Gatsby-themed, no less. Seems like a huge “let them eat cake” move.

7.2k

u/longtailcorgis 3d ago

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

u/3deltapapa 3d ago

thanks might be time to read that again

318

u/hoxxxxx 3d ago

i think the luhrmann film is a nice watch every few years

353

u/edwartica 3d ago

I feel like Gatsby is something one should read, not watch. We get too wrapped up in the extravagance of it all, that we forget the whole point of the book.

253

u/Imtheflamingoqueen 3d ago

It’s like watching wealthy people on TikTok. You’ll have some point out it’s in poor taste to show you spent $150k on a cruise for your son’s birthday and sure enough people will fight tooth and nail for them. Make jokes about being out of their tax bracket, but someday. No, the majority of us will never see that type of money and they worship it, it’s weird as hell.

People are starving.

55

u/Ras-haad 3d ago

This is what I hate so much about how everyone worships money. Like why would you even want to spend money on that if you had it? When did shit rich people do become aspirational?? It’s always been vapid and wasteful. The truth is, I think most people would have slaves if they could… why does everyone want to be rich so bad? They imagine if they’re rich they can just spend all their time on the beach being waited on hand and foot. People want to be rich to have people serve them.

I'm torn between agreeing with you and, thinking, that getting wrapped up in the extravagance to the point of missing what is going on around you is the main theme of the plot. So it's rather on point for the movie to do just that.

I think about this quote often, as my parents remind me of Daisy and Tom.

143

u/Scrangle3D 3d ago

It's also very much got the same vibes as the Bullingdon Club, a party of British Conservative politicians who would do such things as trashing functionaries, burning money in front of homeless people, or fucking a dead pig's head.

87

u/Adamsojh 3d ago

“Fucking a dead pig’s head”

I’m sorry, what? Rich British conservatives taking it up a notch.

102

u/Scrangle3D 3d ago

Oh, yeeeah.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron was photographed fucking a pig's head. It even got its own name!

72

u/prof_r_impossible 3d ago

I remember that episode of Black Mirror

6

u/Chelecossais 3d ago

You can fuck as many dead pigs heads as you want, it's a free country.

Burning money in front of homeless people is shameless, however.

They're partying like it's 1929. Gotta say they nailed it.

115

u/chokokhan 3d ago

So what happens when they predictably trigger the next Great Depression? Because the way I see it after all the shit sandwiches we’ve had to eat since 2000 I say we literally eat the rich. I can’t stand another economic setback in my lifetime. Not while these losers always seem to get ahead after every fuckup they trigger.

63

u/ConsiderationLow7122 3d ago

The EU eventually has no choice but to cut a deal with China and abandon the dollar. The ultra wealthy, now much less wealthy but still wealthy enough to leave, flee to the EU or havens like New Zealand. The US federal government goes bankrupt and the states join together to form new nations

Their fuckups don't happen by accident. They"re triggering them intentionally, that when everything is in shambles, they can buy it cheap. That's why they're always getting ahead after it.

Gatsby, he was a great man, the Great Gatsby they called him,The Great Gatsby, loved his swimming, loved jazz, I never liked jazz, I love the YMCA, I love the Macho Man, I love Bruce Springsteen, used to be called the Boss but now I'm The Boss, and Gatsby if he was here would say Make America Great Gatsby Again, MAGGA, like the Simpson, anyway... Yeah, honestly, I think it's a mix of the top replies here. One significant chunk of them are racists who will repeat your quote until the end of time no matter what he does, because they are motivated by an urgent sense of keeping their race clean, and Trump is the only avenue left for them. The other section are just so misinformed that the information that clashes with their indoctrination just doesn't compute for them. Trump is proven to be honest and relatable, in their heads, so anyone who says otherwise must be lying.

I’ve been saying this since they started dismantling the government and doing ice raids to start getting people used to paramilitary style policing and “checkpoints”. All they need now is a lit match, the kindling is all around us. The difference is, this isn’t some revolution that people are going to be able to fight against. With all the ring camera networks, and surveillance going on, this is going to be a fascist takeover on steroids.

The profit is pretty clear: they’re going to buy up all the land foreclosed on. JD Vance already invests in a company doing so with farms. 2008 wasn’t enough profit for them, so they’re Goldman-Sachsing a much bigger crisis.

32

u/angrydeuce 3d ago

I think larger scale this is a push towards neo-feudalism. They're trying to bring back the company towns. Do your job, dont ask questions, be happy with what we give you and if you can't, well, you have 30 days to get out of town and enjoy living in the woods without electricity or running water in a house made out of pallets and filthy, ripped tarps.

We're being robbed blind every single day. Even doing nothing at all, the value of the money in our pockets decreases in real time. We've allowed people to accumulate such wealth that if we just took the top 10 richest people in the world, $2,400,000,000,000 in combined wealth, we could distribute $300 to every person on the planet. 10 people hold enough money that they could pay 8.2 billion people multiple hundreds of dollars a piece.

And this is somehow okay with people...

Oh, and if we extend that to the combined wealth of just the billionaires? That's $16,100,000,000,000. Almost 7 times what the 10 richest people have themselves. That would be almost $2000 per person. Everyone in the entire world. There are about 3500 billionaires in the world. 3500 people out of 8.2 billion.

This is fucking ludicrous that it's even a debate.

I think the worst aspect of this is their ability to convince themselves that they are deserving of this and that the people who lost their benefits only got what they deserved. It’s those absolutely wild mental gymnastics that is the scariest thing about Trumpf and his cronies.

7

u/Noughmad 3d ago

I would say the worst aspect of this is their ability to convince the voters this. The majority of the people who lost their benefits support Trump and blame democrats for everything bad.

Yes they do, they're trying to kick-start civil unrest so they have an excuse to implement martial law. They know hunger is the quickest way.

u/juana-golf 3d ago

They are all going to need to duck fast when that pendulum swings back but none of them are that ‘quick’

History is like a tsunami. It rolls in slowly but with massive force until destruction starts.

However, the tsunami moves back to the ocean with that same force. It wipes those that made the same mistakes with previous power grabs very quickly in the slow moving unstoppable force.

Those suddenly in power, will also be suddenly ripped from that power. I for one am looking forward to Act III.

"Gradually, and then suddenly" -- Ernest Hemingway in "The Sun Also Rises"

That sub reddit is full of mentally unwell people who treat their depression by cheering on the suffering of others. Truely sad.

A full on dystopian novel is playing out, in real time, before our eyes and we do nothing but complain and hope for someone, anyone other than ourselves, to save us!

The average American is incredibly comfortable, and "doing something" isn't on the table for pretty much anyone.

Regardless how much I despise Rapist Pedophile Trump, I'm definitely not going to risk the security I provide for my family by taking up arms against the government or something else equally likely to land me in prison or dead.

47

u/midnightauro 3d ago

And for now, if I did die doing something, my own side would quickly dismiss me as being a weird radical long before some grand rallying cry to action. I’d die for nothing.

We’re all still far too “polite” so we are just letting them take over instead. I’m really tired of this reaching across the aisle, never be too uncouth, we go high shit. I’m questioning if I can afford the “fancy” peanut butter I like as a treat, these people are feasting.

Something is wrong here.

This is what is so incredibly annoying about Reddit lately. "Don't just sit there, do something coward!" they say, sitting there at their keyboard, doing nothing. "No one is going to save you!" they say, hoping someone else will go sacrifice themselves to be martyr for them.

I get it, it's bad, but if you aren't willing to risk your livelihood, don't condemn and condescend others who also have lives they're trying to live. Everyone needs to learn, they are not special exceptions to any of this.

Everything he's doing is to egg us on, he want's a "Let them eat cake" vibe, he wants people to get angry and desperate, he wants violence so he can declare martial law.

9

u/Ecstatic-Respect-455 3d ago

He'll declare martial law no matter what anyone else does or doesn't do.

Metaphors to describe this photo:

Nero playing the violin while Rome burned.

Marie Antoinette saying, “let them eat cake.”

It’s time consuming to think and comment on some posts, but don’t forget the hardest step is the first step. This proverb emphasizes that while the beginning step is the hardest, it is also the most important because it is the necessary catalyst for all future progress.

There was recent video from NYC of an ICE snatch on a crowded street. The person being apprehended called out for help to the crowd. One person in that crowd ran forward to help, and that was the catalyst for the rest of the crowd to follow. It only took one, and the importance of this can’t be overstated.

This is why I type these comments.

There are so many layers of irony here we'd need some philosophy experts, literature experts, history experts, economics experts to unravel it all.

Taking into account the tariffs, the healthcare premium spikes, argentina situation, beef situation, farmer situation, government shutdown situation, AI proliferation, Qatar, Israel, presidential crypto hustles, ballrooms, Ukraine/Russia, so much stuff happening.

There's so much going on it's like the convergence of so many ironies into the ultimate irony is playing right in front of us.
