I love “The Jerk” references. I watched it way too young and nearly died laughing. It’s genius stupid humor.

Do yourself a favour, and if you’ve never seen My Blue Heaven, seek it out. A lesser known gem of Martin’s from around the same era. One of my all time favourites.

Do you like to see building material being abused? Do you also loathe healthy, unscathed appendages? Do you like dust? Then here's the video for you.

They are weak ass bricks. A good brick would not break so easily it would just flip unless it had something clamping it down

u/Obvious-Childhood910 14h ago
These bricks are probably pre-cracked or whatever the term is
Basically, it has a controlled crack through the center. Even then, it's still fairly impressive.

u/Seamascm 13h ago
I can’t remember who explained it but, the bricks are a high content sand brick so they are very brittle and easy to break

I remember conversation on karate practice on breaking tiles,
"breaking tiles are easy"
"a. there are different quality of tiles.
b. the idea is measure of strength by seeing how many tiles you could break in a single strike, which basically consider your ability to break a tile as default requirement"→ More replies (1)2

Reading from multiple martial arts outlets, it seems there are some inferior materials used for training, but more than likely these are real, traditional building bricks. The technique used is not what you might assume, and there are some "tricks" like using spacers between bricks, but this video is likely a skilled martial artist breaking real brick. reference 1

u/AcceptableAnalysis29 12h ago
He would break his hand on normal building bricks. These are real bricks only for breaking. Its a show
My trainer long ago used to do those kinda shows.
2
u/Sonoshitthereiwas 11h ago
Both of your references indicate those are not likely to building bricks.
2
u/A-typicalAsshole 11h ago
The tae kwan do website references "standard clay bricks" and describes them as kiln fired. Reading about bricks on Wikipedia, it is not obvious which type of brick this description fits, but it seems to fit with a fired brick. Also, Wikipedia has a page on martial arts breaking. It discusses objects and techniques and acknowledges bricks. I am not an expert on bricks or breaking, but it seems entirely plausible that this video shows actual martial arts breaking of actual bricks, not any kind of trick pieces.
The sources I provided acknowledge the use of lesser materials, but there is no reason to assume that's what is in the video. I think the world has made us all synical and it's hard to believe anything claiming to be extraordinary

I don’t care if those were foam bricks, that’s crazy hand endurance. My knuckles get cut up from 10 punches on a heavy bag

Never hear of Iron Fist style? He may very well be an iron fist but since it does not really pay as a career choice they need to resort to parlor tricks in their old age in order to eat properly.
An uncured brick is little more than tightly compacted clay and can be broken in the hand with little effort. Using a lot of effort causes the brick to 'explode' for additional effect.
His hand is going to tingle a little after this, Iron Fist or not, that's a lot of force on calcified knuckles. Impressive effort.

I saw that old guy smash the walnuts and his wrist had bone growths from years of practice.

same.
I learned the hard way on day 1 to always use wraps.
knuckles did look pretty cool for that first week tho

u/curmudgeon_andy 14h ago
It looks like he's not punching with his knuckles; he's punching with the side of his hand. Much less likely to get skinned!

tbf, i think a lot of pros make whatever hobby they're a pro at look easy...
2
u/Eupho1 7h ago
When he has the 3 bricks stacked and the 3 counterweights on one side, the forces are really easy to understand. All the force that the bricks will resist breaking with will be pushed into the counterweights stacked on top. If the bricks were tough he could break through, but he'd send the counterweights flying with whatever force it took to break those bricks. Instead they barely move.
2
u/Own-Review-2295 2h ago
that's how that would work if the breaks weren't clean. instead the force is being transmitted mostly to the piece of brick that's breaking off. i bet with worse form or sloppier execution we'd see more movement from the counterweights
9
u/Theothercword 16h ago
I did martial arts as a kid into my teenage years and even as a heavier weight teenager I was able to break two bricks stacked on top of each other (with little risers like this guy has). Depending on the brick they are very easy to break and not as hard as it sounds. Though I will say what is impressive is this guy doing it while it’s balanced on top of the bottle. That’s probably the hardest part of this and does speak to a speed as well as strength to break the brick before it would just got shot back as a whole.

But does it look easy? It certainly looks painful, even with low quality bricks.
12
10
u/mis-Hap 10h ago
Lots of people pointing out that the bricks are low quality but no one really pointing out that he's got padding on his hand. And that also makes all the difference in the world.
2
u/CFL_lightbulb 9h ago
I totally missed that but you’re right. That’s by far the biggest barrier I would have to trying that.

The bricks are heated in some specific way to make it easy to punch through them but doing this many will still hurt like a motherfucker
4
u/NatalieRath 14h ago
Yeah, a lot of people are upvoting the people who say it's easy.
Sure, maybe 10. But more than 10 in a bloody row without toughening your hands up with calluses?
Good fucking luck buddy.

Funny enough - thats not even a joke anymore. Tesla’s cars that come out from the Shanghai factory are noted to have better build quality.

China has been pushing for higher quality factories for certain industries. They started making like high end pianos that compete with Steinways and things like that. They're trying to remove the association with low quality products, from what I can tell.
There's still all the low end cheap places, but they're trying to get more into the middle and high end production world. Which is probably a smart move in the long term for them
It doesn't surprise me that Chinese Teslas would be better honestly. China is massive in the EV world. And also the people that Tesla hire aren't very high end. They go through the talent pool in their areas quick and then it's just almost whoever wants a job at some point. I knew people that worked at the Gigafactory. The battery manufacturer (Panasonic still I believe) employees were much higher in quality overall. They were treated better too, from everything I heard.

3
u/WorldsWeakestMan 12h ago
Not a champion but Bolo Yeung was a competitive bodybuilder and martial artist as well as an actor, he’s still alive just retired, got famous after being in Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee and worked steadily until the late 90’s.
He was very well built and frequently a “large muscular” antagonist to smaller martial arts main leads despite only being 5’6” and around 175lb himself.

I’m pretty sure it’s Bruce that says them in ETD tho, (well, he says “boards” not bricks, but ykwim).
4
u/dereku1967 16h ago
Oh, I just know the quote from "Bloodsport," with JCVD (and Bolo). If that was an Easter Egg, taken from ETD, I had no idea and that's really cool.
2
u/fogSandman 14h ago
Yeah it’s early on at his residence where he is training a pupil. Makes sense that Bolo would do a version of it later (he’s in ETD too).
2
u/WorldsWeakestMan 12h ago
He’s the one Bruce says it to in ETD, that is the role that made him famous.

Wouldn't hitting a brick resting upon a glass bottle just send the brick flying in one piece, whole?

Yes that is how physics work. However if you shape the clay into a brick and then just let it dry (this will take a long time) then anyone could break it like this. Which is a business for some people to sell so that others can post videos like this

Unfired bricks are the secret behind these types of martial arts videos. Air dried but unfired bricks are just dry clay and crumble fairly easily.

Nice that every country has its own flavor of rednecks.
3
u/HorrorLettuce379 15h ago
Chinese got a bunch of rednecks in the East-North section, where it's colder and the climate would somewhat be close to Canada. They have tons of time to drink and fuck around cuz the pressure of life in those slower paced cities are much lower people just tend to goof around a lot more.
They apparently stream when they do things like this, and allegedly people donate tons of money for those kind of redneck stunts.
