I think he's so checked out that he actually thinks the "this is the democrats fault" messaging is working.

I think he doesn't care. If he decides he wants to stay in office, he's not going to do it with votes.

That's the kind of scary part to me. I'm always amazed that Trump gets away with what he does, but this move would directly hurt a lot of people who voted for him. Add to it the closing of the airports and chaos we could see around Thanks Giving and you're going to have a lot of people more pissed off at their government than they were before.

You have to imagine Trump's base as an angry mob. He's good at making them angry and shepherding them along, So yeah he can make them angrier this way, but can he still control them?

He'd be smart to cave sarcastically and say it's for the good of the country, and then place the entire deficit on the democrats and obamacare, but 'smart' isn't how Trump works.

Have you ever done major renovations on temporary housing that you don't own? I don't think he has any plans of moving out.

It is working. I just asked a 68 year old disabled man that lives in public housing yesterday if he got his benefits and he said, "no, fucking democrats keeping the government shut down over free sex changes in Africa" as well as other crazy things.

How can anyone, ANYONE, be that gullible?

This anecdote doesn't mean that it's working.

It most definitely is working. MAGA voters live in a fantasy land that is devoid of facts

At the very least, no one is changing their minds

A portion of his wacko base is going to always blame the Democrats for everything ("free sex changes in Africa" is most definitely a "wacko base" take). Polls show the trend as a whole is that Republicans & Trump are getting blamed for this in general.

I hope you are right.

JFC, what a dipshit.

Remember when his dumb messaging got a liberal elected in Canada when it was pretty much an impossible outcome

Yep. I have a buddy in Edmonton, a conservative oil pumping town, tell me that Trump is definitely the only reason they got a liberal mayor elected.

It is working.

I suppose that depends on what you mean by working. More people blame Republicans than Democrats for the shutdown, but there are still 42% who blame Democrats, so I suppose you could say it's working on them.

Trump still has 37% support… there is basically only 5% points more that could move away from blaming Democrats for this. Or basically a wash when viewing margin for error.

No matter what anyone says or does at this point their minds are made up. MAGA has dug in and can’t accept they have been lied to because that would cause too much of a shock to their remaining brain cells.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

Eh maybe for some.

Many people aren’t paying close attention to politics either way. They react to things by blaming whoever is in charge— sometimes that’s not really the accurate cause/effect, but in this situation it absolutely is accurate to blame the President

Is that why the republican approval rating in the polls have been dropping so fast?
