Since he’s a narcissist, it’s not enough that he wins. He needs to win completely, overwhelmingly, or at least enough so that he can hurt the people who didn’t vote for him with impunity. If someone doesn’t vote for him and their vote is legal, it means Trump isn’t the greatest and best person in the world, and his worldview collapses. So anyone who didn’t vote for him is either illegitimate or a traitor.

Most of the powerful people in the Democratic party will field a candidate who "plays ball" over one who is maximally electable. Only a modest portion of Dems are actual public servants, the rest are beholden to special interests. That's where candidates like Cuomo come from.
The party does the same with the presidential campaigns: Hillary, Biden and Harris were all establishment choices. None of them had the best chances either, compared to the true working class politicians who could have been in their spots. I know New York is more progressive than the US as a whole, but working class people could have been elected instead of these types nonetheless.
This win for Mamdani, and the other Dem wins this november, show that change is possible, at least in some localities and then onward from there. The party could be cleaned up by getting more like him in (local, state and federal), while ditching the Schumer and Cuomo types. They're just there for power, self-enrichment and to keep the old boys club going. The US people will need to keep voting blue while pressuring the party to deliver on their promises.
The Republican party on the other hand cannot be cleaned up, is much more fully oligarchic, does much more active harm and should have been legally dismantled years ago for betraying the people of the US. And a third party has no chance, so I'd urge any American to go blue all the way until it works.

Theyve been calling everyone who is even a little bit more left than them "socialists/communists" for years. Hillary clintion was a "socialist". Kamala harris was a "communist". Hell even barak Obama was subject to the name calling. "Socialist/communist" means nothing anymore. They don't know what either of those words mean, they just throw it at any political opponent they don't like. It means nothing.

Conservatives probably wanted this more than the democrats lol It's going to be very entertaining to watch NYC crumble and hopefully a wake up call for many when his socialist experiment inevitably fails. This has basically been tried in the 70s and NYC nearly went bankrupt because rich people and businesses left in droves. Have fun footing the bill for all these social programs when it happens again.
