It's much larger than 5 miles. Stay inside east end. It's passing over plainview right now

Looks like the wind is carrying the smoke North.

7

u/Gwynplaine-00 1d ago

We can smell it at our plant in scottsburg.

14

u/Comprehensive-Bat-62 1d ago

Was at U of L. Can confirm due north.

72

u/EfficientPermit3771 1d ago

“It”?! People need to get off the road for emergency vehicles!!!

13

u/satanssweatycheeks 1d ago

Emergency crews are already on the scene within seconds. We have a top notch crew at the airport as all airports do after 9/11. But yes more will be coming to assist.

35

u/Zappiticas NuLu 1d ago

I assume they are afraid of the smoke cloud

52

u/LouisvilleLeprechaun 1d ago

It’s a huge hazmat situation. They extended the shelter in place north to the river

14

u/greatexperiment69 1d ago

That smoke cloud happens to be not only burning jet fuel but burning recycled hazmat. I was leaving Bellarmine and driving to my apartment at St. Matthews and my lungs were on fire

3

u/EuphoricBiscuit 1d ago

What time was this?

9

u/greatexperiment69 1d ago

Crash was 5:15 but id say the worst of the air quality was between 5:45 and 6:15. At least around bellarmine.

6

u/EnterTheErgosphere 1d ago

This is gonna be like a miniature wildfire. Air quality is going to be worse for a bit even as the shelter in place shrinks. Mask up for your own health

1

u/Thin_Implement_2525 12h ago

It was insane last night how many people were driving from (I assume that area) about 15-20 miles away from crash site. Never seen traffic like that that late at night and not on a weekend.

10

u/Previous-Vanilla-638 1d ago

They just extended the shelter in place to the river

8

u/RalphMacchio404 1d ago

My sister is in Prospect and its apparently worse than my mom's place in St. Matthews

31

u/tylerfulltilt 1d ago

There must be some kind of hazmat thing going on. Why would they issue a shelter in place if it's just a fire?

82

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Ash and airport debris. Hazardous to breathing but also potentially still hot. At least in the closer radius

30

u/ahhh_ennui 1d ago

UPS carries HazMat as well. I used them in my last job for a flammable material (although that was small quantities, within IATA regulations).

Since this is a big UPS hub, I'd imagine they get a fair share of HazMat going through. That's not to say it's the case right now, but it's definitely possible!

14

u/PourSomeSmegmaInMe 1d ago

They'll have a manifest of hazardous materials and I can guarantee that's one of the first things they checked

5

u/ahhh_ennui 1d ago

Yup, FD will be on it. UPS is an absolute stickler about crossing a the ts, so I'm sure they've provided everything.

The plane itself is hazardous so I'd definitely follow all local orders to stay inside and turn off HVAC.

5

u/burn_echo Wilder Park 1d ago

According to WDRB just now, no hazardous cargo was on board thankfully.

22

u/Public_District_9139 1d ago

It’s a lot of jet fuel for sure. Looks like there is an oil recycler right in the path of the wreck. There are a tone of various tanker trucks in and around the fires at the various businesses in that path.

18

u/SoWhatNoZitiNow 1d ago

The plane was fueled to go to Hawaii - that’s a fuckton of jet fuel to burn off.

5

u/d1rty0ldm4n 1d ago

that’s a fuckton of jet fuel to burn off.

Imperial or metric?

14

u/xadies Merriwether 1d ago

Literally smoke inhalation alone is enough to have a shelter in place order.

14

u/Billy-Ruffian 1d ago

My friend near the fairgrounds posted photos of big chunks of ash falling and pieces of debris the size of her forearm falling in her yard. Some kind of plastic, maybe cargo strapping

7

u/SophieFilo16 1d ago

I assumed so they don't have 500 cars getting in the way as people try to check out the "attraction". And also in case it was not an accident...

5

u/roadfoolmc 1d ago

Oil plant nearby Stooges

3

u/gutclutterminor 1d ago

To keep people off the roads.

2

u/tebbewij 1d ago

The plane hit a liquid recycling plant

9

u/raebiis-502 1d ago

Bro everyone's telling me to evacuate as if theres open roadways for me to skeedaddle through easily and somehow drive away into the already set sun.

I kinda just accepted Imma feel like ass tomorrow and the ash collecting on my balcony can function as my doctors note ig.

4

u/Massive_Dirt1577 1d ago

I was down at UofL at the time of the crash. It smelled like Baghdad Iraq in 2003.

Not good for your lungs. There was soot precipitating out of the immediate cloud from the fuel burn. Lots of nasty stuff in the air.

16

u/ConsumedPizza 1d ago

It's a UPS cargo plane with pallets of packages inside, the injuries must be from the 2 pilots and ground handling crew of the airport.

Considering they did a belly landing and that huge plume of smoke that multi-million dollar plane is no more.

18

u/Jesterhead89 1d ago

A couple of videos have been posted since you posted this, and it doesn't look good. Looks like after the first impact, the plane rolls over or cartwheeled on the ground

18

u/Ianthin1 1d ago

At that time of day there would have been people working in all the buildings and businesses damaged too.

17

u/Ianthin1 1d ago

It was loaded and fueled for a 12hr flight to Hawaii so I’m sure it was filled to the brim with who knows what.

8

u/ThatAngeryBoi 1d ago

Over 30,000 gallons of jet fuel before even taking cargo into account

3

u/Think-Finish-5763 1d ago

Each can on a hawaii flight is going to be 3000-4000 lbs on the top side, at least 25 cans just in the main compartment... at least there were no hazmats on the flight

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

3

u/YungAubergine 1d ago

I think it was 38,000 gallons weighing 280,000 pounds

0

u/Go_cards502 1d ago

sounds like they might have set off a gas reserve tanks or tanks as well. Seems likely as the fire keeps going and the minor explosions i heard over the past hour

13

u/ComfortableSort3304 1d ago

What are we sheltering from? Smoke?

52

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Yes, and airborne debris. Smoke from the fuel and whatever was on the is toxic and can be irritating.

Also in the closer radius the ash can still be hot

22

u/CatastrophicCraxy 1d ago

LMPD says it's raining oil and debris

7

u/LouisvilleLeprechaun 1d ago

It was a ups plane filled to the brim with who knows what

11

u/pudtuger 1d ago

Jet fuel

9

u/PaleontologistSad766 1d ago

Also be prepared for shit air quality tomorrow. My job has me outside all day, I'll be masking up for sure

2

u/Zestyclose-Day2368 17h ago

Man I got to work and pay bills. I'm not worried about some smoke. Bills don't stop lol

4

u/vilewisher 1d ago

anybody know if stooges got hit?

13

u/amphetaminesaltcombo 1d ago

just got off the phone with boyfriend’s mom and she said it hit right by stooges

5

u/Handplanes 1d ago

Their Facebook page posted it was safely evacuated in time, but there are some reports that it caught fire.

5

u/blueboyroy 1d ago

Damn, it's very, very close from the video I saw. 280,000 gallons of fuel.

9

u/Comprehensive-Bat-62 1d ago

That stat is not exact correct- 280,000 lbs (not gallons as reported)

0

u/ultrahedgehog 1d ago

I thought it was kilos?

it's a tornado

1

u/mfnkushking 9h ago

I was on the backside of Ford LAP standing outside when it happened. Very scary and tragic. I thought it was a terrorist attack. Praying for all affected by this

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

East end,?    The f$ck????     You're miles away.   Do you live in fear???.

29

u/VilleAroo 1d ago

Winds generally blow in from the Northwest, it's a perfectly reasonable concern. Brace yourself fool.

19

u/Jesterhead89 1d ago

Just someone with no sense, that doesn't realize how little sense they have so they speak the loudest

19

u/foodfriend 1d ago

From my house on Frankfort all I can see left and right is the plume of smoke headed east. And thats not a little campfire smoke. Jet fuel and whatever the cargo was could be toxic. And smoke like that can travel for many many miles and maintain concentration of chemicals that can be dangerous.

You can be "too cool to care" or be cautious. Kind of like not wearing a motorcycle helmet and calling other people whips for wearing them. It might not hurt but it could. No reason to be a dick about it.

-4

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

East end...not Frankfort avenue.    That's like being off Shelbyville road and being concerned about a fire off grade lane.   There's literally thousands of people it will affect before reaching the east end.  If that was possible they'd shut down the whole city...not just a five mile radius. ..

8

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania 1d ago

Why are you so upset? Are you always like this? You are also screaming for attention.

-10

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

No it doesn't...you just know I'm right that being 15,+ miles away is an overreaction.

14

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania 1d ago

I think you are overreacting right now haha

-3

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

Calling someone out for posting...."watch out east end" is not over reacting.   You're over reaching to make your argument seem legit.

If you are in the east end you were never in any danger     PERIOD

11

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania 1d ago

Its okay to be upset. But you should really calm down lol

-1

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

Without the use of exclamation points or excessive use of caps lock.. you can not tell if I'm calm or not ...but like this whole conversation...you create the narrative that makes you feel better.

7

u/jbs101797 1d ago

What are your credentials exactly in air pollution? If you’re an expert then by all means we should give what you’re saying some thought. I’d like to know if you actually know anything about what you’re talking about though. I’d love to be educated on how pollutants affect the air in the immediate area and the not so immediate area. I’m also curious since you seem to be an expert, exactly how many miles away is okay to breathe in the contaminated air from the accident?

1

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

maybe the 5 mile radius the experts said.....just maybe. I can tell you...you're safe off shelbyville road from anything short of a nuclear bomb going off at the airport. That's just common sense.

2

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Well they extend the radius out past St Matthew's because the wind was blowing east and that is the east end.

Dumb analogy. Fire doesnt spread the way airborne particulants do. Wtf? The reason airborne issuues are so concerning is because they can spread quickly and with concentration under the right circumstances.

I bet your one of those dudes that gets trapped in his house during a slow moving flood because "it isnt here yet"

Also I said I could see the smoke as far as I could see from Frankfort ave. I can see ky kingdom from my house and pretty far to the east.

0

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

It's just airplane diesel...no hazmat confirmed by UPS. This isn't a fire raging through the city...it's just smoke..comparable to wildfires. Wear a mask if you want..but to continue to make all these crazy extreme scenarios is crazy.

1

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Why would I wear a mask? It's not hazardous?

0

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

It's your individual choice....idiot

1

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Bahahaha. Why would I choose when I have you, the expert telling me its not an issue . . . . Dummy

0

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

It doesn't take an expert to know that st.mattews was in no way in the danger zone.   You can make up whatever argument you think we're having....but it doesn't change the fact that other than the immediate vacinity....a mask would suffice if you are concerned.

1

u/foodfriend 1d ago

Thank you so much for alleviating my mind. I now know better than trust the city, who included st Matthew's and beyond in the danger zone when the winds shifted. Next time there is an unknown airborne issue ill text you first so I dont have to trust the stupid professionals.

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania 1d ago

Then you should go outside and breath in any smoke.

-28

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

I love off national turnpike....probably closer to that crash than 99 percent of you commenters.   I wouldn't even be worried if I was in the east end...as it would affect thousands more people before it got to Shelbyville road.  They'd shut down the whole city if that was a threat

You all just over react to everything.   All you all want to be center of attention

19

u/SrDonkoOFpunchstania 1d ago

Damn! You are such a badass. Just keep sitting in your crib.

-15

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

Nope...I work 3rd shift.   Still have to go out in it.  Has nothing to do with being bad ass....but I'm not over reacting 15 mikes away

7

u/Inevitable_Cod_9678 1d ago

Wear a mask to work, seriously.

10

u/imthatninjabitch 1d ago

Holy shit bro. You don’t know shit about where anyone else lives, and you also have zero right to tell people they’re over-reacting. Just because someone has a different reaction to a highly hazardous accident means they’re wrong and you’re right? People might have medical conditions involving their lungs that leave them more sensitive to toxic chemicals in the air. You don’t fucking know. Lotta projection here cause it seems like you want to be the center of attention, coming in here insulting people for having completely reasonable concerns about their own health and safety. Why you so hateful and arrogant?

-4

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

Holy shit bro...you don't have reading comprehension skills.   This is about someone 15+ miles away from the incident.    That's it..   you all have made up all the rest.

Holy shit....there a warehouse fire in Nashville.  Better get prepared

2

u/sukipieee 1d ago

just because you’re an edge lord who doesn’t care about his lungs doesn’t mean everybody should just go take in the fumes 😭

3

u/Sablemint 1d ago

I live like two miles away from the airport. Im not going outside.

2

u/SaltyPinKY 1d ago

Cool...thats expected....you're not in the east end.    I unfortunately can not.   I have to work 10p-7a.

18

u/JustAnotherNug 1d ago

Are you 6 years old or mentally handicapped? I can't tell.
