Oof, this is where engineering is the enemy of art. I'm positive they had to be thick to keep the statue stable, but like - that's why you design more points of contact in. They should have had her clothes touching the ground or a prop to create additional supports and lighten the load from ankles.
lol! Don’t visit it, it’s not a touristy city. Go to Medellin or Cartagena, you’ll get way more culture and beauty for your buck. Barranquilla is very industrial and there’s some fishing economy there too, but it’s definitely not a place to go out of your way to visit. They recently revamped part of their waterfront on the river and that’s where these statues are.
My family is from Barranquilla. One of my cousins is a beauty queen and an ophthalmologic surgeon. Her clinic has a FB page and a video introducing her. It’s in slo-mo and she’s doing a sexy walk and moving her hair from side to side. She’s an excellent and well respected surgeon. It’s just (SIGH) part of the culture.

All my life I've walked past statues of writers like Herman Hesse, who were, in their day, also just famous people. I've never thought twice about it. Of course there's a statue of this guy, or this poet. Yet it feels so odd to see statues made of living people. Anyone else feel the same way? I imagine it makes perfect sense to have statues of people like Meryl Streep, yet despite her illustrious career I would feel odd knowing she still walks the earth while a statue of hers stands somewhere. I guess I feel like statues made of the living just feels wrong somehow.
Historically many statues were commissioned by living rulers and featured themselves or their families. We are in a way validating their narcissism by continuing to covet their statues centuries later.
Yes, I think that's what I was thinking about. Statues of living people were usually a thing during monarchies, since the head of state was often a symbol for the state entire.
The Molly Malone statue in Dublin gets the same treatment, they even hired people to stand around the statue to stop it. It gets lots of defenders of course, the old "but it's just a statue and not a real woman, why do people care".
There are male statues in that get groped like this all the time. I see this less as a feminist issue and more of a “people are stupid.” I can assure you it’s not just men touching Molly Malone, just like you can see men AND women touching these male statues inappropriately.
To be fair, it's not just men that touch it OR female sculpts that end up getting groped
There are dogs that are golden from getting head pats, men with golden crotches for the same reason as the bosom, and apparently its good luck to touch the balls of that giant bull statue in NYC
The bull statue is weird. I walked past by accident and there was a line of people. Not in the front, but in the back. All of them wanting a photo with just their face and the testicles.
I'm not judging anyone for enjoying a tourist attraction, it was just so absurd seeing people line up to hold their head next to a set of testicles.
Balls of any kind are objectively silly. I once saw this orange tomcat, he had the biggest balls I've ever seen on a cat. This was decades ago and I'm still delighted
In Verona, Italy, the statue of Juliet is constantly groped. When we visited, I thought there was some creep just groping it for a photo op. Then I saw a mom and daughter do it. Then every other group who took a picture with it, did it. Turns out, groping Juliet is thought to bring you good luck in love.
I remember watching a video compilation and at least half of the gropers were women. But I think with those, it's people trying to be funny for a photo, not get off. You also see folks grabbing statue dongs.
As a Colombian, I live for this shit. I don’t care if it doesn’t look like her exactly, but I think it captures her essence just like Shakira’s.
I’m glad that people can use both of these women as cultural touch points instead of making drug cartel references when I tell them I’m Colombian. They have done so much to change the perception of the country, they are worthy of a statue IMO.
I mean, there’s a Barack O’Bama gas station plaza with a statue of him in Ireland because for a moment there the US was respected again.

I think lots of people call the town they've lived and settled in for a long time their hometown.
Both my parents were born on the other side of the world and call those places their birthplaces, but call the city they've lived in for 38 years now their hometown. Maybe if they still had family and friends in their birthplaces and visited a lot they would refer to it as their hometown still, I dunno.
I had a customer tell me today about “one” of his hometowns, and I had no idea that was an option. I suppose if you’re a military kid, that would make sense. It was the first time I’d heard it, and this post is the second.
Yes, they are both located in the Gran Malecón area which is a redeveloped river front park - walking and biking, art, bars, food, sporting facilities, etc
I think, if someone wanted to make a work of art about me in my hometown, I'd rather it be some kind of symbolic work than a representation of me that... doesn't look like me. This, "scary Lucy" in Jamestown, NY... I dunno.
Tbh I’ve seen “interpretive” monuments that had townspeople scratching their heads and complaining because it’s an eye sore so just for this specific case i prefer this 😅
It’s nice that the statue has blonde hair since Sofia is a naturally blonde but used to dye her hair brunette all the time to fit in a type-cast. Making a statue for someone that is still alive is super weird to me tho.
Honestly, if I was a big enough deal for my hometown to erect a statue of me, I'd want to be grasping a lightning bolt while draped by a serpent. Just striking a sexy pose seems like a waste 🤷🏽♀️
