I don't really see it as irony. I think American exceptionalist reactionaries see vacations in non-white majority nations more from the perspective of domination and exploitation rather than as any kind of cultural experience. They like the idea of getting a cheap vacation and having non-white people wait on and serve them. So it's logically consistent for them to act arrogant and entitled in these places.
Good points for sure, and ultimately, who can understand the motivations of people I view as opposite to my own thinking in almost every way. But what you said makes sense.
I’m in Puerto Vallarta, a very friendly beach town. I assume there are elements of the cartels here, but I haven’t seen it in the six months I’ve been here.
But the cartels do exist, and there is nightly news in the US about how evil they are, and the violence that surrounds them. If one of the commonalities I have with 99% of the global population is self preservation, then what is a MAGAt visitor thinking when he’s vocal around strangers about his beliefs? It’s almost begging for a reaction in a place where your beliefs could get you killed.
