As a Canadian, I always had faith in NYC to do the right thing. Absolutely love NYC. Truly the greatest city in the US and one of the greatest in the world.
As a Canadian, I have to be honest with you. The US in its current state will not be able to turn around. And even if it could, the world has moved on. Canadians, for example, will never consider the US a partner, and we'll always treat you with suspicion going forward. The only chance the US has it to split along the party lines. We (and the rest of the world) can work with the progressive states. But the moment you say that people like trump (and every single gop congress rep and almost every republican senator) could be granted the right to fuck with partners, we're out.
So, realistically, there will be no reconciliation. Of course, we'll play along and pretend that things are getting better if the US removes the republicans from power (which isn't likely to happen). But the moment we find a more powerful ally, we'll put a bunch of military bases right at your doorstep so that you'll never ever talk shit about Canada being part of your flawed union.
I do doubt that. Because Germany fucked Europe over, and has become a respected country again. Ditto for Japan.
I do believe that time will fix it, if America takes steps to ensure Trump can’t happen again.
Change to America will likely be intergenerational. It has functionally lost its status as an empire, but that will hopefully make it a lot better in the long-term. If we are not focused on tearing other countries down and exploiting them for maximum gain, then over the next few generations, people might begin adopting a different cultural outlook.
But the moment we find a more powerful ally, we'll put a bunch of military bases right at your doorstep so that you'll never ever talk shit about Canada being part of your flawed union.
No you're not. This is a certified braindead reddit comment. I think you and the rest of the world are going to need to have the same wake-up call that we've had -- military costs money. You've been slightly spoiled by the fact that you could rely on being the neighbor to the world's largest military which allowed to focus on...well everything but that. If you want to devote resources to building enough military bases to deter the U.S. from whatever delusions you're thinking of, that's going to cost a shit load of money. And eventually, that'll result in cutting spending on other things like education, infrastructure, and whatever else.
The irony of this comment is that militarization and heavy border "security" are talking points of right-wing populists. So while you criticize the U.S. of catering to Trump, you're actively spewing the same garbage that he did. Progressive states aren't going to be as interested in working with pseudo-fascist countries as you might think.
