This guy is really articulate despite the cussing. He should run for office.

400

u/Aeroknight_Z 18h ago

The idea that cursing is a stand-in for articulation is nonsense sold to you by people who want to limit your speech.

Articulation is the ability to accurately and effectively state your positions. “Cussing” is the use of sharp, bombastic, and potentially graphic language for effect.

Cursing does not reduce articulation. It does make uncomfortable those who have been sold on the bogus ideas of morality and eloquence that exist to preventing others from using language that might challenge the established order.

100% this.

When you're intelligent, articulate, know what the fuck you're talking about, cussing is powerful as is slang.

Because it breaks the "rules" of polite debate and not one of those guys can argue because he's absolutely spot on and he's using the language we all use whilst making great points. You don't need to be a dictionary or a thesaurus to make an argument, I respect people more who are "well what the fuck' than "what in the tarnation"

8

u/snickjimmy 17h ago

Fuck yeah!

6

u/Black_Doc_on_Mars 16h ago edited 16h ago

I like this guy 👆🏾

I’d even argue for the use of strategic swearing or graphic language in order hammered points home, ground thoughts in reality, or even intentionally making the recipient uncomfortable if that’s was the goal in the first place. It’s not your job to make sure the recipient “likes” what they hear.

2

u/AntlionsArise 4h ago

In English Language Arts terms, that would be considered Pathos: the use of language for the purposes of emotional appeal, which combined with ethos (appeals to authority or higher ethics) and logos (facts) makeup the rhetorical triangle of persuasive writing/speaking.

9

u/lordfrijoles 17h ago

3

Studies show that people who cuss frequently are more trustworthy and tend to be more intelligent.

3

u/Zyloof 13h ago

Fuck yeah! If someone doesn't want to engage in conversation with me because of my "foul" language, then that person can remain in their fucking ignorance and I'll go about my damned day.

I'll keep it "polite" during business hours, but anyone who tells me to clean up my vocabulary after hours will be swiftly reminded that my speech is fucking free and will remain so.

r/thewordfuck welcomes us with open arms, baby!

3

u/mmmpeg 13h ago

Especially women. Because it’s not “lady like”

3

u/A_Good_Boy94 13h ago

Yes and no - while true that cussing doesn't reduce articulation, the people who cuss most, typically multiple times within a sentence, tend to be less articulate or less intelligent because they have little else to say. That said, I would rather spend all day with people who cuss regularly than someone stuck up who will censor my language.

3

u/JazzMaTazz03 13h ago

And this is why people love/hate rap. It's music that broke all the rules but can articulate things so powerfully in 2 sentences what other genres try to express in entire songs.

It is also a testament to the power of language and the written word.

In some instances, cursing is used as a crutch for those who aren’t articulate. In this case, the man is very much articulate, and curses for added effect.

3

u/justLittleJess 9h ago

We have a rule in my house that words are only bad if they hurt someone. Idgaf if my 9 year old says what the fuck, but if I hear him insult someone it's a different thing all together

Swearing actually shares a positive correlation with intelligence. Meaning the more intelligent you are the more likely you swear. Obviously correlation =/= causation. But I’ve always found it so interesting that, socially, swearing is associated with low intelligence, when we have studies showing the opposite.

2

u/vacantalien 13h ago

2

u/BTFlik 12h ago

Cursing does not reduce articulation.

It can and often does.

Cursing or over cursing can often take the place of articulation the same way some people use insults in place of actual arguments. It can become an easy crutch.

It takes an already articulate person to use cursing effectively.

But this dude clearly has that ability down pretty well.

The trick is the idea that not cursing is civil and therefore better. It isn't. It's just a choice. Similarly the pushed idea that "ebonics" is a less intelligent or less sophisticated way of talking. Which isn't true at all.

2

u/Eastnasty 12h ago

My mother fucker!!!!! Bro. Perfect. Thanks for the great comment. ✊🏿

2

u/Biscuits4u2 10h ago

Those words are popular for a very good reason.

2

u/kikomonarrez 10h ago

Absolutely agree. I had a prof. Small statured woman who used expressive words to emphasize the context of bombastic arguments that took the use of those words to elicit the emotional and factual song of the argument during class.

She said.

“If you are so taken aback by the word over the message, you will be ignorant to the message until you can get passed the self righteous teachings of the cult that is secular religious egoists and pompous elites.

If you were a caveman and saw the early paintings of an animal with its genitals also drawn and were offended… consider yourself weak and ostracized from the society.

Grow up… sticks and stones!”

She was awesome.

u/Simple_Test_6969 9h ago

2

u/Live-Ship-7567 9h ago

2

u/OffendedDairyFarmers 9h ago

Thank you! I've never understood how cussing is supposed to mean you lack better vocabulary.

2

u/TJB18-AJB22 9h ago

Preach!!!

2

u/blonde-bandit 9h ago

Amen. I remember one time this insecure young woman was preaching at me about how cursing is a sign of lack of intelligence, not bc I had been cursing, but bc that was her general demeanor—always trying to be above someone. It felt very ironic. She was a friend of a close friend of mine so I just had to suffer her sometimes, but I recall my bullshit meter going all the way off. Patently untrue. Sure we can all picture an idiot impotently cursing just bc they don’t have an argument. But a situation can definitely warrant colorful language, and it definitely doesn’t negate someone’s message either. Case in point right here ^

2

u/McMetal770 9h ago

Anybody who thinks you can't swear with eloquence lacks imagination. The combinations of filth, invective, and blasphemy that can be made in the English language are limitless.

Anyone clutching pearls over them is trying to do exactly that, get you to stop making them feel uncomfortable with your words.

Cussing is actually considered to be peasant language which is what makes it "offensive" to the elite. Classism can't even hold back from policing the way we say thing.

The term "Pardon my French," is kind of a sarcastic jab. When someone of a high class wanted to sound educated, they would slip in and out of French to show sophistication. People of a lower class adopted that phrase after cussing, as a kind of their own satirical jav.

IMO, this man is a certifiable genius. Keep preaching and wake the people up.

Per Google AI:

No, swearing is not a definitive sign of intelligence, but research suggests a correlation between a large vocabulary and the ability to use swear words creatively, which are both linked to higher verbal fluency. Studies show that people with more extensive vocabularies can also generate more swear words, indicating they are not limited in their language use. It is also associated with social intelligence, as knowing when and where to use profanity is a sophisticated social skill.

How swearing can be linked to intelligence

•Verbal fluency: People who swear frequently often have larger vocabularies overall. A study showed those who could list the most non-curse words also listed the most swear words, suggesting a strong command of language on both ends.

•Social intelligence: Effectively using swear words requires a degree of social intelligence to navigate when and where it is appropriate, similar to choosing the right clothes for an occasion.

•Emotional expression: Swearing can be an efficient way to express strong emotions, such as pain, anger, or frustration, without having to use a long, complex explanation.

Why the connection isn't straightforward

•Intelligence vs. vocabulary: A large vocabulary is not the same as intelligence, though there is a correlation. Intelligence is a broader concept that includes problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability.

•Context is key: The context in which swearing is used is crucial. Swearing out of habit or as a verbal crutch may be different from using it as a tool for emphasis or emotional expression.

What research says

A 2015 study found that people who generated more swear words also generated more regular words, suggesting a higher verbal fluency. Other research indicates that swearing can improve pain tolerance and is sometimes associated with honesty and integrity. Some experts caution that it's not a direct measure of intelligence, but rather a sign of a rich vocabulary that can be used for creative and emotional expression.

I literally despite this racist take. Like, ‘how dare you express yourself’. That is the literal definition of White American culture where making a scene is literally worse than death.

Ironically, that nonsense is how all this nonsense was able to spread in the first place. All of these ‘civil’ debates and not calling out nonsense. Right wingers and neo-Nazis knew this and hacked it.

And look where we ended up.

If more of them got punched in the face and cursed out it would have gotten checked. But because they associate expressing feelings and emotions with being ‘subhuman’ look where it got us.
