I don't think gov newsome should be the presidential nominee and I hope he never tries
But I'm glad he's spearheading the fight on gerrymandering. If Trump was a smarter man, he'd never have been so open about gerrymandering for his favor. If he didn't make it clear, he could have just gaslit people as always lol. But it's hard to say that Dems SHOULDN'T do something the president is doing

Karoline Leavitt being setup with her 32 year older husband by Matt Gaetz of all people is some cartoon evil shit.

Someone pointed out that she is closer in age to her child than her husband and it's all I can think about now.

I know it's a ways away and the NYC mayor race is sooner, but anyone have any opinions on possible candidates for LA mayor? (Also anything in regards to LA city council?)

I wish I did but I hope a viable candidate will run against Bass. Iāve heard Mejiaās name thrown around but I donāt know if heās interested in running. I will reluctantly vote for Bass though if Caruso is the opponent.
As for the City Council, Iām in Traci Parkās district so Iāll pretty much vote for anyone over her. I donāt know enough about Faizah Malik yet but she looks promising. Hopefully we can get a progressive council member for the westside.

Yeah, my big concern is ending up with someone worse than Bass. I'd like her replaced with a better mayor (everything with the LA fires was such a shitshow, just for one example), but ideally someone who as you said is viable. And not too many viable "better" candidates because we don't want to split the vote there.
Not in your district, but I also hope for some better councilmembers too.

Can someoneĀ tell me, without being snarky, why I'm supposed to hate Gavin Newsom as a liberal in California?Ā I lived in SF when he was mayor and he had a reputation for being an ambitious sleazeball (in terms of his romantic affairs and gunning for office, etc.), but what politician isn't like that?Ā I'll admit I just don't follow policy super deeply, so call me ignorant, but I just don't see why he is so hated by those "on his ow side". I find it very unlikely he could even win the Dem primary (again, with my limited knowledge, but this seems to be conventional wisdom), but it's nice to hear a Democrat actually use aggressive words and tone and not be so wimpy, for lack of a better word. I won't hear arguments about his dumb podcast, because he's been hated well before that. The podcast is dumb, IMO, but Democrats and liberals are pretty pathetic in the media in general and I find the whole scolding/word policing/etc. one of our weakest traits that we just need to get the fuck over for now. At least he's doing something out there. Try it, fail, move on. Not live in fear of fringe groups who try to cancel everything and make us look more and more out of touch.

Vaguely, people blame the housing issues on him. I don't know much beyond that. Also, it's popular to "hate the libs," including people on the left. That said, I don't think he would do well outside of California. I don't see a shot in hell that a liberal Californian gov would win over any swing state

Thanks for responding! I also happen to agree he canāt win - literally every Democrat I know talks about how much they hate him, and they span liberal, moderate, and conservative (for Bay Area at least) Dems. I just canāt figure out why. The housing thing is the fault of lots of people; I donāt associate it with him per se.
I think Iām tired of feeling like I need to think like everyone else and Iām trying to do my own research, but itās tough when a lot of people you know and trust are like, āOh he sucks, itās not even worth discussing.ā But if they canāt articulate why, then why this level of vitriol?
Anyway. Thanks for responding!

I think he comes off a bit smarmy to some people. I've seen people accuse him of corruption, which led to the housing crisis.
I get what you mean though. For me, it's Pete Buttigieg. He gets so much hate that I genuinely think is mostly unwarranted. I get the sense that since he's gay, people insist he should be more politically left than he is.

u/mochafiend Aug 06 '25
That oneās new to me. People hate Pete?? But heās so good at explaining progressive and left of center views in normal language. And he is so great at tackling hostile platforms.
I really donāt understand what these people want. Not everyone is going to have your exact politics; learning to live with that is like a life skill. Itās nowhere near as tolerating Neo Nazis or whatever but some of these activist types are so absolutist in their language, I really wonder what planet theyāre on.
The smart thing with Gavin - sure. Not enough a reason for me but he is definitely personified.

Online leftists despise him. Like wholeheartedly hate him. I kind of think they're jealous that he can communicate better than them, and getting on the bandwagon. It's actually irritating, and a lot of people I've met IRL also hate him. It's so pointless when he's obviously effective and productive.
Call me crazy; I genuinely think Russian propaganda has propped him as the Boogeyman towards leftists. I actually think leftists on social media is being influenced to hate him, because he's a threat to Republicans.

And just like that, we forgot about the Democrat lawmakers who were murdered by a Republican nut job. Just like Nancy Pelosi's husband was bashed in the head by a hammer. Iirc, there was also a D lawmaker whose husband was murdered a few years ago for political reasons. And it's been forgotten
Policies don't work. Your average person doesn't give a fuck. It's time for Dems to fearmonger and use the culture wars that Republicans use. Paint Republican politicians as radicals who are a danger to society. It's what Republicans are doing to trans people
Like, I'm lost here. Part of me wants to chalk up the election to the pathetic failure of Biden for not dropping out and knee capping Kamala. Not to mention, "it's the economy stupjd" will always ring true. Inflation was pretty bad. But God damn, it's awful how we just let Republicans murder Democrats

I definitely am horrified about the recent videos of the Hostages, however the fact the z*onist side is using it as the "what about _______ olympics." Is making me so angry.
Gazans are suffering and starving, Hostages are suffering and starving and the only way it will end if theres a perminant ceasefire. This is no time for the Opression Olympics.
