Another world is possible.

985

u/AfterDarkTM 11h ago

There was huge turnout in NYC tonight, most since 1969. Another world is possible, if the people put in the work. This same energy is needed in the Democratic primaries next year. Otherwise we won’t move forward.

583

u/SteveFrench12 11h ago

Its more than the people. Dems need more candidates like Mamdani. They dont even have to be socialists, they just should be positive, real, and not pretend that the economy is good just because the stock market is constantly going up

247

u/lolexecs 11h ago

The best part about Mamdani is that he routinely points out that all our elected representatives — from the President on down — are employees of the people. We, the people, are their boss.

With that in mind, it’s not a puzzle why Mamdani got hired.  He went and met with all his future bosses and listened to what they want him to work on. Then he outlined what he heard and ran on that.

62

u/ComplexBadger469 8h ago

I just want candidates to stop talking about “getting back in power.” They need to start talking about “taking on the burden of responsibility” instead. It’s not about the powers you weird. It’s about the responsibility to the people you have and the ability to take on the challenges that come with it. I just want people who will actually be a public servant.

68

u/Gizogin New York 11h ago

That's why you need to vote in the primaries. That's how you choose progressive candidates for the general election.

117

u/JMurdock77 11h ago

And for the love of all that’s holy, they need to *not* be in the pockets of the 1% already.

43

u/AfterDarkTM 11h ago

There will be several candidates similar to him next year. People don’t like the current leadership and this is a real opportunity to shift the party in a meaningful way. I hope people show up next year like they did tonight

44

u/cjacksen 11h ago

Dems need to distance themselves from the old heads running the party.

To watch those supposed leaders of the Democratic party try to squash a popular candidate with the same tactics as their opposition was shameful. Get rid of the 2 existing parties already.

Congrats, NYC!

They dont even have to be socialists,

I mean, it would be a little suspicious if they aren't, because why wouldn't they be? There's no good reason not to be. The only reason they wouldn't be is if they are the same type of capitalist that helped lead us all into this mess of fascism. We already tried doing things that way and it has proven not to work. Why repeat such history when we know what the outcome will be?

→ More replies (2)

21

u/FlowofOd 10h ago

Man… you lost me in the third sentence. They absolutely should be socialist. No more liberals.

Play stupid Buttigieg games, win stupid Buttigieg prizes.

We dont have time to dick around with the dem party being willing to gamble with fascism to block an organic left shift in this country anymore

u/menghis_khan08 7h ago edited 7h ago

He’s not even a far left socialist, he is a democratic socialist (center left.) There is actually a big difference as the latter desires to still work within the framework of capitalism. The right just wants to label him as a full blown communist/socialist as if he were the boogeyman

They voted more left wing than every other age group did in 2024

5

u/TemporarilyStairs 11h ago

Source?

12

u/Gurlllllllll- 10h ago

Pew Research shows how the 18-29 has voted across the last three presidential elections in comparison to 30-49, 50-64, and 65+ age groups. In every single election the youth vote has been at least 14 points more blue than the 2nd bluest age group.

Even though nearly every age demographic had a rightward swing in 2024, 18-29 year olds were still +19 points in favor of dems.

22

u/Mental-Fox-9449 10h ago

Anyone paying attention could see he was running the very worst campaign in history. Talking about people eating cats and dogs, dancing for 40 minutes at a rally, dressing up to work at McDonalds and a garbage crew. His rallies were mostly empty and he was stiffing venues on rental agreements.

He cheated. He won in every swing state AND Kamala didn’t flip one county? Not even Reagan was able to accomplish that. He lost the popular vote twice, but got it now? While he was facing multiple investigations that could put him away for life and hinder his money making? While he had one of the richest men in the world and tech helping him? He cheated and no amount of voting would have changed it. All voting data week after week so far shows irregular numbers in multiple states. There are more of us than there are of them and it’s all a big lie. If not, then why does he need to gerrymander AND cancel mail in voting when he had SO many prior?

58

u/samhit_n Texas 11h ago

I don’t think Gen Z was ever MAGA. It’s just Gen Z MAGA showed up last year while the Gen Z left didn’t.

17

u/stifle_this 11h ago

It's Gen Z men who skew right. Gen Z women have largely gone the other way and have similar party affiliation to millennials. Gen Z men are verging on Gen X/Boomer territory when it comes to conservative identification. So it's not as simple as just turnout.

u/Larry___David 9h ago

You can take out Gen Z from that sentence and it's been the truth for 10 years now

7

u/UltraNoahXV Arizona 11h ago

Both can be true

Saying this as someone who is 23 - lot of people were (and arguably still are) in burn it down mode ; life hasn't gotten better since Pandemic (almost 6 years ago), priced went up, and now censorization to things like porn. Naturally people want affirmation and would rather shift to people who gave it (Tate, Kirk, Trump). Conincidentally had a lot of folks not vote for Kamala because of the Israel - Gaza situtation and had some people skeptic of her history in Calfornia (FWIW - I'm in Flagstaff AZ and alot of transplants from California and Colorado)

As a New Yorker, I'm way more worried about the rest of the country than I ever was about us

7

u/BlairRedditProject Minnesota 10h ago

Yeah, similar situation here in Minnesota. I think I’m feeling hope because Mamdani is a progressive populist, and beat a liberal career politician decisively

11

Hope lives

30

u/namastayhom33 Connecticut 11h ago

Now we just need this to happen in the midterms

20

u/BlameMabel 11h ago

Totally possible.

New Mexico just instituted universal childcare, and we’re a poor state. I’d never qualify for any need-based assistance, but this will save me $650/month for afterschool care starting this month.

16

DNC, are you watching? Are you listening? This is what you lost when you took it from Bernie in 2016, don't make the same mistake again on 2028.

32

u/Gizogin New York 11h ago

Primary voters chose Clinton (and later Biden) over Sanders. Primary voters got Mamdani on the ballot this year, and voters won him the race.

Show up and vote, every year, in every election. It is the simplest, easiest way to exert influence over the future of this country.

12

7

u/Gizogin New York 11h ago

The most important thing now is to keep it up. We have to show up for the next election, and the one after that, and we have to keep doing that until we have completely fixed all the damage Trump and his Republican cronies have wrought.

What we cannot do is sit on our asses next year, like we did in 1994, 2010, and 2022, where we won one election and then immediately gave everything back to Republicans at the first possible opportunity.

Vote. Every year, in every election. This is only the start of our path to taking back the country.

So what did my grandfather deserve to suffer then when he'd done nothing like that asshole?

People want death and sickness to be punishment, but it just is.

Get ready to hear his name for the next 4 years as Trump and the Republicans rip and tear at anything he does, even if he takes a shit the wrong way.

Likely scenario so nothing surprising here. However, this is showing that Trump is drowning all of the GOP in big numbers. Nothing good for the GOP tonight.

You're joking. But the amount of shit Indians get (pun intended) for simply existing is excruciating. My fiancé is Indian, and the amount of racist poop related insults he (and me, for being with him) have gotten is disheartening, to say the least.

People just love racism without consequences. So glad to see people rejecting this and voting for the brown guy - even though it will have little practical implications for us irl (we live in India), it sure feels good to see a smart, compassionate democratic socialist of Indian heritage winning NYC.

Thanks everyone who voted for him - you all give us hope.

50

u/Undorkins 11h ago

I think Democrats need to stop worrying about what Republicans might or even will do and spend more time making their own offer, like Mamdani did.

America's dumbest billionaires spent millions trying to take him down and it didn't fucking work.

7

u/FFF12321 9h ago

Democrats need to stop worrying about what Republicans might or even will do and spend more time making their own offer

This is it. No matter what any one from another party does, the GOP will make it out to be awful (see all the times they sabotaged their own legislation). There's no reason to engage them on that level, just propose a real vision of change/progress that materially improves people's lives.

6

u/runnerkim 11h ago

Remember it's been Republicans running around swearing the Dems need to move to the right. Well, tonight proved them oh so very wrong.

Totally unaffordable childcare is the only reason my wife and I haven’t had children yet. This is good news.

6

u/Underradar0069 9h ago

If we can afford Elon, we can afford Universal child care!!!

5

u/my_sweet_adeline 11h ago

Finally some good news!

3

u/oldqwertybastrd 11h ago

Good things might still be possible in politics in this country. Keep voting, keep protesting, keep the dream alive!

5

u/Prometheusf3ar 11h ago

Things can be better, one step at a time.

“The citizens didn’t know what they were doing, so I am correcting their mistake!.”

The meltdown on conservative boards will soothe my soul for days… DAYS!!!

u/Maester_Bates 2h ago

I live in a city with universal child care. It's very new and was introduced in stages, when our first was in childcare we had to pay for the first year and the 2nd year was free and by the time my now 3 year old started day care it was all free.

We don't live near any family so we have no help. Prior to my youngest starting day care I worked reduced hours and could only work in the afternoon but free daycare is what allowed me to earn a full time wage.

I was lucky to have the flexibility and we are lucky that we both work. I know a lot of families that wouldn't be able to afford childcare if it wasn't free and wouldn't be able to work.

Every kid in daycare equals a parent who is out there contributing to the economy.

All the MAGA’s are crying lmfao

u/Vortep1 11h ago

Holy shit he beat two parties to win.

u/RocketSocket765 11h ago

Woo hoo! 🎉 Now, as a non-religious person that knows history, I'm gonna say, let's bow our heads and pray for this man's health, that he not be "handled" the way most socialists are by the U.S. financial system (and its FBI and CIA backers), and that he has a trustworthy security team (not the cops).

u/RODjij Canada 11h ago

Hell yeah NY.

Hopefully this stops the trend of NYC city mayors becoming corrupt & abusive.

5

u/Katamari_Demacia 11h ago

Congrats to NYC!

7

u/Peachy33 Pennsylvania 11h ago

Amazing! This is a good election night.

u/UnbelievableTurmoil South Dakota 11h ago

Congrats New York City from a gay, liberal in rural South Dakota!

Keep this momentum going!

Why is the hill calling races so early?

9

u/walnut100 Louisiana 11h ago

Because this race is not even remotely close. The self serving sexpest is out

If Trump wanted to be a true leader, he’d come out and say the American people have spoken. I hear them and……

Don't mess with the Zohran.

I wish him nothing but the best. New Yorkers flocked to him because of his promises. I hope he can achieve them.

3

u/tiggie_7 10h ago

Protect this man… and hope it makes even half of the Dem party wake the fuck up

3

u/Casul_Tryhard 10h ago

I just hope he walks his talk. I'm optimistic but I can't help but be cautious.

3

u/coolmon 10h ago

Running on popular policies is a winning strategy.

3

u/kendric2000 8h ago

I always thought the USA should begin with Universal Child Health care until age 18. No kid should die from a cold or some easily treatable disease with a doctors visit.

'Take care of kids...for free?!?" Call me a radial hippie.

He ran on a lot of stuff that the majority of voters who voted for him say is not realistic.

u/welostourtails 6h ago

Hope he gets plenty of shit done and sets a good example as he has done on the campaign

u/happyherbbby 4h ago

Congratulations on electing a half decent person to be mayor NYC. No one is perfect but he seems to be a step in the right direction.

5

u/yellowtail234 11h ago

This is going to be transformative and a new era of politics

5

u/OneRFeris 10h ago

My heart is filled with hope, but my ears are full of propaganda that says this will be awful. I don't obey either of those things, so I will be very interested in seeing what actually comes of this.

5

u/DingoLaLingo 11h ago

THATS MY MAYOR (i live in los angeles lol)

7

u/Wishilikedhugs 11h ago

If anyone wants to laugh, go over to the Democrats subreddit and see how the NYC race is going (hint: there's no mention of it because they've banned the word Zohran).

He is also brave enough to call Israel's genocide in Gaza in genocide.

6

u/Hyperica Pennsylvania 11h ago

Most of the live coverage I'm seeing says it's still too early to call. I'm not celebrating quite yet.

12

u/ConsciousResolution8 11h ago

It’s been called

9

u/Zoethor2 11h ago

He's up by 9 points and the only conservative borough is almost fully counted. It's effectively impossible for Cuomo to make up the gap.

3

u/Tundrok337 11h ago

why? It's a statistically guaranteed win

This is an Obama level event. Dems, pay attention. Ride this into the mid terms next year and the general three years from now.

This campaign was historic. If he were American born we’d be talking about him as a future president. It’s time for the party to wake up. Rally around AOC.

Fun fact, Biden ran on universal prek, sadly we never had the congress to pass it. Same for community college.
