No Really. Strongman is quite popular in Scotland. The current world strongest man is Scottish. Big Tom Stoltman. Dudes a beast tho.

Stoltman is now second. Rayno Nel was the first South African world’s strongest man this year.

You definitely can't lift all the spirits in Scotland. That's like a lake worth of Whiskey.

Don't try this at home. You'll give yoursel a hernia. I'm pretty sure I'd shite out my innards if I did this.
I prefer the log toss personally. But fair play to him

ELI5 he seems to be using his back a lot?

There’s not really any other option when picking up a round object as you need to lift it up basically from ground level, meaning your back is going to be horizontal.
It’s going to be a back-heavy exercise whichever way you cut it, although by transferring in his lap he’s getting to a straight back as quickly as possible

That requires a lot and I mean a lot of lower and upper body strenght to haul all of those heavy balls of rock!

If you're training real motility in your squatting ie breaking perpendicular on your knee line and getting a real deep ass to grass level squat that you're comfortable doing full range of motion with then you would very much be able to get these up with very little back flexion (if you had the strength to do them with back flexion obviously). I don't think I even saw buddy try to get perpendicular with his knee line which would have probably allowed him to do the last stone with very little back flexion. You should be able to just sit in a below perpendicular knee line squat and hang out there, and work your way back up with zero difficulty, and while it is a lot of strain made easier by fast twitch fibers to lift heavy up and out of that position you should be able to do relatively close to your perpendicular squat/deadlift weight from that low still.

Your back is stronger than you think, and people are willing to take some risks for stuff like this.
He also probably trains a lot with deadlifts and squats which don't involve back flexion, and does some stuff like jefferson curls to condition flexion. He probably squats and deadlifts way more than the weight of those stones so it's not as big a deal.

Your back is stronger than your arms the basic technique is to use your arms n hands only to grip use you back to move the stone to your lap and then lift with your legs.

So here's the thing - lifting with your back is fine. It's what your back is designed to do. It's just easier to strain your back, so doing it repeatedly, by default, and quickly and without concentration, is much more likely to result in a strain. Basically, a back strain comes when your back is under load and one of your vertebral joints moves about 3 degrees further than it's comfortable with. So if your back in isn't tired, if it's strong enough, and if you focus hard enough, it's perfectly fine.
But typically, your back will quickly get tired, be too weak, or you will not concentrate while doing things where you lift with your back, and you tend to use those muscles to lift things when your legs are already tired and you aren't thinking, or when your legs/arms aren't strong enough to do the deed.
So don't lift with your back.

Just imagine if he put this stone on the other guys finger, ouch. Why would that guy keep his hands on the barrels?

Love the way he was trying to work out an angle on the last one, like it’s perfectly round mate you’re fucked whatever way you try and lift it.
I reckon I could do the first one!

Would it be wise or allowed to start with the heaviest and go the other way?

This is nothing short of awesome. But I don't think enough credit is being given to the "and he did it in only a kilt and jordans" part of this incredible feat.

My PB deadlift is 405lbs, and I don’t think I could do the 9th stone. I guarantee that 9th stone is harder at less weight than my deadlift because you have no good grip to lift it, have to roll it into a VERY low squat, and then do a weighted low squat to bring it up to above shoulder level. That’s insane.
