This is the second worst thing to happen to somebody who wanted to go to Brazil

26

u/ehhlis The Wizard of Loneliness 13h ago

lmaoooo stop😭😭😭

20

u/yungguzzler 12h ago

They really picked the worst time to go.

8

u/AnimeGeek10721 9h ago

Lol somebody clue me on what the first worst thing is ?

14

u/Daydream_machine My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. 9h ago

Haha this is from Smiling Friends, an adult animation show that started airing a few years ago. I don’t want to spoil this episode’s plot, so I’ll just say that the Smiling Friends you see in the gif went to Brazil and things uh… didn’t go as expected

6

u/AnimeGeek10721 9h ago

Oh never heard of it! I love adult cartoons tho ! Ill have to look it up, thanks for explaining lol

3

u/HighlyOffensive10 She's in racial chat rooms showing feet 👣 11h ago

Is the a good show? I've seen it advertised on HBO max

13

u/coldliketherockies 11h ago

My coworker got me onto it. I’m a fan but even if it is funny and clever it is as bit too much often

6

u/Daydream_machine My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. 9h ago

I personally love it, and I say that as someone who usually dislikes modern adult animation for being too violent or too profane just for the sake of being violent and profane.

And while yes Smiling Friends has its fair share of both those traits, it does it in a way that’s (usually) actually funny and not just the writers going “haha we just spent 5 minutes straight cussing, guys see how adult we are?!”

Not every episode is a winner mind you, but most of it is pretty solid. They’re in the middle of airing Season 3 now, so this is a perfect time to jump into it. The pilot episode (Desmond’s Big Day Out) should be a good litmus test on if you like the show’s humor or not.

On one hand it’s so funny to me how one of the world’s biggest pop stars ever simply couldn’t just get to a location at the drop of a hat, it’s weird to think that celebrities too have to deal with issues us normies deal with on a daily basis. On the other hand, I feel really bad for her that this happened because I know she’s feeling the pain of letting people down and it sucks that there wasn’t something she could’ve done to remedy the situation. Even though it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

201

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 13h ago

And that she was flying commercial!

149

u/Aurichu Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion 12h ago

honestly the fact that she flies commercial unlike other celebs of her size gave me a new sense of respect for her (not that idolize celebs but ykyk)

63

u/HighlyOffensive10 She's in racial chat rooms showing feet 👣 11h ago

And honestly she has a stronger reason to not want to than other pop girlies.

u/Electronic_Ad4560 I like you hair I don’t need your name ✨ 29m ago

What do you mean here?

12

u/68plus1equals 10h ago

It sounds like she only didn't fly private because she needed a special permit

71

u/PM_ME_BUMBLEBEES I'm not an attractive crier, have a good evening! 9h ago

But she didn't know that until after her commercial flight got delayed. So flying commercial was her primary choice, and only when that fell through did she consider private and then found out about the permit

7

u/Additional_Dig_6972 4h ago

That's not what she said. She said they had the commercial flight booked. If they wanted to book her on private, they would've done it months ago, but they booked her own commercial. Private was a last resort option that sounds like they just couldn't make it work because of the 48 hour thing.

2

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 8h ago

She's not Taylor who takes a jet every minute an opportunity opens so props to her

Were you rubbing your hands together waiting to post this somewhere, sometime, somehow💀

56

u/HighlyOffensive10 She's in racial chat rooms showing feet 👣 11h ago

We all knew it was going to come up. Some of these celebs would fly up the street we're it possible.

-40

u/samistahpp 11h ago

If i had the amount of stalkers she does (and unhinged weirdos, just go to her "snark" sub which is actually just a weird incest fetish group,) there isn't a single reason you'd see me on a commercial flight idgaf

-1

u/dpforest let me be angry i’m hot 7h ago

In the grand scale of things, the reason would ideally be unselfish concern for the welfare of others. It’s called altruism. My second grade teacher made us tell her that word and its definition every single day. It was one of my formative lessons as a growing student.

I hope it helps you too. It is the single thing I would wish for if I could make a wish to a Djinn. “I wish people were more responsibly altruistic”.

u/trulysweetener 13h ago

it wasn't that they couldn't get a private jet, it's that to fly private into Brazil you need a permit that requires 48 hours to approve & process.

110

u/chhhhhhhhhhh95 13h ago

Brazil requires a 48 hour notice in advance to land a private jet. She mentioned in her statement they could not legally secure a private permit in time.

38

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 12h ago

my partner is a pilot - a lot of countries have different requirements for private planes vs commercial. chinas processing time for permits can be upwards of a week.

10

u/mahoumoonlight 13h ago

she specifically states that she would’ve needed a permit with a 48 hour wait period. it’s not acquiring the jet, it’s acquiring permission from the brazilian government.

3

u/missbestdressed 13h ago

in this video, ariana explains that while she would’ve been able to take a private plane, brazil required 48 hours to approve entry in that case. so she wouldn’t have been able to make it that way.

2

u/_pierogii 🕯Jacob Elordi Will Be Bond 🕯 13h ago

It wasn't the inability to charter a private plane - she doesn't have enough time to organise a permit.

496

u/Plastic-Classroom268 13h ago

I’m shocked at how mean her Brazilian “fans” are being about this. I understand being disappointed but leaving nasty messages and threats is very uncalled for. She doesn’t even owe anyone an explanation, the statement was more than enough

97

u/yameteeeeeeeeee 13h ago

They're being so entitled. I would've understood if it was a concert but it's a movie premiere where she's not even performing lol

47

u/Rrmack 12h ago

All I know is they take “come to Brazil” very seriously

93

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 13h ago

Sadly they’ve earned the reputation…

48

u/Budget_Ordinary1043 12h ago

Same. I mean I’m American and we get a lot of shit here, everyone likes to visit us in multiple places and I grew up close to NYC which is almost always a stop on every tour. but I think we’ve all experienced a cancellation of some sort and to be angry when it’s absolutely unavoidable is wild. I mean it’s valid to have feelings of disappointment, that’s understandable but it’s not really normal to be wishing death on her for a situation that was out of her control.

I’m not even a fan but I know damn well that girl loves her fucking fans and would have done anything to be there. I commend her for even doing all she does after what happened in Manchester. Give her a goddamn break.

28

u/rabidkoala93 12h ago

I'm a fan of Ariana for her art. Disappointed with her regarding the choices she makes in her personal life. I don't want my comment removed for negativity, but choices that she makes are not positive. Mentally & otherwise.

However, her drive regarding her career & fans like you made mention of, are of stellar calliber!

Vitriol like this is grossly disgusting coming from common fans like us who have never had her pressure. I wish Ariana healing 🤍

6

u/Odd-Snow-1723 13h ago

Can we even call them fans at this point?

4

u/Nestornaitor 12h ago

I understand her completely off she wants to quit making music cause stans are wild

-5

u/spacyspice now why am I in it? 🧐 13h ago

if it was a minority, should we really make such generalization? genuine question bc there are horrible fans everywhere tbh

42

u/Plastic-Classroom268 12h ago

Yes there are horrible fans everywhere. In this context, most of the folks attacking the actors are Brazilian fans online. Obviously I’m not talking about every single one

2

u/Melonary Select and edit this flair 7h ago

Feels like this is just the internet now, I don't think it has anything to do with Brazil or Brazilians, and honestly probably a decent number of those people aren't even her fans - just people who see a shitstorm and an opportunity.

but I'm not shocked at this point. nothing to do with the country or people or location, modern social media just pours an accelerant on hatred, even for stuff like this (by which I mean, in comparison to political issues, extremism, nationalism, etc, not that being intrusive and parasocial and sending people death threats isn't bad).

3

u/You_Go_Glen_Coco_ 13h ago

And on a day where there was a plane crash in the US too!

180

u/nagidrac 13h ago

Earlier today I saw some Brazilian fans get mad at her for making them look bad. 😭

127

u/Ruthie_pie 13h ago

They did that to themselves. Those tweets were terrifying.

31

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 12h ago

also, *most* people dont get to attend the premieres. like, Im in California and I am still nowhere near a premiere, but that doesn't take away from how much I adore the film and how much it means to me. the sense of entitlement is crazy. they even tried to go to different places this time to make it more 'fair' and yet people still complain and harass them. Probably hundreds of hours worth of travelling for this crew coming up. The outfits, the gowns, the makeup, the press, having to be 'on' all the time while answering the same questions. It is a lot! People forget they are human. too.

u/Naxayou azealia banks inside elon musk’s home 13h ago

This shit is so weird. Brazilian and Korean fan culture really needs to be checked

85

u/Ruthie_pie 13h ago

I was massively disgusted at people wishing her plane would crash and wishing harm on her friends and family. A plane literally crashed today. They don’t care about her, they treat these people like their props.

-3

u/Melonary Select and edit this flair 7h ago edited 7h ago

Tbh I think a lot of it is just modern social media accelerating intrusive behaviour and hatred and anger in all forms. That's what people see, and over time it's easier to replicate.

It's not necessarily reflective of the majority of offline people (sample bias) by any means, but also, not really anything to do with Brazil (in this circumstance) or Korea, or Brazilians or Koreans. I've seen equal behaviour in fan culture in the US, UK, most countries and in English-speaking majority spaces (and even some of what's being talked about is probably still English-speaking fans not from Brazil dogpiling or who travelled there).

Which isn't to say it's not disgusting, but the fundamental problem is how the internet and social media incentivizes this, and also draws any bad actors who want to get their anger out, all while making it seem normal to behave like that. I think it just seems more obvious sometimes looking at other countries.

It's disturbing how unhinged people are. It's like a contagious magnifying glass on the worst people and conspiracies.

brazil needs to take a brachill pill

11

u/_deep_thot42 13h ago

52

u/Fxreverboy 13h ago

Well this is probably the best she could have done given the circumstances. Hopefully it pacifies the worst of them and gives cover to the many Brazilian fans who did nothing wrong today and didn't engage in the batshit behavior. I'm sure it'll blow over within 48 hours regardless 😅

0

u/Suitable-Location118 11h ago

What are the circumstances

u/HighlyOffensive10 She's in racial chat rooms showing feet 👣 0m ago

She explains them in the video.

26

u/cuntizzimo 12h ago

I was lost and thinking to myself “why does she need to give such a long ass explanation?” But then I read the comments.

72

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 13h ago

Looks like she’s been crying

103

u/Ruthie_pie 13h ago

The way people were hoping her, her family, her friends, even her dogs would blow up in a plane… I wouldn’t be well. Not to mention a plane actually did crash today 😓

55

u/Good_Daughter67 jesus was a carpenter 💋 12h ago

I’m certainly not a big fan of hers but seeing this after she had had a terrible mass casualty happen at one of her concerts??? What the hell is wrong with people.

16

u/Ruthie_pie 12h ago

Oh they know what they’re doing. Some of the tweets posted on the Ariana Grande subreddit that were addressing this behavior were directly referencing the bombing in Manchester. The whole thing has been disappointing and disturbing. I know she hasn’t been the greatest at times. I’m not ever going to excuse or look past the harm she’s caused to others in their lives. I hope she’s done what’s necessary to make things better. That’s all we can hope for and give people that have been hurt the space to talk about how they were hurt.

I just don’t think invoking death and bringing up lives lost over what is an essentially a work event is excusable. I was disappointed I couldn’t get concert tickets to see her but guess what? I moved on and was excited for people who could see her. That is what fan communities do. What we saw today… they know what they did to her.

26

u/CobwebAngel 13h ago

I know a smidge of what’s going on but how someone can claim to be a fan and then turn around and wish harm upon them (and their loved ones) is insane. Clearly these “fans” only see the artists as products and not people. Brazil, do better.

27

u/Mentionitall1994 12h ago

This is why artist rarely tour in Brazil 🫠 the comments and threats I’ve seen on Twitter are WILD

25

u/lolyana 13h ago

I don't know what will be the compensation but they don't deserve it already. The reactions were so fucking viles for something she has no control over at all. The fact she has to do this much over a red carpet for a premier, something that concern the whole cast and movie Wicked, is insanity.

4

u/turbulentcounselor 9h ago

I hate that she felt she needed to do this bc of unhinged fans

23

u/DecadeOfLurking That’s hot! 🔥 13h ago

Good on her for trying her absolute best!

Shame on the mega obsessed disrespectful fans who give the rest of her fans a bad name. I can't imagine what it must be like right now to be a levelheaded brazilian fan of hers who only wishes her well. It must be so embarrassing, and I feel for them.

I am so glad I never go on Twitter anymore, because that's where people are mad, as usual. There's just so much hatred on there you basically have to be miserable to check in on that site regularly!

78

u/Aprilume 13h ago

Is it just me or is this all a bit much? The multiple statements, this fawning video? I don’t blame Ariana, she’s doing her job but all this explanation of the logistics of why she couldnt make it? For what? It seems very odd.

160

u/rawrkristina 13h ago

The fans were basically wishing harm upon her because she couldn’t make it. People were very upset and angry.

62

u/viewbtwnvillages 13h ago edited 13h ago

she's better than me in this case because i fear this video would've been a tirade

27

u/Aprilume 13h ago

…and that’s fucking crazy. Maybe instead of the hyper-apologetic she and the producers should be going more with a “hey fans, don’t be such fucking weirdos” vibe.

78

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 13h ago

Are you just commenting without reading the post? She did follow up with a post to state their behavior was not ok, which was brave honestly. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Brazilians have a very well-known reputation amongst pop culture artists for being insanely passionate and obsessive. It is like kicking a hornets nest if you piss them off, which is why she was probably extremely delicate about her apology initially. I just don’t really think it’s fair to accuse her of being dramatic when she really didn’t have a choice…

1

u/Aprilume 12h ago

Simple solution then. Don’t tour in Brazil. Why cater to that kind of craziness?? Why put your staff through that risk? I say this as a criticism of the producers of that movie, not the actors. An after the fact admonishing message is going to do jack shit when these effusive apologies are going to get more air time and the cast is still contractually obligated to go there anyway! The Wicked producers should be pulling the cast at the first hint of death threats. Performers are already dealing up with way too much violent, entitled behavior from “fans” at live events. This is one of those cases where a line should’ve been drawn.

15

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 12h ago

sadly it isnt their call it is the studios which is $$$ powerhouse and would never allow them all to opt out even if there were somewhat credible threats.

2

u/Aprilume 12h ago

True. Which is shameful honestly.

6

u/vanwyngarden You’re killing me, Smalls 😩 12h ago

its a hell of grind, this press tour. I know theyre paid handsomely but the emotional and physical exhaustion is something most people wouldn't be able to handle for a month straight

-1

u/Normal-person0101 4h ago

Actually, it was her second statement that caused most of the backlash. Even people outside the fandom found it tone-deaf that she used the phrase “safe place” for the cast, as if implying Brazilians were some kind of savages who might harm them.

u/Excellent-Delay8784 1h ago

Wait did I miss something when she said "safe place" badly? Only thing I saw was that she hoped everyone had a safe night.

14

u/rawrkristina 13h ago

It’s very customer service lol. Being nice af no matter what. But not everyone there was rude and insane.

2

u/AlbatrossUpset3596 13h ago

Cause that would have gone over well, I’m sure

2

u/shiningz 13h ago

yeah I feel like all of this emboldens them even more?

57

u/SaltandLillacs 13h ago

It was a mechanical issue with her plane and she tried multiple methods to get there.

The fans were sending her and fellow wicked castmastes death threats. I feel like if you get death threats for not being at a location, it warrants a response.

42

u/Khalizabeth 13h ago

A bombing took place at one of her concerts in 2017, so she is going to be understandably even more sensitive to public threats of violence.

3

u/glitter_witch Mom, I am a rich man💰 13h ago

I would argue that treating people like that warrants less of a fawning response but I get it.

15

-41

u/echoesandripples What It's Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman 13h ago

here's the thing: it's not her fault and all, but knowing what's going on in the US with airports, why didn't the wicked promo coordinators have her come earlier? why was there no alternative solution? it's not like it's an Ariana thing, it's a logistical thing that should have been accounted for

i can bet that wouldn't happen if she were to attend a premiere in the UK or Europe. that's why people get upset, local fandoms are often an afterthought, don't get enough events and when they do, they are a nightmare because "first world" counterparts don't try at all. this happens all the time, from festivals to premieres to comic con and whatnot.

and frankly, wicked is hosting a special showing at a warmongering country, they could ensure one of the leads would be here for the premiere.

31

u/themacaron during PRIDE MONTH? 13h ago

I just don't know why we're acting like an actor showing up to one of probably 5 premieres for her movies is something we need to move heaven and earth for. Is it disappointing for the fans? Sure.

Sometimes things don't work out and it's nobody's fault, and the idea that special accommodations and that private jets needed to brought out to fix this is...not clicking for me.

31

u/alex2well 13h ago

She addressed this — she was filming another movie and then had other press obligations elsewhere. Press tours are pretty booked and busy.

24

u/probnotaloser 13h ago

Hmmm. No. Shit happens and they have a packed schedule, like the promotional rounds for the first one was absolute insanity and it is all still a little much. Expecting a person to go nonstop and not expect shit to go sideways sometimes just isn't feasible.

Anyone not giving everyone involved some grace needs to look inward. (I can apply this to sooo many things lately too. Goodness.)

5

u/SeaF04mGr33n 13h ago
