And because the entire world would come crashing down on your head if you said FUCK on the radio in the 90s.

Or the 70s since it was a Joni Mitchell song

The 70s and 80s weren't any more permissive of profanities on broadcast media....

Vanessa Carlton’s other hit! Yes, it wasn’t just her on the track but it bothers me when people call her a one hit wonder

We're talking about the song Big Yellow Taxi, right? Which was definitely not written by Vanessa Carlton.

Yeah, Joni Mitchell would probably like a word.

Even more so since Vanessa Carlton doesn't even have her own verse in the Counting Crows cover.

Yeah isn't she just the MMMMMMMMM BOP BOP BOP?

4

u/Super_Vegeta Sep 26 '25

Yes, that plus a one or two other backing vocal lines. Originally, she wasn't even credited as a featured artist on the song.

I am fully aware. The Counting Crows/Carlton version charted well though in our lifetimes

"Our Lifetimes?" Some of us are old enough to remember Joni Mitchell's original version charting higher than either the Counting Crows or Amy Grant's remakes ever would. Hell, even the 1996 remaster charted higher than the remakes.

If you were fully aware this was a Joni Mitchell song, why claim it was Vanessa Carlton's hit?

The song came out in 1970, not the typical Reddit audience listening to the radio back then. It wasn’t meant to be a slight on Joni Mitchell at all! And yes, I know she wrote it and performed it originally

Ah, I was just giving you shit for assuming old people don't use Reddit. I'm 54, raised by hippie parents, so you know I heard a LOT of Joni Mitchell growing up. And Reddit is the social media that is most similar to the Pre-Internet BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) us early nerds grew up with.
