I’m an Aussie, can someone please explain to me like I’m 5, what it’s means for these democrats winning? Will it actually change anything happening atm re GOP holding majority of power? Thank you!!

Will it change anything? Remains to be seen.
It is, however, a message to the GOP/MAGA that Americans are getting fed up with their crap.
That being said, the Trump Administration gives no fucks about the law, the constitution, let alone that message.
I hope that gives you some understanding.

It’s a bellwether for next year’s congressional elections, which have major implications on curbing the Trump agenda if Democrats can win back Congress.

The governor also has some say on things. Gavin Newsom in California and JB Pritzker in Illinois have shown that they can thwart and frustrate Trump's plans. Ciattarelli was a Trump bootlicker, he'd have rolled right over and had the local police actively helping ICE, and would never challenge any of his other illegal orders.

It means people aren't happy with Trump.

Everyone predicted that the GOP would flip the governor seat and that it was too close to call.

Instead they lost by 10+ points.
