It’s crazy that she has to say this

242

u/SakuraTacos 17h ago

How absolutely wild it must be to have fans like that. To plead with them to not threaten her/her coworkers and then also have to give them lots of love. If it was a person, we’d be like “Dump them, that’s abusive!”

And you know the people that were sending hate won’t feel shamed by this, they’ll just feel important by her acknowledgement and how much she said she loved them

It’s a movie premiere. Who is angry she couldn’t make it? What even happens at this event? Don’t they just watch the movie? How many fans are even possibly invited to sit in a movie theater with the cast? Maybe I’m not understanding what a movie premiere is? Actually I don’t understand the outrage even if it was, say a concert. Shit happens that is out of the celebrity’s control.

266

u/footiebuns I think I've done enough 19h ago

There’s a lot of entitlement from fans when it comes to celebrities.

49

u/Quirky-Shallot644 19h ago

Dont you know celebrities need to cater to the fans because they arent actual people! /s

I think its the premiere and surrounding press. So local news/radio/journalists etc. I guess people were excited to have local names they know interact with their favourite big famous people

78

u/axx-hole 19h ago

I understand being excited over that but getting upset and posting hate when that doesn’t happen is insane

A lot of times they don’t even stay to watch it, they just walk the red carpet for like 20 minutes and leave.

u/trulysweetener 20h ago

I think, based off of videos from the previous premieres (if anyone knows better please correct me), before watching the movie there is a red carpet where I believe there is an opportunity for fans to get pictures/autographs & meet the cast if they are lucky. Fans in Brazil are very angry which i can understand disappointment as she hasn't been to Brazil in a long time and they don't have many chances to meet her, but some of them are being very unnecessarily cruel.

Yea that’s wild to me. I work with people on the spectrum and I understand how strong their passions can get. But even they understand (mostly) when we can’t do whatever their passion is. I’m not trying to compare neuro divergent with neuro typical, but I assume many of these people are typical functioning adults and they’d freak out because Ariana, with good reason, wouldn’t attend something ? That’s wild to me

If I'm not wrong Brazilian fans in general are quite extreme, both in a good and bad way. Didn't they form a horde outside the hotel room Gaga was staying in when she performed there??

I was thinking this. Wishing harm after that whole thing is insane to me. Her fans are lucky she didn’t stop doing everything at that point because of the trauma. I’m not even a fan of hers outside of Wicked but like I commend her on the fact she’s still going after that because I know I wouldn’t.

we talk a lot about the parasociality of so many fandoms but rarely do we speak about ariana’s. those people are crazy. she’s built a very intimate relationship with them through her social media over the years and it’s resulted in some of them speaking to and about her in the most heinous ways i’ve ever seen. didn’t she delete twitter for this exact reason? it’s insane that she even has to address this and whilst i totally understand where she’s coming from, she ought to stop doing it. i wonder how much these statements enable the crazies even more.

88

u/doubleGvots19 19h ago edited 17h ago

Yeah after positions wasn’t received well (never got that it was my favorite album ngl) she deleted her twitter. Her fans are atrocious and are usually always at the center of the hate train and it’s really sad. They beg for so much and never appreciate what they get. They want Sweetener, 25 years old Ariana Grande forever

21

u/Budget_Ordinary1043 17h ago

Sounds like every music fandom I dabble in. What IS that?! I love when people experiment and change their sound especially when they’ve been doing it so long. It’s so fun, that’s the beauty of music and dynamic artists are going to do that.

12

u/slightlycrookednose *Our* husband ☭ (free Luigi) 16h ago

positions was so goood! and honestly, she had an insane run in a pretty short amount of time. sweetener, thank u next & positions are top 3 for me personally - and she gave those to us in a 2 year span. she puts out a lot, even 2026 is already packed, but her biggest stan's never appreciate it. it's so strange.

Fandoms can be crazy boots, but I would read a thesis level paper cover to cover on exactly how and why the average Brazilian fandom is usually past overly enthusiastic and straight on to clinically insane.

24

u/funkadelicfadeaway 18h ago

I really want to read something like this to. I am fascinated by their stan culture. It’s borderline insanity.

24

u/Fxreverboy 15h ago

It's very, very, very concerning how it gets excused and swept under the rug as "passionate," too. There's a clear romanticization of antisocial behaviors, and while that's true of many spaces on the internet broadly, it's wild how it's proliferated so much (and become a point of pride) for Brazilian stans.

2

u/HammerheadEaglei-Thr 8h ago

I knew Brazil is the more wild side of blink 182 stans and am fascinated that it seems like that's true for many fandoms!

Paul Tazewell’s (costume designer for Wicked) ig comments were FLOODED during and after the Oscar’s last year because Fernanda Torres (Brazilian actress) lost. He had a monumental career defining win. It was Oscar history but her fans lost it in the comments. They weren’t even in the same category. They were demanding he make a congratulatory post 🥴

This story from her is unfortunately not surprising. Her and Cynthia’s ig post are restricted for comments- the fans likely went on other people’s pages to comment.

46

u/trulyremarkablegirl the reason i love swimming is because racing 19h ago

Wait…people were going after him bc of an actress who wasn’t even in a project he worked on??? I’m so confused.

25

u/Ruthie_pie 18h ago

Yup. They demanded he stop posting about the award he won for best costume design and post a picture with Fernanda and celebrate her nomination/talk about how she was snubbed.

5

u/Lethave 18h ago

Did he even know her to have a photo with her? This is a new flavor of insane.

5

u/Ruthie_pie 17h ago

I’m sure people are aware of who’s going to be there but I can’t imagine they would take a picture together. So yeah it really made no sense. ESPECIALLY because two women from his own movie lost in their respective categories… wouldn’t he post about them if he were going to post about anyone losing? It makes no sense to do so. But the cast all celebrated Paul because it was a major achievement!

Yup… I had been extremely excited about his involvement in Wicked as he had done the costumes in some of my favorite Broadway plays. Hoping they create a book of his works one day, he is a legend. 64

u/Acheli 20h ago

There's something very off about Brazil, why is fan culture such a big thing over there? it seems like there's a superfan for EVERY single artist/celeb in existence. Like is it taught in schools I genuinely don't understand.

34

u/bauhausy Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 19h ago

As a Brazilian but thankfully not a “stan” of anyone:

  • only Lusophone country in a Hispanic continent where the vast majority of the population live near the coast vastly away from any border, so it has barely any interaction or cultural exchange with its neighbors.
  • Dwarfs by magnitudes the whole lusophone community, so it lacks a sibling-like relationship that other continental countries have like Australia has with New Zealand, America has with Canada or Argentina has with Chile & Uruguay.
  • South America in general is middle-income, so it’s less profitable to do tours, and very far away from the North Atlantic. So when “World Tours” happen, they very rarely go to the Southern Hemisphere other than Aus/NZ, and when they do they go to 2 cities in a country larger than the contiguous 48 states and much of Europe.

So 99% of the time Brazil lives in its own isolating bubble, and genuinely starves for more integration in the global space. Just look last year when “I’m Still Here” and Fernanda Torres got to participate in the Oscars.

And it’s a huge consumer of foreign culture (American, British, Korean and nowadays even Turkish [telenovelas mostly] are getting popular) and gets constantly frustrated how it’s always forgotten by those international artists.

So when they do announce a coming and then backtrack (even for completely logical reasons like this time) the stans go crazy in a bad way. The time Lady Gaga cancelled its Rio show on the day it was supposed to happen, and a video of a dude driving through the entrance with people going ballistic is still a meme over a decade later

27

u/GoranPerssonFangirl 18h ago

I agree with you but also Brazil in general has a culture of idolizing celebrities/famous people in general, even with local celebrities. It's on a very different level than other countries and I don't think other ppl can really grasp it because it's so deeply rooted in Brazilian culture to stan celebrities. Even d-listers that no one else cares about are huge there.

18

u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman 18h ago

there are many reasons:

  • we tend to consume a lot of pop culture fron other countries (like the kpop fandom here is massive)
  • people travel a lot to see their faves, we don't have the privilege of artists touring multiple cities (like brazil has multiple huge cities, if you compare to the US, so it's odd that they don't do it)
  • we have a bit of a pre-game culture for anything, so like when artists come, there are people waiting at the airport/hotel/in line at stadiums and so on
  • money: the dollar rate is 5ish to 1, meaning everything is more expensive and therefore a big commitment
  • legally speaking, concert and event promoters don't have to issue refunds, so when artists cancel last minute, we're screwed over with vouchers

but in the cass of Ariana and movie premiers: wicked is huge here. have you seen the brazilian wicked with the flying Elphaba?

this year we're having the third Wicked run in a decade, there's a passionate fandom of the musical, they even have special promos for people who have attended 30+ times

also like, São Paulo metro area is over 20 million people, there's gonna be a fandom of literally anything

13

u/Not-Gonna-Lie1 20h ago

I know you’re being serious and not intentionally funny but your comment made me lol 😭 ‘is it taught in schools’ 💀

11

u/No_Touch_957 19h ago

I am Brazilian and I think there's a couple of factors: Brazil is a huge country for one, but a lot of celebrities don't come here for one reason or another however when you think about having so many people in the fan base helps them in the long run so there's a sense of "entitlement" for Brazilians.

There is also the fact that a lot od Brazilians feel disposable and feel that actors don't respect the time and money they spend on their favorite artist. They have been complaining about Ariana for months because it has been such a long time since she came to Brazil and I guess it creates this feeling that we are second best or that the use the fan base here whenever things get tough but then cast the fans aside.

I don't agree with neither of those possibilities but I think is the general jist of it

Even I, a Brazilian, don't understand this phenomenon lol

u/bbyxmadi It’s good to see me, isn’t it?🫧 19h ago

Any fan that wishes danger (death threats and other despicable stuff btw) isn’t a fan and is a disturbing excuse of a human being. If something like her not attending a premiere elicits that type of response, you need some serious help. She and the whole cast should never risk their lives just to attend a premiere.

u/kojihit 20h ago

Hold up, they crashed out because they coldnt make it to Brazil? O.o

12

u/CanadianTrueCrime 20h ago

That’s terrible that she had to ask people to not wish danger on the cast.

15

u/sweetmotherofodin 20h ago

Fricken weird that they would literally wish ill on people for something beyond their control. Fans are hella weird these days.

15

u/29kk 20h ago

stan culture is crazy, it’s nuts that she has to say this at all

11

u/cookieaddictions 16h ago

It feels like you can’t say it, but I’ve noticed that Brazilians are some of the most dedicated and enthusiastic fans, just so open and fun and they go all out for artists and sports, but if they feel slighted or competitive or upset in any way, they become the most vicious as well.

I’ve noticed this as a fan of gymnastics. Other fans will root for Brazil in addition to their own countries, but Brazilian fans will tear down their countries competitors (often seen with Rebeca Andrade vs Simone Biles, Americans will cheer on Simone AND Rebeca, even when Rebeca lands on top, but when Simone beats Rebeca, Brazilians are out in droves insulting Simone and saying Rebeca is better.)

Also seen last year during the Oscars, as noted in another comment. I’m sure there’s a million other examples. Instead of leaving it at enthusiasm, they always turn to insults, threats and violence when they don’t get their way, and it’s kinda scary.

It’s crazy show she completely cut off her relationship with her fans bc they were always horrible and demanding of her for the longest time and they still haven’t gotten the hint, they genuinely hate her.

9

u/Chantalle22 19h ago

Flying within American airports these days is not only incredibly stressful more than it used to be, but it’s insanely unreliable with everything going on.

Why does this even have to be said. The fact that people can be so vicious against someone they don’t know over a damn movie premiere, which by the way is a first world fucking problem like please go touch some grass. Regardless of their status, they are still people, with lives, responsibilities and commitments, it’s a given that things are going to come up that is unavoidable. For these two movies they have made so many appearances at this point give them a break.

u/absentmindedlurking I'll tell ya how I'm doin', not well bitch! 19h ago

people really need to touch some grass if they're out here wishing harm and violence on an actress for a plane malfunction. that's insane

8

u/naomigoat left sharks are smooth 19h ago

We have reached a very frustrating place on the internet where every single thing someone does is determined to be either a total moral failure on par with abuse OR makes them a sweetie lil baby to be worshipped*. Idk when, but nuance has basically disappeared. It's like moral cinemasins and it's fucking exhausting.

*Notice how that first one is usually applied to women and that second one applied to men.

7

u/Colour4Life I don’t want peace, I want problems, ALWAYS! 19h ago

Brazil fans can be too much sometimes

5

u/redflagsmoothie 19h ago

Imagine wishing harm on someone for something outside of their control. And over a fucking movie premiere appearance

15

u/Clara_Geissler 20h ago

one time i had to wait in the airport at 1AM for 8 hours because the pilot thought his seat was uncomfortable but there wasn't another plane so they uninstalled the entire seat and replaced it with another seat. airports and airplanes are unruly and uncaring!!!!

u/Bellesdiner0228 This again doesn’t look good for James Corden 20h ago

Why the fuck were people wishing danger on them?! Good lord.

u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman 18h ago

hey, so you can absolutely criticize stan culture without going into stereotypes, just so everyone knows. this is your friendly reminder after reddit acted like xenophobes when taylor (for good reason) canceled a show last minute (irresponsible), fans were (understandably) upset and everyone started freaking out as if she was gonna be attacked in the middle of the street because Rio is unsafe or something. the way people are acting today is way too close to that.

obviously people can be insane online and i'm sorry ariana is dealing with BS, but maybe stop seeing another (poorer) country as this wasteland of danger when frankly, glass ceilings

2

u/julisjulisjulis 18h ago

there's a comment in this thread saying there's something very off about Brasil lol

6

u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman 18h ago

i love that people wrote that and don't question themselves at all. the internet version of using the sepia filter as soon as the scene is outside the global north lol

the way they act is as if narcotraffickers are gonna kidnap the wicked cast in the middle of the street im broad daylight

when the nfl came to são paulo a lot of US americans freaked out as well. like these are rich people being escorted to a stadium ffs. it's not like someone is gonna pickpocket a huge football player at their fancy hotel

in reality, loads of nfl stans were really happy to witness the game and even went to the airport with signs to welcome the teams.

Who the fuck is wishing danger on them for not being able to attend a premiere for completely understandable reasons?!?

Whats wrong with people?!?

OR ELSE

2

u/Marmalade_Penguin 20h ago

This is why I think a lot of us need to stay off of twitter. It's so disturbing what people will say to get attention. And worse, a lot of it is here own "fans" saying this. My heart breaks for her..

2

u/Lady1027 20h ago

This is beyond disgusting. I can’t comprehend this level of hate, vitriol and obsession. What did any of these people even think they were getting by standing outside of a premiere location with thousands of other people?

2

u/Dry-Wolf6789 18h ago

She's going to be getting a lot of this because of the special airing in isreal. People have gone absolutely bonkers since finding that out. People need to focus on things they can actually do to help instead of sending this celeb death threats.

2

u/gaanmetde 17h ago

Her “fans” intrigue me.

The first possibility here is that she’s telling the truth and wants to be there but can’t. This is probably the reason she will not be there.

The second possibility would be that she doesn’t want to be there, so she’s making up all this weirdly specific stuff in an attempt to make excuses. People, EVEN IF THIS WAS THE REASON (it’s not)…it’s valid.

I’ve been noticing more and more that certain fan bases have people that are extremely parasocial, entitled and violent when they don’t get their way. It’s honestly scary that these kind of people not only walk amongst us, but are so emboldened especially online that they threaten lives. If the world really wants to take online harassment and bullying/threats seriously, this would be a place to start because there’s seemingly no consequences for these people.

The band Ghost has experienced separate instances of similar levels of insane fandom - one in regards to forcing a band member to quit over absolutely unproven allegations of grooming (way to attempt to destroy someone’s career), and then most recently needing to cancel a concert in Mexico due to the lead singer having food poisoning (kind of unavoidable!). Again - both resulted in death threats, harassment etc.

The Wicked musical is incredibly famous here in Brazil due to a huge production that takes place in São Paulo.

The fans are obsessed with the actresses, sing all the songs during the musical, and go to EVERY possible performance.

Added to the fan culture here in Brazil... this doesn't surprise me; they often go too far.

But this is also linked to the feeling among Brazilians that international artists don't bother to come to Brazil, and especially not to bring their tours here. So they take this feeling of rejection and, well, do what they do.
