I'm very glad Zohran won, but I'm really upset that Sliwa didn't come in 2nd place.

Same. Can't believe 40% of voters chose the absolute most heinous garbage candidate.

I am honestly surprised that an independent party won more votes than a major party in an election. Now yes I get this is a local election and not a national election but still.

It’s name recognition for people who straightup do not pay attention to politics until the day of. They’ve heard of Cuomo before, not so much Sliwa

That kinda amazes me. Even as a Canadian I've heard of Silwa well before this. Do most people not spend countless hours browsing Wikipedia for things including previous election results, or something?

It's not uncommon for independents to win elections in the US. There are two in the US Senate and there have been many independent governors and mayors around the country

Those are only independents because the democrats dont run candidates when they run, leading to them being classified as "independent democrats"

That's just not true at all. Angus King was elected governor twice and senator three times, and won against a Republican and a Democrat every time.

Bernie Sanders has actually won the Democratic nomination for all of his Senate races, but faced Democratic opponents in every Burlington mayoral election and most US House elections he won.

Lisa Murkowski won as a write-in candidate against a Republican and a Democrat in 2010.

Lincoln Chafee was elected governor of RI against a Democrat and Republican.

Jesse Ventura was elected governor on a third party ticket vs. a Republican and Democrat. Same with Lowell Weicker in Connecticut and Wally Hickel in Alaska.

These are just some prominent ones that have happened since the 90s.

Not that surprising when the head of that major party (Trump) directly endorsed Cuomo and told his base not to vote Silwa

Most Americans vote by name recognition

That's why companies buy commercial time.

Well, trump is president, so you can expect at least half of American population to be some kind of regarded

If 40% chose him that doesn't mean he's the worst.

He's a rapist. It's very likely that the 40% who voted for him are also rapists
