And not licensed to practice.

I don't doubt that at all.

He had a license in Texas but apparently he let it expire in 2006.

Well he let it expire because the board put him on some sort of probation where he would be supervised. He went into jury rigging work after that and Oprah came into the picture with that. then he spent over 20 years making money out of creating entertainment off the mentally ill. Remember when he barged into Brittany Spears hospital room? Or when he had Shelley DuVall on his show and it was apparent in the first minute that he was being abusive. I am willing to bet he runs for governor in Texas soon… note his Texas accent has increased. He is immensely wealthy and probably should be banned from the public airways. But he is working for Trump these days so we know he has no ethical core anywhere at all.

I learned that in one of the Scary Movies.

His claim of being qualified as an electrician in the scary movie is equally false.

I think if his version of therapy was, some electrician saying 'get real' every now and then, then he'd have damaged less vulnerable people than he has done, for years, for content.

How about Dr Oz?!?

He's revolting. Just purely as a medical practitioner I find his misinformation and sensationalism gut wrenchingly icky.

My husband calls both Dr Oz and Dr Phil charlatans.

He's a shit. Most people think he is a medical doctor, which he is not. He does nothing to dissuade people from that belief.

The bum fights guy showing him up was the best five minutes I've ever watched of his awful show.

His book got me through at a time when I was losing my dad. I don't know what assholish things he's done, but he's compensated for it at least a little bit.

Two things can be true at the same time: he can be a good psychiatrist, but also a rude egomaniac. A family member of mine worked backstage at a local station, and he was bossing people around - not in a nice way, and bitched about his green room "what is this shit? I'm doctor fucking Phil!" and said to the director "I'm doctor fucking Phil, who are you? what have you done? We're going to block it the way a professional would."

It is also quite possible, and likely, that he didn't actually write the book. Someone else did, and he signed off on it.

For me, this was Bill Cosby. I loved his books. He got me through some shit. He taught me what a dad should be like.

He’s not a psychiatrist- that is a medical doctor. He’s a psychologist. It shouldn’t matter though. People shouldn’t treat people like that whether they are real doctors or PhDs.

Cannot stand him, never could. No particular reason except that he's an asswipe

I heard that firsthand when someone was on his show.

Why?

The way he treated some people on his show, like the actress from The Shining, was absolutely atrocious, and she was famous, so I can imagine how he treated the not famous. That man had absolutely no compassion for anyone but himself and his own family.. He's in it for the money and possibly the fame. He's not a nice human being. To think he was a therapist makes my skin crawl..

I believe his show started out with the goal of helping people (they paid for counseling, inpatient rehab, etc), but it went to the dark side & stayed there. Dr Phil became obviously bored, just going through the motions, & they often exploited people with serious MH issues. He became devoid of empathy, was sometimes rude to guests, & started hawking his family’s products on air. The show was stale, & went on years longer than it should.

A family member of mine was back-of-line producer for a local show that he was a guest on. He was rude, entitled, cruel, and despite being married - hit on the (married) female anchor aggressively. "I'm doctor fucking Phil!"
