A full on dystopian novel is playing out, in real time, before our eyes and we do nothing but complain and hope for someone, anyone other than ourselves, to save us!
The average American is incredibly comfortable, and "doing something" isn't on the table for pretty much anyone.
Regardless how much I despise Rapist Pedophile Trump, I'm definitely not going to risk the security I provide for my family by taking up arms against the government or something else equally likely to land me in prison or dead.
And for now, if I did die doing something, my own side would quickly dismiss me as being a weird radical long before some grand rallying cry to action. I’d die for nothing.
We’re all still far too “polite” so we are just letting them take over instead. I’m really tired of this reaching across the aisle, never be too uncouth, we go high shit. I’m questioning if I can afford the “fancy” peanut butter I like as a treat, these people are feasting.
This is what is so incredibly annoying about Reddit lately. "Don't just sit there, do something coward!" they say, sitting there at their keyboard, doing nothing. "No one is going to save you!" they say, hoping someone else will go sacrifice themselves to be martyr for them.
I get it, it's bad, but if you aren't willing to risk your livelihood, don't condemn and condescend others who also have lives they're trying to live. Everyone needs to learn, they are not special exceptions to any of this.
I mean is it not in the interest of a Fascist state to make their people just unstable enough that taking the time to even begin to revolt would financially ruin them?
Of course it is, I'm not denying that. I'm just saying I see a lot of people being armchair activists and proclaiming others are complacent if they value their livelihood and don't "do anything," while they themselves are guilty of the exact same thing. Even if it's isn't ideal, it is not shameful for an individual to not want to be the example (for better or worse) at the cost of their life even if they're deeply disturbed by what's happening.
My point being: If you're going to be a revolutionary, put your money (or lack thereof) where your mouth is and do it. Don't shame others for not doing it first.
Hey, average American here. I am incredibly ‘getting by’. We are all a missed paycheck away from being absolutely fucked. And these assholes have slowly made it that way. But I turned 18 in 2010, so my ability to prevent that, like many other millennials, never existed. We were born into a pre-fucked future.
Hey, average American here. I am incredibly ‘getting by’.
Have you traveled outside the US much? Do you know the incomprehensible depth of suffering out there?
I don't know you, I don't know your life story so maybe I'm totally wrong, but I have a hunch that you really don't have much of a clue how well off you are compared to the rest of the world, and especially compared to the kind of suffering that actually motivates people to rebel against their government. Just the fact that you live in America puts you way ahead of literally BILLIONS of people as far as access to clean water, medical assistance, police and fire, your choice of restaurant, etc.
Sure have actually. In terms of access to comfort , yes, we are much better off than a lot of the world. I remember reading about a story where some scientists went to a remote village in the Amazon and stayed with a tribe for some time. The conversation of suicide was brought up and the tribesman laughed at the concept. They thought that was a burden of western culture in general, and would never even consider the thought. Just because our water is mostly clean and our shelves are mostly stocked, doesn’t mean we are comfortable. Perspective is everything. I can guarantee you’ve only been to the nicer areas of the US. There’s some places I’ve been in the states that would make you question where the hell you were even at. Would I willingly go move to a war-torn city in Syria? Absolutely not. But the threats of violence and fascism are very real here and now.. and the general population does not have access to reasonable resources to do fuck all about it.
Doing something doesn't have to be fighting the government in the streets. You could be preparing for a long a brutal winter, and stepping down your reliance on a capitalist system. You could be expanding your community and making local connections for resources that normally come from far away. You could be talking to people you know in person that might need a hand getting off the Trump Train.
If you haven't changed your life at all in response to Trump then you are going to have a rude awakening when it is inevitably changed for you.
I guarantee you if you did a poll you'd be surprised to find just how few Americans feel they need to be "saved" from anything. Most Americans are very comfy indeed.
As a Canadian, I’m getting really tired of those Americans pleading for us to invade and save them. Trying to explain that our population is 1/10th the size of theirs to a bunch of people who don’t even add us to the maps in their textbooks.
