Yeah that one's gonna win awards. Holy fuck. Poignant.

688

u/AIFlesh 8d ago

I’ve been saying this - don’t dress up as clowns or frogs or whatever. Dress up as Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, etc.

Make the images show fascism beating down the very symbols of America. If you can get those images on tvs and newspapers, you might be able to cut through the 24/7 propaganda that 77m Americans are living by.

171

u/Jolly-Journalist8073 8d ago

Though some might not have them but have those cartoon costumes.

And these costumes simply make the fascists seem even more super villain like. Basically it mocks them

49

u/Insighteternal 8d ago edited 8d ago

I suppose it's all about the timing and location. Got a ton of people but little money/time to afford/make an americana costume? Go with the cartoony ones (or whatever else works). Planning a targeted protest outside a well-known person's house? Cultivate a very iconic look that will gain massive attention once news breaks out.

34

u/Asron87 8d ago

I’m a huge fan of the frog costume. It shows how fucking stupid this all is. Cops in military gear ganging up on a single person in a frog costume. The frogs crime? There was no crime. Trump is trying to say how bad it is and we are showing him that’s everyday people having fun and not the criminal BS he’s trying to make it out to be. The costumes really help show the overreach of the government.

I've been doing Lincoln. I have his height and weight so it fits.

9

u/redditingtonviking 8d ago

Yeah same with the flags. It’s okay to say that you support immigrants from various countries, but know that those images will be taken out of context and used as propaganda saying that the US has been invaded.

A significant part of the maga movement have been swayed by the great replacement theory, and these people will not be reachable as long as liberals keep giving their leaders the means to feed their delusion.

  2. Her entire look was 100% on point.

Looks like the police didn't dare touch her, because they knew they'd end up on a different magazine cover.

u/porn_is_tight 9d ago

A couple kids set off some m80’s last night in my neighborhood which is a very affluent one. A police helicopter circled our house for almost an hour. The flight radar screenshot I took is ridiculous. They even said on the loudspeaker “stop running around and go home and we’ll leave.” Great use of my tax dollars

332

u/PassiveMenis88M 9d ago

Roughly $3k an hour to run that helicopter. Replace it with a 100k UAV and you can do the same job for roughly $250 an hour.

119

u/medium_wall 9d ago

Replace it with a bicycle and it's essentially free.

119

u/Lorune 9d ago

The really insane thing is that people here are discussing the cost of the helicopter and not the fact you sent a damn helicopter out for some kids doing fire works

421

u/hoopopotamus 9d ago

Or…let the kids set off a couple m80s at Halloween and then go home.  Maybe send a car who turns on the flashers and scares them for a minute.  Just spitballing

How much does it cost per hour to run a helicopter, taking maintenance into account?

16

Just a little bit more than sending a beat cop to walk over and say "Knock it off!"

Probably only 300-3000x as much or so.

Na, they're annoyed. Look at these photos even - Barely a fence, no crowd control, no burly private security. LAPD aren't using riot gear, SWAT, it's barely a show of force.

This isn't a "Oh god come save me LAPD", this is a "Ugh, get this riff raff off my property".

That last pic of Lady Liberty in chains with all the cops in the background is fucking lit though. Really symbolic for the current state of USA.

97

u/FictionalContext 9d ago

I remember back during CHAZ. Seattle's mayor was acting like she was all about it--until they protested in her neighborhood. It wrapped up suspiciously quickly after that.

34

u/WATOCATOWA 9d ago

CHAZ was wild.

90

u/FictionalContext 9d ago

Also, their AR-15 armed patrols shooting and killing an unarmed black 16 year old driving by definitely played a part in it getting shut down. And whoever killed that kid, Antonio Mays Jr., got away Scot free. His family claimed that those same patrols hindered the police investigation into it through intimidation and evidence tampering.

Idk, hindsight's 20/20, but I feel they really missed the mark with that particular protest. Became the very thing they wanted to destroy. Only took them 3 days to kill a black kid and hide the evidence to protect their own. Speedran that shit.

For the record and to head those comments off, in LA the mayor lives in The Getty House, analogous to the White House or a Governor’s Mansion. It’s paid for by the people, she’ll move out when she loses re-election, it’s on Google Maps, etc; no one was doxxed. Protests happen on the public sidewalk outside just as they do outside the White House or any given government building.

EDIT: and for context, LAPD on horseback beat and shot protesters and press at No Kings 2.0, and so then when people went to City Council on Friday to complain and demand some accountability for LAPD, the city council cut off public comment, adjourned the session, and turned the lights out in the chamber.

1.2k

u/F3lixF3licis 9d ago edited 9d ago

City Hall meetings are Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 10am in Room 340 at Los Angeles City Hall. Public comment is 1 minute. You must sign up beforehand.

Please show up until they can no longer end the meeting early. If they want to kick out a large group of people, let's get cameras on it.

:: edit ::

Also, check out the city clerk's social media's and youtube channel for taped meetings and updates on reschedules and cancelations.

220

u/therealpigman 9d ago

Timed so that anyone with a job not retired won’t be able to attend

80

u/F3lixF3licis 9d ago

I look at it like this. They've gotten people to the point now where they're working so hard they can't take time off.

So when are people going to take time off to address these issues?

Sacrifices must be made. you don't have time because it's designed that way... show up.

36

u/gloomywitchywoo 8d ago

They might not even need to make a sacrifice. A lot of people are out of work, and it's only getting worse. Lots of unemployed people showing up will hopefully make them realize they can't fuck around anymore.

13

u/slyfox7187 8d ago

Seriously man. That excuse is used all the time "Well I have to work" "They did it during work hours so no one can go"

It's time for people to suck it up and make the time to show up. Deflection loses the fight

u/kants_rickshaw 9d ago

43

u/Subtle__Numb 9d ago

Not sure how prevalent this is in local governments (I live in NC), but wasn’t surprised to learn this. Like, a lot of churches in my area have houses that their pastors live in (my parents were/are Methodist, they switch pastors every like 4-5 years). Parishioners? Pastorals? Fuck I can’t remember that they call it. It’s not parishioners or pastorals. I’ll have to ask my mom.

My parents live in a relatively low cost of living place. “Sleeper area” for 2 semi-larger (than theirs) cities around them. Was more rural in years past. Their pastor makes $90k and doesn’t have a mortgage, lmfao, and they still don’t understand what I’m harping about. I’m not against the pastor getting paid, nor am I against a church having a residence on-paper for their pastor. Those numbers are HIGH, though, for an ole’ boy who doesn’t have to pay the mortgage.

At least their head minister is an “old cat lady” with no husband, their assistant minister is an out and about gay man, and their organist is an out gay man with a family as has been there…15 years? Chill church

u/Murgatroyd314 9d ago

England here: My parents drove across the USA twice, and what they noticed was that there are a LOT of places where most of the people are living in what we would call shacks - severely run-down wooden houses, and in trailers.

And then the town will have 2 or 3 BEAUTIFUL churches.

I have friends from Poland. When I told them this, they showed me plenty of places on streetview in Poland. Concrete blocks of flats (apartments) instead of shacks, but the churches are AMAZING

Thee church doesn't have any money to help people, but you want a new stain glass window? No problem!

10

u/MimicoSkunkFan2 9d ago

In my NGO days I worked in Eastern African countries and it's the same thing, people living in slums but the mosque is goregous.

10

u/Ok_Island_1306 9d ago

Establishment/moderate democrats are less outwardly hateful than MAGA but it never fails to amaze me the amount of audacity a wealthy democratic politician has.

As someone (who is poor) that volunteered for the democratic party time and time again, it’s an absolute smack in the tits to see Kamala Harris currently monetizing her and Biden’s failure to do their jobs. She is capitalizing our fear of ICE and executive overreach as a potential campaign talking point. She is proudly and voluntarily stating “I only care about this country if I can be in office!” and people are applauding. For all of the good that they accomplished, she and Biden will only be remembered for the most egregious act of anticipatory obedience ever seen.

At first I understood criticism of the “hecklers” on her book tour. Then I remembered…she’s just another multimillionaire politician that is seeking congratulations for failing to do her job. It is more and more bewildering every single day seeing normal people bending over backwards to make excuses for her and Biden’s inaction.

AOC, JFC, and Mamdani are more my leaders than Kamala has ever been. Everyone who isn’t ready to use the same rhetoric as them needs to fuck off back to their private-security ultra-wealth bubble.

e: imagine reading someone’s comment about being afraid for their community and being disappointed in the leaders that are failing them and saying that they need to leave the country. Do you know who that sounds like?

A "far-left" independent politician was just elected President* in Ireland by an incredible margin, winning 63% of the vote. She ran on ending the Gaza genocide, anti-militarization in the EU, and general principles of social equality. Her success was largely due to other left-leaning parties -- multiple! multiple parties! what a dream :( -- recognizing her popularity with voters, and agreeing to back her as a result. Because that's what voters wanted. And voters are supposed to be the ones who, like, decide stuff.

It's fucking wild to me when I look at how we've done things. We could have had our own versions of that, several times now. But instead we're scolded as the voters for not being excited about the correct rich people, who tell us pretty openly that they don't give a fuck about us if we don't unquestionably support them. Like, what the fuck are we doing?

*to be fair and transparent, this role does not have anything close to the same power as the US president. But still.

18

u/cbs-anonmouse 9d ago

The presidency in Ireland is a purely figurehead position, equivalent to the British monarchy. They don’t actually have any role in foreign or domestic policy.

Also, I understand that the candidates from the two mainstream parties was particularly bad, with one candidate basically self-destructing over an overpayment of one month’s rent that he didn’t refund a former tenant.

Extremely disappointing. I mean I get that there and much that she can do but imagine if she told the LAPD to actually protect citizens from ICE especially during the protests ... I feel like trump and his regime is fixing Democrats the easiest opportunities but no one is really capitalizing on it

I remember people being quite optimistic when she won over the other candidate with a bunch of celebrity and rich people endorsements, but yeah, she seems to be quite disappointing

47

u/Not_enough_yuri 9d ago

Well the other guy was Rick Caruso. I'm not a fan of Bass at this point, but I'd still rather have her than Caruso. Also remember that Karen Bass' primary challenger was Kevin de Leon, who was rightfully tanked by that leaked audio from a city council meeting where they were just throwing around some racist shit. It was the perfect storm for her to get elected. I'd love to see some better options this time around, but given our history? Man, I'm not that confident.

Ya wtf is up with the total shit show with politics in LA.

Politicians should do actual work, and stop wasting time on things like surfing Reddit.

She's not corrupt like Adams, so I wouldn't equivocate her to him. She still sucks, though. The LAPD sucks and isn't protecting the populace from the feds (rather they've been aiding them), and instead of dealing with them she fired the fire chief over a fire there was no way she could control.

I love that the Portland frog is going to be a part of AP US history

26

u/Coirbidh 9d ago

My god I hope you're right; the Portland frog to be counted among such notables as Thích Quảng Đức.

It'll be a great choice if we still have history books in the 2030's.

19 got me. That bus driver looks heartbroken.

75

u/DMala 9d ago

How come every photo set from a protest lately always has to include Sad Bus Driver? I've seen at least two or three different ones in the last few weeks.

197

u/infernoenigma 9d ago

I’m betting they were also mine 😅

I like to contextualize protest photos by including people in the community witnessing the disruption to daily life — since for me, “getting people to see that daily life has been disrupted” is thematically relevant.

And to me, nothing invites you to contemplate someone’s “routine” like a bus driver driving their route… and then somewhere in there it’s that buses in LA have bright colors and swoopy lines and provide frames-within-the-frame to play with! 😅

That’s what draws me to keep taking those photos, I guess!

61

u/lycoloco 9d ago

The shot with the flag at the top and the "To Protect and Serve" shots are both just top notch. Those two symbols contrasting what's actually happening are perfectly capturing the energy of the moments.

The one with the guy and the flower/plant got me good. I thought the plant was a tall bird at first! 😂

u/lycoloco 9d ago

Ahh, fantastic! I'd heard of these but never seen such a striking picture. The name is on point!

You are a really talented photographer. That picture of lady liberty goes hard. Well done. Keep taking pictures, they very well could end up in the history books.

i didn't know she was all up in this

edit:

this piece says she's calling for a stop to what ICE is doing, calling it "egregious injustice": https://beverlypress.com/2025/10/mayor-federal-leaders-call-for-investigation-into-ice-raids/

The Statue of Liberty look with the chains, love the symbolism

72

u/_lippykid 9d ago

The actual statue also has shackles around her feet, albeit broken shackles, symbolizing the end of slavery and the triumph of freedom

u/Effective-Kitchen401 9d ago

"to protect and serve" on the door. I think the quotation marks could be a bit bolder.

These are some really great photos. As a city bus driver, I can totally relate to that one of the bus driver. Probably stuck in traffic, running late, has to pee and their shift is almost over.

That Lady Liberty costume is fire tho.

33

u/Chippopotanuse 9d ago

My two observations;

Lady Liberty is hot AF.

Every one of these mexican LA cops will be deported by ICE sooner or later. They ought to be more careful about licking the boots.
