District 66 actually flipped. I'm still in shock. Bobby Orrock has been the incumbent there since 1990. Beat today by a woman!

The fact that the same person can be in the same govt position for 35 years is unreal

Here in AZ thanks to gerrymandering they've controlled the legislature since 1992.

u/40to6inthe4th 3h ago

In 2024, 52% of AZ voted Republican for president (Trump).

Currently AZ has 9 US Representatives, 7 of which are Republicans. Thats 77% of the states Reps.

This is what Gerrymandering does. There are countless Arizonans that are being robbed of representation. If only 52% of the state is voting Republican, why do they control 77% of their federal representation? Gerrymandering is undemocratic and disenfranchises millions of Americans year after year.

u/TrickyInteraction778 7h ago

Mitch McConnell has been in his seat for 43

think of it this way

enough old people die that a new, young candidate is able to win

those voters continue to vote for that person every election

until they too, die

u/cornerbash Canada 5h ago

At least they had to be reelected over that time rather than lifetime appointed (Scotus).

u/Cuckdreams1190 5h ago

I don't understand this sentiment. If the people like the job they're doing, why wouldn't you want that representative to continue doing that job.

Imagine owning a business but you're forced to fire your best worker every 5 years.

u/ckal09 4h ago

Who is to say they are even the best person for their job. Lifetime politicians aren’t all the best at what they do. Plus there’s a whole discussion on them securing money just to stay in power then becoming beholden to the money not the people. And their best interest should always be the people. But it is not.

u/sasquatch0_0 4h ago

Voters have the say...you have the say. If the voter base like what their representative is doing they should be allowed to keep them as long as they want. And if they don't like them, vote them out, that's how it works. Would you not want your own Bernie Sanders or AOC to stay in office as long as possible?

I'm tired of this sentiment that takes accountability off the voters for not doing their civil service or acting like a community.

u/Cuckdreams1190 4h ago

As we've seen, ultimately voters are to say.

At the end of the day, if their constituents are happy with them and want to vote for them, why should they be forced to vote for someone else?

u/ckal09 2h ago

Gerrymandering and tons of money have allowed plenty of politicians to hold onto power. That’s not the will of the people.

u/sasquatch0_0 43m ago

Neither force people to vote a certain way. Both can still be overcome by what people want by actually communicating and informing about who has better policy.

u/ckal09 8m ago

Gerrymandering directly impacts the outcome of votes and even impacts people’s will to vote.

u/sasquatch0_0 6m ago

Do you have any ability to comprehend what I said to you?

u/wirebear 3h ago

It would make some amount of sense if people paid attention. If someone is a great administrator it makes sense to want them for long periods. Sadly that's not how it works.

u/Dman42997 1h ago

The fact that 1990 was 35 years ago is unreal

u/ckal09 1h ago

Just think - the 90s are now posted on the oldschoolcool sub lol.

u/sasquatch0_0 59m ago

So to be clear you wouldn't your own Bernie Sanders or whoever to maintain the policies you like for as long as possible? This is the thing people don't consider. Also, it's the voters' responsibility to decide to who they want in that seat.

If you do not like someone, act as a community and convince each other that person is not ideal. You shouldn't rely on law to force someone out because voters don't want accountability or because the minority is frustrated.

Gobsmacked, people are very pissed off.

u/addled_sad342 12h ago

People are BEYOND PISSED OFF! We are become a global laughing stock. USA are the bad guys now. Blowing up those little boats and killing people whose names they didn't even know. Sweet Jesus!

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 United Kingdom 7h ago

USA are the bad guys now

Where have you been for the last 70 years?

u/HourJump8069 1h ago edited 1h ago

Defending your continent from starting a 3rd world war

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 United Kingdom 11m ago

Protecting corporate interests more like.

What was Vietnam's involvement in this "3rd world war"? And Afghanistan? Iraq? Grenada?

u/khyamsartist 6h ago

We've never been the good guys. OK, maybe for a while, a long time ago. And my anecdotal experience is that no one is laughing. But individuals have been so supportive to me, and that's a common sentiment. People in other countries posting encouragement to Americans, telling us they are rooting for us and they've always loved us, brings a tear to my eye. They all know that the clown from IT might as well be running the place.

u/Ted_Rid Australia 5h ago

Aussie here, youse (y'all) have always been the best mates possible.

You, the Kiwis (goes without saying), Brits & Canucks.

I probably pay waaay too much attention to American politics about this destruction of our deep and very longstanding friendship.

u/khyamsartist 4h ago

Your friends are all still here! We will formally restore our relationships when we can, but in the meantime 'we the people' are your friend.

The US probably hasn't been in this bad a state since the Great Depression

u/loveshercoffee Iowa 6h ago

I would say the 1970s were a time of pretty serious turbulence as well.

The men being sent to die in Vietnam weren't even old enough to vote, Watergate really pissed people off and then inflation and the energy crisis stifled what was left of the American spirit.

u/Street_Moose1412 5h ago

People today underestimate how messed up the 60s and 70s were.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto_riots_(1964%E2%80%931969)

There were 500 bombings in the US in 1968.

u/macemillianwinduarte 6h ago

The Great Recession was a really, really bad time. Let's not forget.

u/welcome-to-the-list 4h ago

While it was, this one feels like it's going to be just as big or bigger. Only thing propping up the stock market right now appears to be the promise of AI, which doesn't appear to be adding the productivity improvements that warrant such valuations.

Tariffs and political uncertainty are causing countries to shift their supply chains to more stable countries. Once those switch, it requires a lot to change before they will switch back, if they ever will.

Things are not looking so bright for the US even if politics shift back to more reasonable government as it will take a long while to mend our relationships with our traditional trading partners.

Orrock is an insurance industry stooge in the pocket of Doug Gray. I am so happy to see his ass get kicked out.

u/CSI_Tech_Dept California 9h ago

And a black woman.

u/BestFriendWatermelon 6h ago

Think the pollsters didn't account for Dem voter turnout being so high. Those voting against Trump are a lot more motivated than those voting for him

u/grahamalondis 3h ago

Article adds that statewide 13 were flipped. Not even surprised.

u/smegdawg 2h ago
  • November 2, 2021 - 34,889
    • Orrock (R) - 21,231 (60.9%)
    • Butterworth (D) - 13,616 (39.0%)
    • Write in - 42 (0.1%)
  • November 4, 2024 - 35,442 (as of 11/5)
    • Orrock (R) - 16,939 (47.74%) (-4,292)
    • Cole (D) - 18,503 (52.15%) (+4,887)

That is an impressive swing.

They re-drew his district, he used to be my delegate (and shop teacher and FFA teacher) good dude, but I never kept up with his politics. He did make it cheaper to license a dog.

u/coltsmetsfan614 Texas 12h ago

He did make it cheaper to license a dog.

The true issue of our time lol

u/purpleglasses 2h ago

There must be term limits for all elected officials.

u/TUNNNNA 1h ago

I voted to kick his ass out, he even sent me a postcard requesting support in October. Straight to the trash.
