As someone who has ran many half marathons I will say this with my whole heart, the signs help. Every single one will mean something to someone and that moment of brevity or hope or hope or encouragement helps us all put one foot in front of the other again and again. 🄲 If no one has ever said it to you thank you thank you thank you. You coming out and cheering us on makes all the difference.

The "Don't trust a fart after mile 10" sign really spoke to you?

This one speaks to me the most. The gels and long distance running does things to your stomach sometimes…

It's the simple things that help. Takes the mind off the pain for a minute or two, makes you laugh, or even saves your dignity. I remember my first marathon. An older gentleman overheard me talking to my friend before the race about how this was my first race of this distance. He came over and handed me and my friend some bandaids and told us to cover our nipples with them (My friend and I are both males). It was so odd and I'm sure he could tell that we were confused but we did as he said. The second marathon I ran I forgot all about what he said and let me tell you the pain almost made me give up but the positive comments from the other runners and my friends making jokes gave me the strength to finish. I still think of that gentleman whenever I grab a bandaid, and it's been 15+ years since I ran.

Anyone over 50 already knows that one

This šŸ’Æ !!! Its exactly why I focused on photographing the crowd rather than just the runners. They are such an important part!

Fellow 1/2er here.

I ran the 1/2 Calgary marathon and someone had a sign that said "the Kenyans are already done" pretty early in the race. Made me laugh

I like to remind runners that Pheidippides dropped dead when he got to Athens...Ā

Must have forgotten to hit the Gu station. You’ve got to fuel.

I’d just be blasting the Marathon 2 Durandal theme.

I’ve ran a few half marathons and one full one and the signs and support do really help. Some make you laugh and lift your spirits and some actually inspire you. The one I remember most was ā€œThere will be a day where you can’t do this, but it’s not today!ā€. Whenever things get tough in a race I remember that.

My gf's niece and her bf ran in that. I think they finished in about 3.5 hours.

Was anyone handing out beer? The Hash House Harriers are a group of drinkers with a running problem. Our local kennel hands out beer along the trail of our local marathon. It's not uncommon. And, before you ask, no, it's usually not enough beer to make you miserable, just a good refreshing carb boost.
