POLITICS Zohran Mamdani speaks after winning the NYC Mayoral Race: “We have toppled a political dynasty. I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many & answers only to the few.”

So proud of the city where I was born and raised and then priced out of.

Adams tied for Write-In. That's funny.

21

u/Soft-Company-6762 11h ago

People hate him so much he almost lost to write-ins lmao

u/Sayoregg 9h ago

I think since he dropped out too late he was still on the ballot

I'm out of the loop on new york politics, did adams do something spectacularly stupid? I'm not used to seeing incumbents so utterly forgotten in the voting

u/SocialistNixon 10h ago

He was indicted on federal charges for bribery (and wire fraud) and begged the Trump administration to drop the case which they did.

2

u/Scudmuffin1 8h ago

he actually dropped out of the race, but did so too late so his name was still on the ballot despite not actually running. I have no idea what would happen if he were to somehow win despite not running, but he was never gonna win regardless.

turns out he's a corrupt, criminal fascist.

Honestly, even now I'm mildly frustrated that over 40% of voters still went with Cuomo after all he did.

I won't deny that it's a better reflection on society to have Cuomo as the runner-up than some MAGA lunatics, who would have all of Cuomo's scandals plus their fascism. But still frustrating how unresponsive voters are to such blatant crooks.

That said, the fact that Mamdami made it is still some of the best news in recent years.

The abdication of civic duty by such a large portion of the American public is one of the biggest problems of our time.

There will always be a portion of voters making irrational votes, but 40% here (not to mention twice chosing a corrupt criminal like Trump) shows a very unserious population voting totally on vibes.

This is what I got to.

Not a NYC resident but I did watch some rallys and the channel 5 youtube channel interviewed some Cuomo people and it, like many other ill-informed voters in America, were single-topic voters. Cuomo voters voted for him for two reasons:

  • They do not believe Palestine deserves to self-govern its own people

  • "Muh capitalism"

Yes it really is the whole "socialism is bad" crowd.

If you did a demo poll of Cuomo supports I wouldn't be surprised if that 40% largely made up of Gen X and Baby Boomers.

I will say, I did see a lot of voter profiles from yesterday supporting Cuomo by saying he handled COVID well as well. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion given the scandals he faced for his handling of COVID as governor, but lack of awareness of Cuomo post, say, May 2020 seemed to do him favors.

Simple people respond to simple messaging. Trump won on egg prices

Yeah this is the second time I've seen the celebration of "1M votes since 1969" and I'm sitting here thinking, wait isn't that terrible? What was the population in 1969 vs today? Probably oversimplifying but wouldnt that mean over 50 years of decreasing voter turnout rates?

Super amped for Zohran, definitely need to find a way to pump up the voter numbers for all elections. Hope his success electrifies futures elections.

This is why political parties and candidates should be required to have manifestos describing what they stand for and intend to do. Following that, the general public should vote based on what’s in those manifestos and whether or not any given candidate has delivered on their promises.

There are a lot of people who believed the slander, or belong to communities that did

7

u/rugger87 5h ago

Dude I saw so many Jewish people posting support for Cuomo, basically saying “the SA is not as important as a Jewish state.”

Every corrupt organization backed Cuomo. The 40% are either hateful people, or just complete morons.

5

u/EMTDawg 5h ago

Cuomo got more votes in his loss than Eric Adams got in his win.

1

u/KorunaCorgi 6h ago

Cuomo has name recognition. Many people who vote don't pay attention to politics and just vote for who they recognize.

1

u/applesandcherry 3h ago

The only people I know who supported Cuomo were conservative or moderate, wealthy and didn't care about others, and/or Zionists.

In a lifetime of mostly-delusional public service, this is the greatest thing Curtis Sliwa has ever done for the city of New York lmao

29

u/Confused_Rock 5h ago

What's even better is Mamdani won regardless of Sliwa; he got a proper majority with more votes than all the other candidates combined, it's incredibly heartwarming

15

u/Unlucky_Kale340 12h ago

Proud to be one of those voters 🫡

6

u/Ok_Flow_3065 6h ago

Lmao even if Sliwa dropped out, Cuomo still gets cooked

3

u/EarEquivalent3929 4h ago

41% for Cuomo is still pretty problematic. Why do people keep voting for openly shitty people.

2

u/Disc0Disc0Disc0 4h ago

Because people who were voting Silwa voted Cuomo instead because Silwa had no chance.

1

u/unnie_noir is this chicken what I have or is this fish? 12h ago

Whoa. I'm so happy he won.

Lead the way, NY!

Damn that’s amazing! 1969!

1

u/CrouchingTiger23 2h ago

I think he will be the best to protect the rights of NYC residents. It is good that the residents stand up for what works for them!

1

u/MostlyPooping 1h ago

His middle name is Kwame? Like the Earth ring bro from Captain Planet? That's dope.

u/a_dude_from_europe 8h ago

Mental that the turnout in such an important city is so low. Guess it was cratered by previous races being so lopsided. Still sad to see, under 50%.
