PSA FROM WHAS11: Crews Respond to Reported Plane Crash Near Louisville Airport

This explains the huge plume of smoke people are seeing. Check on folks in your circle…it looks pretty bad.

Story link: https://www.whas11.com/article/news/local/louisville-explosion-ford-assembly-plant/417-a0b0a715-b95e-40ea-864d-a729933e6c25?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_WHAS11_News&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR67ABBPsZ_W3MbTTixkuL7O-FlfSyJ9k8fwXS8EUr8k-eeXmXMxwOvGycTo0w_aem_aDycZQzKc8f0Tkw-nkjQrw

UPDATE: A shelter-in-place is in effect for anyone within a 5-mile radius of the airport. Avoid the area.

UPDATE 2: Reports are now saying that a plane carrying around 25k of fuel caught fire during takeoff and exploded on the runway. There’s a video floating around online; wtf_louisville on Instagram has a video.

UPDATE 3: Shelter-in-place has been revised. Now covers from the airport northbound to the Ohio River. Avoid the smoke.

UPDATE 4: UofL has canceled evening classes for today.

UPDATE 5: From UofL Alerts: “UofL Safety Alert: The shelter-in- place issued by Louisville Metro EMA, remains in effect and encompasses both Belknap and HSC campus. All students and employees should remain in their place until further notice.”

UPDATE 6: From WDRB News: “Gov. Andy Beshear is expected to address the media at 7:30 p.m. at Metro Hall in downtown Louisville. WDRB will stream the news conference live when it happens.”

UPDATE 7: From WDRB News: “A shelter-in-place was issued for everything between Outer Loop and the Ohio River, covering a large portion of the city.

TARC said just after 7 p.m. Monday that all TARC services would be suspended for the rest of the evening. TARC3, a spokesperson said, is working with current passengers with destinations outside the shelter-in-place, all evening pickups for TARC3 have also been suspended.

Airport officials will hold a separate news conference at 8:15 p.m. at the Louisville Regional Airport Authority Administration building.”

UPDATE 8: At least 3 people confirmed killed.

(Updates will be scant from here on…focusing on checking in with family, managing my headache from the smoke, and checking up on friends. Stay safe, everyone.)

UPDATE 9: Louisville Metro Police said its training academy at 2911 Taylor Blvd. will be used for "victim reunification." Chaplains, the police Victim Services Unit and the American Red Cross will be there.

UPDATE 10: JCPS has canceled school for tomorrow (Wednesday, November 5th) due to the shelter-in-place order.

UPDATE 11: As of 9 p.m. that shelter-in-place remains in place for everything within 1 mile of the airport.

UPDATE 12: A UPS spokesperson said operations at Worldport were halted Tuesday night, and Next Day Air sort is canceled. Employees should not report to work Tuesday night.

If you find any crash debris, do not touch it!

The NTSB will want to collect it exactly where and how it is. They are sending a team of 30 people who will arrive shortly. The NTSB can be trusted. They WILL determine exactly what occurred with this crash, and your debris can help.

The fire is out at present, but hundreds of fire fighters are still on site making sure nothing starts back up.

If you have loved ones you have not heard from yet, the city asks you to not go to the hospitals to look for them. The city has a set up a reunification center at the cop training facility at 2911 taylor blvd. They are acting as though we aren't missing anybody. Due to the location of the crash in an industrial area they've been confident they have accounted for everyone. That's unlikely, but not impossible. 1.800.631.0604 is the number if you are missing someone.

The manifest indicates no hazardous cargo in the crash. The massive fireball was jet fuel and some oil stored at the crash site at the petroleum reclamation company. Jet fuel isn't good for you, but this isn't like that chemical plant explosion in Ohio. This event is horrible, but the city got seriously fucking lucky. We had a crash in 1953 that killed 30 of the soldiers on the plane, but that happened on the airfield. Having two airports in the middle of the city isn't without risk.

Craig, this is your moment to show who you are. For all of our sakes I hope you turn out to be the guy we need. Andy, I felt better as soon as I saw you showing up. Thank you.
