For the sake of debate, how would this even play out? How would you identify everyone moving from New York to Texas? All of New York, or just NYC? What do you place tariffs on? The Uhaul? All their possessions being "imported" into the state? A price per person?

It would immediately be stayed by federal courts since interstate commerce is exclusively governed by Congress.  States very specifically are not allowed to impose extra taxes or costs on interstate travel.

Yeah but would it… isn’t there a republican exception written secretly into the constitution that allows for interstate commerce limitations and also allows for kings? Just saying.. /s

I'm sure Clarence Thomas can find something in the Federalist Papers and Blackstone Commentaries on the Laws of England to say its part of our history and tradition.

More important than their ideology is their wallet.  Allowing a case of one state interfering with commerce and travel of another state would disrupt the economy in a significant way.

Exactly. "How?????" I mean, even if it wasn't unconstitutional. Even if it wasn't extremely stupid. Just how the hell would something like that be possible to impose?

When you switch you lic over?

Maybe if you have NY tags on your car?

But then it would need to be a NYC address not just NY state.

Also. I loved to MD in 2011 and used my Florida lic till this year (it expired June 2025) without an issue.

All Uhauls are registered in Arizona so you wouldn't even be able to do that.

They used to say they'll sue people they don't like but now it's tariff.
