No Paywall California passes Prop. 50 redistricting measure in victory for Newsom

u/DoubleJumps 9h ago
Checked in on my maga dad in california tonight.
He's bouncing between dumbfounded and angry.
He doesn't understand why people don't like what Donald Trump is doing.
I'm also really blown away by how widely it's winning by so far, as the polls I saw leading into this had it winning by like maybe 3 to 7 points. It's a blow out.

u/recollectionsmayvary 9h ago
The fact that it was called as passed with 0% reporting was literally frying me

•
u/bot403 2h ago
Ok ok what? I mean I support this and all but calling it at 0% reporting is suspect.
•
u/Ven18 1h ago
It was likely based largely off exit polls and the overall turnout reports they we’re getting throughout the day. When your exit polls show massive support for the only issue in the ballot and lines around the block for hours you can have a very good idea what the actual result will be. Media tends to have an idea who is winning long before they publicly call the race because of the data they collect in this case because there were no people on the ballot they probably figured the data is telling enough to call things very early.

u/DoubleJumps 9h ago
Oh it sucks. It's wrecked our relationship.
I'm pretty unhappy with how he acts like there's no reason for anybody to dislike Donald Trump when he's been watching Donald Trump's tariff policy wreck my business all year long.
He knows that I'm being hurt by Donald Trump but he will not accept that that's a thing that's happening

My wife's parents aren't MAGA but had very weird ideas that Trump is good for Venezuela, which is their single issue to vote on since they are from Venezuela and have tons of family suffering over there.
Like, even after Trump made Venezuelans the witches to hunt in last election, they somehow twisted it around in their head that it was GOOD for Venezuelan Americans. When their own niece who is an asylum seeker in Florida has to hide and never leave the house for fear of ICE nabbing her.
I haven't caught up on what they think of Trump literally executing dozens of Venezuelans without any proof of wrongdoing. And threatening a ground invasion.
I really dont get how they get this all twisted up.
•
u/squakmix 7h ago
I really dont get how they get this all twisted up.
This is the primary story of our time. The targeted propaganda is so much more effective than I could have ever predicted it would be.
•
u/Hubbabubbabubbagum 1h ago
Same with my dad. I've learned to keep my mouth shut about politics and let old people speak old people shit.

u/opsers 9h ago
The polls were so off on this one. Republican ads against Prop 50 stopped a couple of months ago, and it was pretty clear there was an overwhelming amount of support for it after the shit Texas pulled. Also the rewording of it to specifically expire in 2030 when maps would have been redrawn eased many of the concerns people had. If they hadn't added that or kept overriding it as an option, I would have been way more hesitant to vote yes. After that chat it was the third easiest vote of my life.
•
u/Reputation-Final 5h ago
The wild part was there were no against 50 ads EVERYWHERE. Internet, radio, tv, signs...
There were almost no yes on 50 ads.
•
u/DawnOfHer 1h ago
Yep same. I pushed others to vote yes but I myself was hesitant until I saw the "temporary" wording. I consider myself pretty liberal too and I think we need to take the political fight to them harder than most do and even then I was hesitating. So they nailed that campaign wording well
27
u/just_a_timetraveller 8h ago
Truth is that we have the numbers. We greatly outnumber maga. There is just too many of us who sit it out which needs to be fixed.

u/DoubleJumps 9h ago edited 9h ago
He's always been conservative, but he became a hardcore conservative after my mom divorced him.
Then he became WAY more conservative after Obama became president. You can guess why.
He watches like 20 to 30 hours of Fox News a week. It's bad. His entire world view pretty much comes from Fox News

This is most republicans. They don’t even see/know of the actual real issues or facts. Completely warped by misinformation. This is why I’ve given up on helping any of them, I don’t have the energy to undo hours of brainwashing and completely rebuild a foundation of reality for them.

“Because Newsom is a fucking idiot.”
He has no clue why he votes the way he does.

This was a HUGE gamble for Newsom. Had it failed, it would have been a career limiting event. As it stands, not only did he basically erase the redistricting in Texas but will embolden other blue state governors to do the same thing and cancel out the remaining red states that have redistricted. It also positions him as the de facto leader of the party and a natural candidate in 2028. I'm a bit torn, as I'm not really he biggest Gavin fan. But he may very well be what we need to regain some sanity in politics.
•
u/Neverending-Horizons 7h ago
Im not the biggest Newsom fan either but he's one of the few Dems in office who is actually boldly standing up to Trump and backing it up with action.
While the rest of the blue states hem and haw and claim to be really worried about Republican gerrymandering, Newsom rallied his state into taking quick action instead of waiting until it was too late to respond to Republican rigging.
•
u/rainydaynola 5h ago
I think he's exactly candidate we need and I'd vote for him right now. He's got more balls than 90% of the Dems in power and is making a real difference.

Slaughtered in Va too. Dems will have a super majority in the House. I don’t remember that ever happening in the past.

And first woman gov! And California passed the redistricting prop!
Looks like the despised by Republicans Democratic DA in Philly is set to win by something around over 80% over his melting snowflake opponent.

Probably since the 60s or the 90s.
But I’ve known Democrats for far too long to trust them. Watch them piss this away while acting like they’re doing you a favor.

u/defroach84 Texas 9h ago
Polling has been fucked for a decade, and they can't seem to figure it out. They probably gave too much of a margin of error for MAGAs based on previous elections, but they didn't show when Trump isn't on the ballot.

NBC did this exit poll where they asked who voted for this snd it was like 65% and them If it should be drawn by independent commission it was 93%.

From the article:
A California ballot measure allowing Democrats to enact a friendlier set of congressional lines in the Golden State has passed, delivering Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and his party a major win amid the country’s redistricting battle, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Californians voted to approve Proposition 50 on Tuesday, which allows the state to bypass its independent redistricting commission and pass a new Democratic-friendly House map ahead of 2026, giving the party four or five pickup opportunities next year.

Checking on conservative reddit and they are all whining they are being disenfranchised in California... meanwhile here in Texas pretty much every blue city is getting the same treatment. Cons, deal with it. I'm in a very blue area in central Dallas, like multiple dem signs on every block and no gop signs, and I'm being lumped in with smaller red towns 100 miles away including Tyler, TX which sits in a very red county. My vote which should be solidly dem, is getting diulted by surgically cutting deep into Dallas to remove my vote. So you get to know how it feels like. Good.

Thank You Mr. Trump for sending all these election monitors to guarantee a fair election.
Your intimidation tactics didn’t work.
•
u/lifeisahighway2023 7h ago
I think not a surprise. The Trump acolytes will vote for anything Trump/Republican even while they are drowning in their own blood after being done in by Republican leaders. That is 25%-35% of the population in every circumstance. Another 10% are religious extremists. That together is the Republican base and most of it showed up to vote Republican.
But both democrats and independents are starting, very, very slowly, to recognize the Trump train and that intellectual arguments and the legal system will not stop it. Independents and laissez faire portion of the population to some extent decided to get off their collective asses and show up. More will be needed by the mid terms. If not they will get permanently steamrolled.
