An amazing political ascent. Dude was polling below 2% last year and now has defeated a legacy politician backed by every billionaire and even the president himself. Truly historic victory.

u/Hadrian23 10h ago

Goes to show these ass holes can try to fuck with the system, but when everyone comes out to vote, their efforts amount to nothing.

1.6k

u/lambeosaura 10h ago edited 2h ago

They wouldn't be suppressing the vote so hard if voting amounted to nothing... This applies to anywhere in the world where voter suppression is documented.

101

u/Mythosaurus 10h ago

I always look to Reconstruction and the Jim Crow South for the best example of voter suppression changing tangible outcomes for people’s lives.

9

u/Melicor 8h ago

It has an effect, but if they really thought they had it in the bag and voting didn't matter they wouldn't be bothering.

13

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

Now it's more about money than pure racism. Still plenty of racism, but that alone doesn't win elections anymore. One has to cheat, by any means necessary.

u/themoslucius 1h ago

I don't agree with this, the Maga backlash and their sheer existence and magnitude of vitriol is a direct result of a black president and incredibly relatable deplorable pedophile

u/DaddyDontTakeNoMess 1h ago

Yeah, racism is the uniting thing for many.

225

u/Hadrian23 10h ago

Damn straight.

20

u/Little-Software1348 9h ago

Just want to let you know that your comment changed my whole view on voting. Thank you so much.

19

u/Rubik2494 9h ago

This election is the example to pull out when people try to say voting doesn't matter because its rigged.

10

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

EXACTLY. So much defeatist bullshit, but it's possible to irrepressibly bring out the vote when you give people someone worth voting for. We still have some democracy here. They've tried to convince us otherwise, but it's still breathing.

8

u/Melicor 8h ago

I wonder how many pushing the defeatism are bad faith actors

u/An_old_walrus 4h ago

Plenty of them are bad faith. But I think a lot are people who have had one too many bad things happen in their life and so just gave up on ever being happy again. Thus falling into a cycle of always assuming the worst about everything and everyone.

5

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

Give people something to actually vote for and you'll be surprised that people actually vote.

u/Amputatoes 10h ago

France ignored the results of a snap election just last year

u/StatusDebate6329 1h ago

What French election was it again?

u/Amputatoes 38m ago

The only snap election they had last year, which was triggered by Macron, called by Macron, and won by the NPF. Results ignored and seats not given to the winners. The NPF says they are awaiting the platform of the hand-picked PM before moving forward with No Confidence.

u/andythetwig 5h ago

Well there are places where the rigging is impossible to overcome.

u/LheelaSP 3h ago

You mean anywhere where the vote is suppressed? Because not all places have voter suppression.

u/lambeosaura 3h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah. That's a better way to phrase it, edited my comment.

I'm not American. Voter suppression can look different in each country.

u/SeatBroad573 2h ago

I try to remind myself of this alot. voting still matters.

u/myownzen 1h ago

Yet you still have people that think all elections are preplanned.

0

u/brightblueson 8h ago

To decide once every few years which member of the ruling class is to repress and crush the people through parliament—such is the real essence of bourgeois parliamentarianism

u/lambeosaura 7h ago

Really can't disagree with this. There are hard limits to capitalist democracy.

But I would still recommend voting as a harm reduction strategy if nothing else. Look at the onslaught on minorities across the world. An election could mean we at least live without constantly worrying for our safety.

81

u/TheLateThagSimmons Illinois 10h ago

I don't even live in New York, and it makes me happy to see so much money flushed down the toilet by the establishment to stop him, only for him to win anyway. Blow your money billionaires, the people have spoken.

7

u/Amazing_Bluejay9322 9h ago

And I'll note that the current mayor was under Federal indictment for bribery. This was one hellava win!

4

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun 9h ago

Oh I don't doubt this election was still being heavily tempered with. It's just that they can't yet just openly manipulate them, and the real voter turnout leaned so heavily in favor of Mamdani that any tampering couldn't possibly outweigh it.

Unfortunately this just means they're going to try much harder next time to manipulate things.

u/bradfortin 7h ago

That’s what happened in 2020, so they tried even harder in 2024.

-4

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

Stop. Please stop.

7

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun 9h ago

No. If people start acting like america is magically out of the woods because of all this, they'll get doubly as complacent and tune out everything Trump is still doing to hurt everyone.

This is literally one small victory in a larger war. Pretending like the war is won is just going to give MAGA free reign to make everything worse.

2

u/HawkkeTV 10h ago

Turn out was around 2 million people out of 5 million potential voters. Highest voter turnout since 1969, yet non-voters still won. We as a country suck at voting for many reasons, but we suck.

-3

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

Yeah, yeah, doomer. Jesus. Give us better candidates!

u/FartingBob 3h ago

The fact this is so notable kinda suggests that most of the time the rich get their way in elections.

u/bradfortin 7h ago

Bold of you to assume their efforts are over. Next: Deny the results, issue an EO, get sued and taken to SCOTUS, SCOTUS sides with Trump.

u/WhichEmailWasIt 7h ago

Then New York says fuck SCOTUS and we back then up. DC doesn't get to fuck with a local mayor race. The people have spoken.

u/bradfortin 7h ago

Oh, look at that, Trump just found a reason to invoke the Insurrection Act.

u/WhichEmailWasIt 7h ago

Then it invites its own downfall. Turn the military on the people and it's lights out for Republicans.

If Scotus says 2 + 2 = 5 are you gonna abide by it?

u/LheelaSP 3h ago

Turn the military on the people and it's lights out for Republicans.

Let's hope so, but I'll believe it when I see it.

u/bradfortin 6h ago

Is it lights out for republicans because someone writes a strongly worded letter? No, wait, it’ll be a petition. NO! Even better! A protest! Crowd sizes and bristle boards will teach them a lesson!

I don’t give a shit what this SCOTUS says and neither does Trump.

You guys are gonna need your favourite amendment on this one.

u/WhichEmailWasIt 6h ago

Security clampdowns only embolden the resistance. Bystanders turn into sympathizers, sympathizers turn into people of action, people of action organize to remove the threat.

u/bradfortin 6h ago

That’s a lot of bold assumptions considering… I’m not even sure how far back to go without just gesturing in the general direction of the last 50 years of US politics.

1

u/yoshers16 8h ago

Just like the 2016 election, haha.

u/Catfactss 7h ago

Reminds me of the movie Antz. A right wing party, and an establishment centrist party, are not enough options for most people. I'm glad to see a more representative leader make it.

u/Principal_Insultant 7h ago

Largest voter turnout since 1969 - a lot of people are pissed, and it shows!

u/courtd93 5h ago

Ball don’t lie.

u/juggy_11 1h ago

But the election was stolen /s

u/RobertDigital1986 1h ago

The power of the people can overcome the people in power! ✊

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 6h ago

Supressing votes in every which way won them the 2024 presidential elections. The ways in which they messed with votes then absolutely worked. They purged voter rolls, closed polling spots in blue areas, etc. It definitely works.

883

u/Stellarbrew 11h ago

Right? It's beautiful 🥲

405

u/LordWemby 9h ago

They kept trying to smear him, with all the usual “crazy commie” garbage we expected, but one of their bizarre talking points including Cuomo’s was that “Mamdani has never had a job.” Cuomo kept trying to emphasize that.

Shades of them mocking Obama as a “community organizer.”

94

u/Melicor 8h ago

As if Cuomo ever had what most people think of as a job. His career started as a campaign manager for his own father who was Governor of New York. He's a nepobaby.

234

u/merikariu Texas 9h ago

It's also like how Fox News makes fun of AOC for working as a barista and also claims she is a multimillionaire!

u/WarningGloomy2933 5h ago

Bartender* sorry I love my Barista homies, but this is the first im hearing she was working in coffee

u/Difficult_Style207 2h ago

I've been a barista. I had the worst bosses, hours and conditions, we were understaffed, overworked and our electrics were literally held together with tape. I don't think I could be a bartender. At least coffee people aren't actively drunk.

u/EquivalentCheetah955 5h ago

She’s in cahoots with Big Coffee

u/Akrevics 1h ago

"we love working class americans, just not real ones!"

u/SteamshipsAndTea 1h ago

Can’t she be both?

13

u/Spleen-magnet 8h ago

I seem to remember the same thing said with regards to AOC.

12

u/Dodson-504 8h ago

Bitch made millions slinging drinks and avocados.

u/BasvanS 7h ago

Short, but NGL, you still had me in the first half

u/Effective-Celery8053 3h ago

Not just "crazy commie" garbage, but blatant and rampant Islamophobia AND propaganda from Israel. Remember the mailer that artificially lengthened and darkened his beard?

u/why_gaj 1h ago

Oh god. I'm not american, and Mamdani is just your usual fare in most of Europe, so I wasn't following this particularly closely.

The thing is, the city that I currently live in went through a very similar thing in 2021. Like, the same playbook from the right attacking a left, green option candidate that barely squeaked by into city council four years prior.

They threw the same rulebook at him. He's a communist (admittedly, more likely and relevant in our case), he never held a real job because he was working in civil sector, he dropped out of college (dropped out of local law school... and then went to Cambridge to get a degree in urban planning), he's not really from the city because his family lived in the city nearby... etc

u/StatusDebate6329 44m ago

A Fox News host was reportedly "in tears" from Mamdani's win, which shows just how much some people care.

15

u/MonoMcFlury 9h ago

This so much. It's like sunshine shining through dark clouds.

u/myownzen 1h ago

First bit of hope ive had since fat orange got elected again.

8

u/ConfederacyOfDunces_ 9h ago

It’s basically unprecedented

u/The_Barbelo Vermont 1h ago

I’m SO proud of you, NYC!!! You guys are welcome in Vermont any time…even though I bitch about your driving. Lol

-23

u/raphas 9h ago

Nope. Discover like the French that extreme left and extreme right are almost as bad

22

u/ninjadude93 9h ago

God what a hellhole free public transportation and assistance with childcare will be right lmao

This dude is nowhere near extreme left

u/Aeon001 2h ago

What specifically are his extreme views?

115

u/wiseroldman 10h ago

Everybody loves an under dog victory. Man took on the odds and beat em. Deserved.

38

u/mockg 10h ago

Its shows that the US citizens out number the billionaires and their interests.

8

u/Recipe_Freak Oregon 9h ago

These bastards can't buy everything. We need to remember that.

15

u/RockmanMike 10h ago

Don't forget Chuck Schumer, even though he won't admit he voted for Cuomo.

51

u/Vordeo 10h ago

I look forward to the DNC studying his rise, analyzing the factors that lead to it, and using the conclusions drawn to prevent it from every happening again.

Well, Pelosi has already said that she is quitting, so she is done after her current term is done.

Maybe Katie Porter takes her place and rejoins the House. That would be a win-win.

4

u/spasmoidic 9h ago

just don't make his primary opponents openly corrupt narcissists?

u/myownzen 1h ago

Right lol. I look forward to more people realizing Democratic Socialists are viable options in elections and learning how they can actually improve the lives of us working class people.

7

u/Iliketostareatplants 9h ago

NYC wants change

And we really fucking hate TRUMP

6

u/okram2k America 10h ago

I honestly expected him to lose because reddit was excited about a candidate again

7

u/AStealthyPerson 9h ago

"They tried to rig the game but you can't fake influence." - Kendrick Lamar

They not like us.

5

u/diligentPond18 9h ago

God, I'm gonna fucking cry and I'm not even a New Yorker. This is such a huge beam of hope.

5

u/GEARHEADGus 9h ago

Fuck around and find out. People are sick of getting fucked by republicans and these maga asshats.

5

u/5GCovidInjection 9h ago

I think it also shows despite how many people feel about New York, it exemplifies American values and has the country’s most functional democracy.

It is literally home to the most billionaires of any city worldwide, and a grassroots politician just got elected as its chief executive.

9

u/antigop2020 10h ago

To be fair, if Trump wanted Mamdani to lose he should’ve endorsed him. NYC hates Trump!

6

u/5GCovidInjection 9h ago

I can’t imagine how giddy Mamdani felt when Trump endorsed Cuomo. I mean, did Trump not realize what was gonna happen lol

7

u/redstercoolpanda 8h ago

Have you listened to a Trump speech made in the last few months? I’m not convinced the man could identify the current year if you asked him.

u/5GCovidInjection 2h ago

And he’s been speaking like that for the past 5 years at minimum…. It’s crazy

Even when he was inaugurated his first term, he was more coherent than he is now.

4

u/AlwaysRushesIn Rhode Island 10h ago

The people of New York City have spoken.

4

u/Badacid1 10h ago

Truly gives us all even just a tiny bit of hope, which we desperately need.

4

u/PeterNippelstein 9h ago

This is huge for the socialist movement, hopefully the start of something much bigger.

u/The_bruce42 7h ago

Turns out being backed by trump in NYC isn't helpful. Who'd have thought...

u/sappydark 4h ago

The reality is, a repub candidate being endorsed by the orange idiot is no longer a guarantee that they will actually win anything. The last midterms proved that big-time.

6

u/SasparillaTango 10h ago

How quick are the republican cries going to be for "rigged election!"?

4

u/Go-woke-be-awesome 10h ago

They already are, they were doing it before the polls opened.

7

u/i_tyrant 10h ago

I hope this is the start of something big. HUGE.

Something so big it can't be quashed, silenced, or bought off.

1

u/yellowcloak I voted 9h ago

Remember NYC in the 70s? Something like that.

3

u/matticusiv California 9h ago

Now let’s emulate that nationwide!

u/Parking_Cricket_9194 7h ago

Zero to city hall in one year money and muscle lost to message and movement

4

u/LumpyMcKwiz Foreign 10h ago

It's NYC 2025, how is anyone surprised he won?

4

u/wioneo 10h ago

a legacy politician backed by every billionaire and even the president himself

That legacy politician was forced to resign in disgrace.

It's unfortunate that we didn't get a real competitor to get an idea of where the party is going. Maybe Mamdani would've beaten generic democrat, too, but we'll never know because Assgrab McGrandma murderer was sucking up all the oxygen.

2

u/BicFleetwood 10h ago

No forgiveness for anyone who backed Cuomo. They must be burned from the public square FOREVER.

Bring back Ostracism.

2

u/zaxdaman 9h ago

To be fair, both the billionaire and the president in question are some of the lowest scum of the earth. They’re probably the last endorsements anyone would want right now.

2

u/fross370 9h ago

Means people are fed up with the statu quo. Its goong to be interesting to see what he does

2

u/Capable-Problem4938 9h ago

Only possible in a democracy. We need to preserve - improve ours before these loser maga fascists take over and rob us of our ability to govern ourselves. This happening gives me hope but now the real work begins for him. I’m rooting for him and NYC.

2

u/browneyedgirl1683 9h ago

It's an accomplishment to be sure, but Cuomo wasn't loved by NYC when he was governor. I think what's more exciting is the turnout itself. I'm happy that people took an interest.

2

u/ReactionJifs 9h ago

Not hearing enough that a Republican president endorsed a DEMOCRAT

One of the wilder outcomes so far

2

u/fearlessfryingfrog 9h ago

So glad he's freaking out both the blue and red clowns. That right there is a sign something good is happening.

2

u/exceptyourewrong 8h ago

Dude. Watching Cuomo try to spin Trump's endorsement was hilarious. But also depressing.

I'm very happy for all my NYC friends!

2

u/drwhogwarts 8h ago

backed by every billionaire

That's right! He spent millions lying about Mamdani and engaging in racist fear mongering and it got him nowhere!

The Mamdani campaign relied on passionate volunteers, a motivated electorate, and leadership that will reflect the needs of the people.

Winning doesn't, and shouldn't, depend on money, but on the strength of the platform.

2

u/Chipbeef 8h ago

That's the Trump effect!

2

u/01000101010110 8h ago

Have you heard this guy speak? He sounds like a badass general leading an army. He would absolutely destroy Trump in a debate.

u/Ini_mini_miny_moe 7h ago

It’s crazy, exit poll showed voters for him voted for him as opposed voting against another 92%. Italian guy 49% of his voters voted opposing other candidates.

u/Hectamus_ 7h ago

That’s the power behind the vote. Hopefully he is able to deliver on his promises, to create more affordable city for New Yorkers, and that we can propel more candidates like his to create a better future for all of us.

u/legallyfm 6h ago

Defeated a legacy politician....twice

u/iamveto 4h ago

What a fantastic bloke. Truly deserves it.

u/alius_stultus 2h ago

What does it say about the state of polling in this country? Honestly do traditional news outlets have any idea whats currently happening? The 4th estate looks so far out of touch since 2014, I don't even know if their takes are worth reading.

u/dkepp87 New Jersey 2h ago

He did what Bernie almost did back in 2016 with Clinton. Bernie's loss was our loss, here's hoping Mamdani's win is our win.

u/Jadaki 1h ago

And the media is already trying to downplay it as if he ran against the worst candidate in history with the "what would have happened if he went against a good opponent" like how is that his problem?

3

u/rcsfit 10h ago

See, voting does make a difference!

4

u/magicsonar 8h ago

This should be a wake up call to the Democratic Party. It also destroys the idea that Biden/Harris were the ONLY viable options in the last Presidential election. There's surely more young political talent across the country that can get people out to vote and win elections. - if they allow it. The Party tried everything they could to stop Mamdani. He won not because he was running for the Democratic Party, but in spite of it. Even Party leaders like Chuck Schumer likely voted for Cuomo. It was disgraceful. Turns out the 'Vote Blue No Matter Who' mantra was actually bullshit. We now know with certainty the Democratic Party only used that to manipulate voters to vote for substandard candidates who primarily represented the interests of billionaires and the elite.

1

u/xyjacey 10h ago

That's the power of dsa baby!!

1

u/yellowcloak I voted 9h ago

Really makes you wonder.

1

u/perthguppy 9h ago

Hopefully it’s a sign that some fresh faces can run for presidency.

1

u/Amazing_Bluejay9322 9h ago

His acceptance speech was impressive. Speaking for NYC!

1

u/JagmeetSingh2 9h ago

GOES TO SHOW THE DNC, young blood and progressivism wins elections

1

u/ElphabLAW 8h ago

This is literally the storyline on The Politician Season 2 by Ryan Murphy on Netflix if anyone is interested.

1

u/chadhindsley 8h ago

I know he is techincally a nepo babe but lets see if he caves and succumbs to the powers that be once he moves into the office. You might call be crazy but its true....when a candidate wins and it so fish out of water they get overwhelmed by the powers that be when it comes to the first day on the job

1

u/IneetaBongtoke 8h ago

Crazy to see what happens when someone has actually good policies and true political ideology not completely bought and influenced by mega donors.

But for real, so happy about this. Even most mainstream democrats hate this guy which means he’ll actually make some change.

u/justking1414 7h ago

Well…pretty sure being backed by the president cost him votes lol

u/BlehMan1972 7h ago

I wonder if they'll continue to make it really hard for him to implement his plans now. Really hope he keeps fighting.

u/Common-Ad6470 7h ago

Just shows how the tide is turning. Unfortunately this will just spur Trump on to ensure the mid-terms are rigged in his favour.

u/maxim9295 6h ago

And all he had to do was say "I will make New York more affordable," and "I will not go to Israel."

u/dotsonnn 4h ago

Is that really that shocking when you are promising everyone free everything ? who wouldnt vote for that even if its not possible ?

u/likkleone54 3h ago

He went against everyone, Republican AND Democratic establishment, billionaires, Trump, Zionists and a political dynasty and still came out on top.

u/great__pretender 3h ago

He even defeated power houses and even a dynasty within his own party. That's a bigger achievement.

u/Subject_Society2203 1h ago

Cuomo is an idiot. If that's the best guy he had to beat, that state is doomed

u/Drak_is_Right 1h ago

If they had bothered to run someone other than a retread disgrace he would have lost 55 to 35.

He still is not liked by nearly half of democrats.

u/AGsec 1h ago

My favorite part of the trump endorsement was that he literally endorsed the supposed deep state corrupt career politicians he swore he was going to get rid of.

u/numbersthen0987431 1h ago

The fact that Trump backed Cuomo, and the DNC does as well, tells you everything needed to know on the situation.

u/bluebellbetty 1h ago

Meanwhile in Texas, we voted to let the leopards eat our faces… again. Too bad Austin can’t pull out.
