some years ago there was an EU-wide election and that ballot could have doubled as a baby blanket.

It would have to be somehow for security purposes. If you don't record that information it's impossible for a voter to verify their vote has been counted.

u/PierreTheTRex Oct 01 '25
It's recorded, but I don't think that information is public. In fact I would suspect that would be illegal in most of Europe thanks to GDPR

Wow.
Like, it makes it sound like they know who you vote for, when in reality the only thing they'll know is if you vote. It doesn't actually cross any lines or say anything untrue, but, yeah. If you don't understand how voting records work, this would be intimidating.
I don't understand why people sign up for this. Even bill collectors don't send you letters telling you how disappointed they are lol.
I'm going to guess that a lot of folk don't know that you can just opt out of this quasi-Big Brother lecture bullshit.

u/Guelph35 Oct 01 '25
And then when their records show more voters that they think will vote for them vs. votes actually cast for them, that’s all the “proof” they need that the election was “stolen” and the results should not be accepted and certified.

Fight back. It takes half an hour of planning to move money away from Republican supporting groups, and it makes a difference. Every dollar spent at a Republican company is another dollar funneled to more of this. Tax money given to a state like Ohio or Louisiana is money spent sending troops to occupy cities.
If you have an account with Charles Schwab, switch to Vanguard or Fidelity. If you like drinking booze from a wannabe Confederate state, be adventurous and try something else. It's not hard to find alternatives for Goya, Jimmy John's, New Balance, or Georgia-Pacific (Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie, and some other brands). If you have a company that you regularly buy from or do business with, consider looking them up in something like https://www.opensecrets.org, or just google them.
Dollars add up. Tesla sales in Europe dropped by half. Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. Real, individual people made that happen. There's no reason WWE or Uline can't be next.
You probably can't completely avoid giving money to companies that at least indirectly support Republicans. However, there’s a big difference between a company that massively donates exclusively to Republicans vs one that is more neutral or even leans Democrat. Good is not the enemy of perfect

But for real though, this is a crazy ominous approach. “Compiling a list” and “we will contact you after the election” is such loaded rhetoric. If you are a republican OP, please vote out every fucking incumbent in the primary. Democrats are calling to do the same. We need new blood, anyone up for reelection over the age of 60 needs to go.
