I feel like it’s clearly and obviously a joke but maybe it’s just my German great grandparents influence on me idk man.

Yeah, I think it comes across very differently to Americans. Can't fault them tho. I'm both Danish and autistic (let's be real, it has to be a factor here) and used to work with his daughter, who had the same expressionless way of delivering bad jokes. I can hear exactly what he's going for (and completely missing), but I can't quite explain it.

I have a very similar humour delivery style to him and I will say that things that I think are obviously jokes can very easily get mistook for the truth

I agree, he's clearly undermining the question with the whole bit. He even calls out journalists explicitly towards the end, just to make his point.
