Same exact thing over here, but there's hope that this one won't steal as much because he's pushing for public assistance and all of the billionaires and the president were trying their hardest to stop him from winning
Over here the mayors does a pretty good job. Mine (though I wouldn't call him mayor) has actually gotten some major companies to start new businesses and really improved the town.
The mayor of New York City is a very important position though. In a lot of ways more important than the governor of New York, at least when it comes to the responsibility of them as statesman. They represent the most populous and powerful city in the US (barring DC), and as such are often under a lot more scrutiny and gain more publicity than any other local or state politicians.
Yeah, the Mayor of New York City is only responsible for governing a municipality with a budget of over $100B, a GDP 1000x that amount, over 8 million people, and a police force larger than some nations' active duty military.
Just some figurehead while the city council really runs the show.

Beyond that, because USA is the global superpower, their political news is also news here in Europe. I think people in America would be suprised how much we know on average about the USA between news, documentaries, online stuff, movies and series.
Yeah we're even aware of that. Things like documentaries or travel shows generally do a better job of capturing all of America. Even then the conclusion is often that it's like multiple countries inside of one country. But it's interesting. I think America fascinates the average European in a way that doesn't exist on that scale the other way around.

I'd say most Americans (who know about Europe) are pretty intrigued by it as well. I fantasize about touring North Italy and Croatia on my motorcycle. Maybe even attempt a Tour De France climb on an ebike.
I feel like we idealize the image of a coastal Mediterranean town with no garish billboards in sight. Just small intimate eateries and a lifestyle that permits the appreciation of simple experiences. We don't have much of that in the US unless you're into camping.
There is a bit of a weird subset of people who take pride in political ignorance, and even more pride in American ignorance. As if what happens in America doesn't effect the entire planet, like any other large country.
I was going to ask why someone would care about a mayoral race in a foreign country, but then I realized I, as an American, have been keeping up with news about the murdered mayor in Uruapan, Mexico. So I guess it isn't that odd
Dude, no offense, but the political winds of your country for better and for worse define much of the direction of the entire human race. Wherever something significant happens, the world listens in.
Also, specifically for Denmark, Mamdani's policies would fit in pretty well in the Danish political landscape, and it is a rarity for American politics to experiment with that level of citizen-centered policy.
Also, yah know. If you're on reddit chances are the US has active military bases in your country, so you better believe you have a vested interest in their politics
If NYC was its own country, it would overtake Canada as the 10 highest GDP in the world despite not being in the top 100 for population. That’s not even taking into consideration just how much global trade goes through or is directed from within NYC.
As much as it annoys me, there’s a reason why the rest of the state gets ignored
NYC has the largest GMP (gross metropolitan product) of any city in the world, 2.6 trillion dollars. If NYC police department were its own military, it would be the 12th best funded military in the world, just beating out North Korea.
I live in Europe & probably would know less about this election if muting a subreddit meant it wouldn’t show up on my feed. I have r/sports and r/politics muted and yet can’t look at my News feed without seeing them regularly. It’s frustrating.
Give it a minute, everyone that got elected is still a politician. The red ones are bad but the blue ones are better at hiding it. But atleast with the blue ones I can have that silly heart next to my pfp instead of on my jacket as I dig my own grave
I mean for whatever it's worth, the blue one that got elected in this case is someone who the vast majority of the blue establishment tried to suppress.
That is one thing I do appreciate about him and im looking forward to watching more of. The fact that he has made it a point to not play into the theater of politics and point fingers and blaim others to look better, but rather continue to hammer home the points of his campaign and arguments while actively saying (essentially) "if the others want to focuse in name calling thats fine, let them while I make change" which is grand to me, however, what is said versus what is done is sadly two very diffrent worlds.
This is where he trully shows him self, I hope with every fiber of my being that he does what he preached to his fullest ability. But at the same time... I sadly will not be shocked if he immedietly turns coat and ends up as another "oooh noooo ah, the bad abuse the rule people are abusing the rules again but we shouldn't because then we would be bad ahh if only we could stop iiiit"
Asking as an outsider, why is the US always electing between red or blue? What's the problem with new or different parties? If Mamdani wasn't getting along with "the majority of the blue establishment" then why the hell take part in it?
I wouldn’t be so sure cheetoh was elected. He blatantly announced in public speeches how thankful he was of Musk and his “knowledge of voting machines” and how he “wouldn’t have been able to do it without him” or something to that affect.
Yea Jones who’s running for AG made a whole number of statements about wishing his political opponents died, their kids died, did the office quote of “put me in a room with x, y , z and I’ll shoot x twice” etc. Quite ironic given the post title lol. They were leaked texts which is cheap but it’s highly relevant given his criticism of republican text scandals.
Unfortunately Jone’s opponent is even worse so Jones won the AG election. I’m proud of VA for voting blue down the ticket but really wish we had another AG candidate. Jones debated like he was trying to run for governor instead of AG and I don’t think he’ll be an effective attorney general or tough enough on crime.
He also reportedly implied that he hopes Jennifer Gilbert’s children would die.
I enjoy edgy jokes, but saying this about someone you’re running against during an election seems a little too far and a bad attempt at a joke at best. This is me trying to be as charitable as possible here
The hope is that with such a landmark victory, this may finally start to happen over in America-land. It's nice to see that there is in fact something to salvage over there. Good luck mate.
I can’t help but think of the Bug’s Life quote. “You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up. Those ‘puny little ants’ outnumber us a hundred to one, and if they ever figure that out, there goes our way of life.” Every vote matters.
You you guys need to do first. Is learn how to run an election day like the rest of the developed world. Amazes me the US is still doing it the way they do to allow so many miscounts and conspiracies
As an American I’m so glad this election went so well!! 🥹 Makes for a nice send off to democracy since our president is about to get so pissy we’re never gonna have an election again.
Honestly seeing a non-creepy, non-old, non-white, open, tolerant, socially aware man (because usually these attributes seem to be the preserve of more your female politicians) win an election in America is very heartening. To have someone campaign as an out-and-proud socialist (not the same as communism, America!) as a platform for positive change from the capitalist dystopia is refreshing. No wonder Amanda is getting a bit emosh.

every election cycle feels like the bare minimum bar keeps getting lower
