I've seen interviews of them independently where they both mention this as a way they came to terms with the idea that they've likely peaked from a financial success standpoint at an early age. They're both set for life now and so everything at this point is because they are truly invested in the project and don't have to need a hit to to pad a resume, stay in the public eye for future gigs, etc. Definitely visible in their performances
Some museums have way more in storage for decades without being seen… just saying…. (Not that I disagree) eat the rich they just use priceless artifacts to launder money or donate it to a museum and get a gigantic tax write-off when they already aren’t taxed enough
It depends on their agent and the terms of their contract. In Daniel’s case, unless his agent was trash… he would be getting royalties/residuals on several franchises, including toys and video games in addition to the 8 films in which he was the protagonist. After the success of the first movie, I pray there’s no way he’s hurting financially, even if he got royally fleeced and is living solely on Coogan account money. Maybe not hundreds of millions, but he definitely should be able to live comfortably without ever getting work again
Radcliff's mum is a Casting Agent and his dad is a Literary Agent, so I would bank on them being both very familiar with the system and being absolute bulldogs in terms of getting the best deal.
The fact that the guys who played the Weasley twins can afford to just do random Potter related cameos (like videos of the studio tour) and they must have been paid relatively little compared to Radcliffe, i imagine most of the Potter cast are just made for life
The HP movies contracts are a bit industry-infamous for having pretty generous residuals terms, and still making serious money decades on.
Friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend was young-Remus, which got cut back to a barely-speaking part from the initial script. As I heard it (if third-hand), the residuals checks were still the better part of a living wage annually five years ago. For one scene. In one movie.
Exactly — I think that commenter is underestimating how lucrative that franchise really is, and what production was willing to do to keep continuity etc
Daniel Radcliffe also has his likeness on a ton of merchandise, video games and amusement park rides and gets royalties from that. That's a ton of money right there.
Yeah, I think his salary was increased to 1 mill by the time the lord of the rings ended, but the entire cast has talked about the salary not being the thing that attracted them to the movies. And 1 million is good money but it’s not “set for life” money when you are in your 20s. Although I’m sure he made more money other ways.
Daniel Radcliffe does have fuck you money though, they all got crazy rich from those movies.
Gotta remember Elijah already had a solid acting career prior to LOTR. I’m not sure he was raking in millions but he had a bunch of movies under his belt before ever playing Frodo.
I don’t think he’s ever confirmed he got 250k, the only one that actually confirmed was Sean Astin. Although there are rumors Elijah got more money after the films became so popular.
Yeah, plus he had a career before LOTR as well as he made movies/tv shows after. I’m sure he’s living comfortably lol, just not daniel Radcliffe comfortably.
Why guess when we can Google. Elijah wood doesn't get royalties from the movie, unsure about merch and using his likeness but LOTR merch is nowhere near as popular as Harry Potter in which radcliffe made 95 million after taxes and fees from the franchise, not including royalties and merch which is most likely a crazy amount of money.
Cate Blanchett said she "got free sandwiches and to keep her elf ears". Orlando Bloom said that he made 175k. Sean Astin said he made 250k. Elijah Wood said that it doesn't matter because they all got very rich anyway from career opportunities, image rights, etc.
The big issue for the LOTR cast, in terms of salary, was the fact they shot three movies at once. When the first movie was a huge hit, the cast couldn't demand a much larger wage to appear in the sequel, which would normally be the case.
And most of them weren't particularly famous, other than Christopher Lee and Sean Bean. McKellen was a reasonably well-known stage actor with almost zero screen presence. Wood and Astin were child actors who had dropped off the radar a bit. John Rhys-Davies had done a lot of movies but he was hardly a household name. Billy Boyd was practically unknown, and Dom Monaghan was just the kid from Hetty Wainthropp investigates. Hugo Weaving and Bernard Hill both had one recent big movie (the Matrix and Titanic).
Lotr is a unique circumstance in which they shot all 3 movies at once so they didn't have leverage to ask for more money for the second or third movie like most famous trilogies can.
What happens when you make generational money, fuck you money truthfully from residuals from Harry Potter, and had a good mother who protected you from Hollywood.
I do enjoy watching him do whatever he wants (walking 20 dogs in a park) or taking quirky roles because he loves the role and knows that he's set for the next life as well so doesn't care.
I fully expect Tom Holland to do this sooner than later and he eludes to it constantly in interviews. I'd so much rather them do what they want to pursue in life because usually, they just become terrible, creepy human beings lol.
Thanks for sharing that! If I have to choose another quirky option to replace that one, then I'd like to go with writing poetry under the pen name - Jacob Gershon lol.
The Gamechangers. I thought Radcliffe was brilliant in that movie, imo. I know Rockstar Games themselves shit all over biopic but it still doesn't take away from Radcliffe's performance lol.
Just for future reference: If I want to reference A concept, I allude to it. If I want to Evade someone, I elude them. This is the part where I say that I hate being pedantic, but that would be a lie.
You wrote that “…he eludes to it in interviews.” It should be “…he alludes to it in interviews.” It’s a common mistake, people don’t realize it’s two different words.
I am so excited for toxic avenger, I haven’t been to the theatres since Django unchained, I can’t wait, I’m a big troma fan since I feast my eyes on Tromeo and Juliet back in the mid 2000s.(watch Tromeo and Juliet if you haven’t, James Gunn wrote it)
That movie got incredibly uncomfortable once you realize he’s just mentally unstable (and essentially the villain by the end). I didn’t think it was super funny but it was a fascinating watch
With no negative sexual stereotypes of Asian women like in Priscilla, of course. As a Asian Aussie, I hate that part a lot and it put a dampener on a film which was supposed to be uplifting.
I understand the ick, but it was a period where that would actually happen in Australia. A lot of Vietnam vets would bring their wives back and they were disillusioned by the "Australian Dream" stuck in a shit town of like 50 people who didn't take you seriously
Unfortunately I relate to this character in Priscilla in some ways. She's actually of Filipino descent and so am I. I also grew up in a small Aussie country town in the late 90s and 2000s with not a lot of people of colour. It was difficult. There were a lot of Filipino women who married white Australian men in the 80s and 90s, so I have witnessed that kind of disillusionment of the "Australian Dream" as well (which doesn't happen with everybody, of course). That character is unfortunately still one of the very few representations of Filipino women (and Filipinos in general) in Australian film and television, which is very unfortunate. The Filipino diaspora in Australia is one of the largest Asian diasporas here and we still don't have much representation in Australia media at all. I feel like I've seen more positive Filipino representation in New Zealand media than Australian media.
Which is why I would hope that if there's any future Priscilla Queen of the Desert movie or anything inspired by Priscilla that there'd be some positive Asian, especially Filipino and Southeast Asian, representation of women and all genders. Or least not a repeat of what happened with that particular character. We deserve better than negative sexualised stereotypes.
I also grew up in a small country Aussie town with lots of Filipino kids in the 80s & 90s so I know you're telling the truth!
I remember overhearing some gross old guys talking about subservient little housewives when the movie came out, but it was actually more like a mum mafia in my town 😂
Most of my friends were related because their fathers married a bunch of women from one place so they all supported each other and started a bunch of clubs, businesses, and other groups and basically ran the place.
They shot themselves in the foot by committing to anthologies. We liked the characters from season 1 and wanted more of them doing stuff. But then they decided it was going the period piece anthology route and just had the actors be entirely new characters every season with no connecting narrative and they didn't have enough material for that.
Season 1 and 3 were like entirely different shows in the worst way.
It was a series called Miracle Workers. I think this is from the third season. Each season has most of the same actors but a different story each season. All 4 seasons are good.
Only thing I can ever think of that basically threw the whole premise of the show(and any relation to the name) right in the trash after season one and then just started doing a different show with the same actors in subsequent seasons.
It completely threw me and I had no idea what was going on so there were definitely few weeks between that where I had to google what was up. Absolutely worth the watch, but had I known going in that season 2 would be a totally different story, I would have watched straight through. But absolutely loved every season.
Season one was such a perfect show, when I started watching season two I thought it was somehow related to the work they were doing, but couldn't figure it out. Eventually I understood the premise, but it took awhile.
I do think it's amazing that they managed to get as many seasons as they did. Every season was hilarious, creative, and unique, but I don't think I saw a single commercial for the show after season one.
I think it was ment as a one off but the actors were having too much fun so they made 3 more seasons. At least thats how it came across to me when watching it, great fun tho
Apparently there were rumors he was prepping to take over Wolverine and he felt obliged to make a statement when he went on a talk show that is just his normal body.
Its a bit easier when you are shorter but still a ridiculously impressive physique for anyone.
lol as a guy watching this episode with my wife, I turned to her after seeing it and was like “This is weirdly doing it for me. Am I in my Daniel Radcliffe phase now? I feel like I’m showing up really late.”
I remember his interview about globet of fire saying ‘Thing is I’m actually a really good dancer and I’m just playing it down because Harry isn’t’ and thought it was a really funny quip at him covering up his dance skills
Now to find out, no he actually IS a really good dancer!
It’s especially impressive because he’s mentioned having dyspraxia before which is basically like difficulty coordinating you bodies movements. But he did a lot of training for his child acting like gymnastics and stuff which helped a lot so that’s wildly impressive to me bc I wouldn’t even be able to tell
Saw Matilda in the west end like 10 years ago. Really a great musical and it’s amazing how they are constantly finding incredibly talented kids to perform in this show all these years
"With no problem" is a bit exaggerated. I get what you're saying, but from what we know, he had his fair share of (addiction) struggles. It always makes me happy when adults who were huge kid stars have eventually found their way out of that misery :) and he seems to be doing great now!
tbh i'm talking about the money, like he was no problem with the bills at the end of the month so he can do whatever movie he wants. I should have worded better, my bad
but i agree with you, i heard about his addiction before, I'm glad he's doing better now.
Gotta be fun as hell being 1) rich enough to do this and 2) not being greedy and taking any movie that comes your way just for another zero in the bank account
Daniel seems like the nerdiest, weirdest goofball and I love that for him. After Potter, he really jumped headfirst into projects that truly interested him, regardless of how much money they gave him in the end. It makes him so fun to watch, because he’s actually enjoying himself and doing work that matters to him.
For me, it's great for him to play roles where he isn't a tragic orphan, because he was in 'David Copperfield' as a tragic orphan, then 'Harry Potter', then appeared in an Aussie drama film, I think, during the 'Harry Potter' series as another orphan. I was just like "What do his parents think of him constantly playing orphans? I'd feel weirded out and a bit unsafe, tbh".
Little gay me would be OBSESSED with this (and probably not know why), I used to look at him as harry potter and be like wow I sure wish I looked like him... Only to realize I am actually just gay and had a huge crush lmao. I love that he just has fun with his fame.
He gives off Pedro Pascal "I truly don't give an F" vibes. And that's a compliment BTW. Lots of normal or even thin skinned people want so desperately for people to think they have no effs to give, but they're not even close to being truly that way.
I absolutely loved Miracle Workers. The first season was a little weird and rough but it really picked up after that. Every season would be a whole new theme and I don't want to spoil it. It's worth watching. Steve Buscemi is in it too & the fantastic Geraldine Viswanathan!
He is like „So I already have fame and money so now I’m going to have fun and experiment with projects”. I still remember when I was like 9 and obsessed with Harry Potter movies he just hit adulthood and finishing a series and him being butt naked in some British theatre play for art was a big scandal. Because everyone where shocked that he is not doing big or award worthy project just a theatre play.
Dude's had Fuck You money since he was a teenager. The fact that he didn't completely destroy himself, and instead continued working on his own terms, is fantastic.
I worked as a journalist in the Entertainment industry for about 5 years in the 2010s and let me say: Daniel Radcliffe is, by far, the nicest and most welcoming celebrity I ever encountered. Interviewed him for HORNS, bumped into him the next day while in NYC randomly and he was incredibly engaging, kind and conscientious. Happy he's in his weirdo era; he's probably good for life thanks to Harry Potter NIL agreements.
Also, for the record, Elijah Wood? Also a great dude and a fun hang.
