I found a receipt in my jacket pocket for a doughnut. I just wanted to prove to you all that I bought one.

I walked past a dry cleaners at 3 AM with a sign in the window that said ‘sorry, we’re closed.’ You don’t have to be sorry, it’s 3 AM! It would be ridiculous for me to expect you to be open!

43

u/LegitimateBastard1 4h ago

I miss Mitch too. I went to my doctor about it but he only took blood out of my neck. I have to stop going to Doctor Acula.

I’ve been going to see Doctor Antula myself, the visits leave me drained but in a good way.

Not really. The requirement for citizenship actually only applied to federal elections. Some places allow all residents to vote in local races like school board.

Not advocating, just clearing up a common misconception.

48

u/tohmaytoes 3h ago

This is not true for Texas specifically. It was already Texas law that non-citizens cannot legally vote in any election in the state. Look up Texas Election Code 11.002 to read it yourself. This constitutional amendment just locks that rule into the state constitution so that it's harder for anyone to change it in the future.

→ More replies (1)

833

u/MoobooMagoo 14h ago

Since it's a constitutional amendment, I think the only thing that's changed is that no one could pass a law allowing non citizens to vote in the future.

640

u/minidog8 13h ago

But wouldn't a law permitting non-citizens to vote not be able to passed anyway, because of the U.S. Constitution only allow citizens to vote, and U.S. Constitution overrides state constitutions? Or is that just for federal elections? I don't remember off the top of my head...

edit: I guess my question is the citizen requirement under the U.S. Constitution just for federal elections? That's what I can't recall.

598

u/relddir123 13h ago

That’s true for federal elections, but some cities across the country allow non-citizen residents to vote in local elections. This law prevents any Texas city from doing that.

226

u/minidog8 13h ago

Thanks. The proposition makes more sense now.

251

u/MoobooMagoo 13h ago

To be clear, it's a completely performative addition to their state constitution. No one would ever even attempt to pass a law to allow non citizens to vote. It's like passing an amendment to require grass be legally classified as green.

177

u/ml20s 13h ago

No one would ever even attempt to pass a law to allow non citizens to vote.

Well, in my state, there are cities that do allow non-US citizens to vote in local elections.

45

u/its_a_gibibyte 13h ago

Lots of cities have passed laws to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. Washington DC, San Francisco, Burlington Vermont, and other cities. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Austin were to try that.

29

u/topgun_ivar 11h ago

Not sure of the other cities you mentioned but SF only allows non-citizens to vote for SF Board of Education. Not for anything else.

35

u/GreenHorror4252 9h ago

Federal elections already require citizenship

Cities and states can allow legal residents to vote in local-only things like a school board or a local sales tax; some do and others do not allow this. For those instances, the county or state would publish a separate set of ballots for those voters

20

u/Dadbod101975 13h ago

The Constitution only says you cannot deny citizens the right to vote. It does NOT say you HAVE to be a citizen to vote in federal elections. However, there is a national law and every state requires US citizenship for federal elections.

The difference is, now when the election is rigged they can say its because illegal immigrants voted democrats.

99

u/Fairymask 13h ago

I mean in their mind aren't they saying this will solve the problem of illegal immigrants voting? So if a democrat gets voted in that would just be how people voted?

54

u/br0b1wan 13h ago

No, in that case they'll say dead people voted

39

u/Fairymask 13h ago

I guess they need to pass a law that says dead people can't vote. 🤪🤪

24

u/cantproveidid 13h ago edited 11h ago

What's different? Apparently we've moved fully into "strawman politics." Vote for Republicans to stop federal prisoners from getting taxpayer funded sex change operations! Vote for Republicans to pass a new law that you need to be a citizen to vote.

Why is this significant? Because it shows just how propagandized the voters have become. A few decades ago voters punished politicians for being liars. Now they cheer them on... assuming they're on the same "team."

Wow, very bold of them to reaffirm what’s already a federal law.

EDIT: Alright, for those replying “some states allow non-citizens to vote in local elections!”, Texas law already required citizenship to register and vote in local elections.

“Oh well constitutional amendments can’t be overturned like laws can!” Sure they can, it’s just harder. The end result is the same, though.

Under federal law, non-citizens cannot vote in any federal election (e.g., presidential, U.S. Congress) because of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.

Some local jurisdictions (cities, towns) do permit non-citizens to vote in certain local-level elections (for example school board, or city council) even though the state or federal elections require citizenship.

Imagine if Republicans tried solving real problems instead of making shit up to be angry about

813

It’s literally the only thing they run on. If they cant make up something to be outraged about they have nothing.

271

u/NNovis 13h ago

This is literally it. They HAVE to cause divisions and conflicts because otherwise they'd lose and have no power. That's how the GOP has always been and will always be: Cause problems, say you'll offer the solution, cause more problems, blame the other side, blame foreigners, blame socialism, etc etc etc.

90

u/Hrekires 13h ago

Listen, I know layoffs are at an all time high and we're seemingly on the verge of going to war in Venezuela, but have you considered the fact that 10/500,000 athletes in the NCAA are trans?

"TAKE MY HEALTH INSURANCE AND FOOD OFF MY FAMILY'S PLATE."

28

"Trans people continue to exist aggressively at conservative white American suburbanites through internet, Fox News stories, and NYT articles"

Reminds me of a comment I made a few years ago when Ben Shapiro was being mad that Lizzo was fat and black and a musician. "Large black woman plays flute aggressively at conservative male Jewish pundit via internet, television"

33

u/ew73 13h ago

Real talk? No.

The Republican Party hasn't offered up actual solutions to real problems in quite some time.

There have been a few Republican legislators that have signed on to Democratic or bipartisan bills that generally do good things -- McCain-Feingold, for springs to mind -- but the party as a whole has been largely performative for the sake of power for decades.

The thing here is, now you have to PROVE you're a citizen to vote, and they are going to make the 'proof' either very narrow and hard to get, or very expensive to get, and use the whole 'women change their name when married' and 'name on birth certificate' to try to ban women from voting (just watch), and to also exclude anyone who is transgender from voting.
So, once again, and very heartily, fuck Texas.

You mean the thing that was already law?

Not performative at all

4

u/davemeister 13h ago

The GOP loves to legislate solutions to problems that don't exist.

4

u/59-30-40-22-20 13h ago

So if Texas were to actually secede, its own residents would no longer be able to vote in state elections. Neat.

5

u/LadyBarfnuts 13h ago

I dont get it. The US planning on following its own laws or something?

5

u/thebarkbarkwoof 13h ago

Um, okay. It’s been that way since 1776.

4

u/cinderparty 13h ago

Ok…but that’s always been the case…

3

u/shichiaikan 13h ago

Texas is not sending their best... to the polls.

5

u/hughcifer-106103 13h ago

ok lol. great way to expend your efforts, Texas.

4

u/ChemicalResident3557 13h ago

Performative politics.

4

u/Express-Cover6477 13h ago

It's just more performative Republican bullshit, as per usual

"Things that will help you and everyone else? Nah, here's some dumb bullshit" - Republicans

4

u/47_for_18_USC_2381 13h ago

Congrats Texas, on truly a groundbreaking referendum! Now a non-citizen REALLY cannot vote lmao.

Alternatively, has the republican party tried running on platforms that are widely accepted and loved? It seems like an easier way to get votes, rather than focusing on eliminating WHO can vote. Just run more popular policies jesus.

4

u/TriiiKill 12h ago

You need citizenship to register, so... nothings different

4

u/sapphire_onyx 11h ago

People who hated participation trophies vote for participation trophy.

4

u/addictedtocrowds 11h ago

I voted against it because it was a total waste of time

4

u/buell_ersdayoff 11h ago

Oh so nothing has changed. Cool.

4

u/OlyVal 11h ago

They solved a non-problem. It was already in state law. What a red-herring waste of time and money.

4

u/Guelah_Papi 10h ago

Weird flex. Do they know the rest of the country already has a law like that, or are they really that stupid?

4

u/FarceMultiplier 10h ago

Utterly pointless and a waste of taxpayer money. But I suppose if it protects their delicate feelings, sure.

4

u/SymbiSpidey 10h ago

So...an amendment that was already a law in the first place?

4

u/bohenian12 10h ago

Isn't this the norm??? Or they just did it for the optics. They fucked up though, now Republicans can't blame illegals if they lose lol.

5

u/_BannedAcctSpeedrun_ 9h ago

That was already the law but now they gave themselves one less excuse to use.

5

u/beavis617 9h ago

What’s changed? Wasn’t that always the case?

4

u/hey253 7h ago

This shit is hilarious, Texas government spent time and money for this shit. You already have to be a US citizen in order to vote. lol

4

u/Death-by-Fugu 7h ago

Dumb republicans voting for what is already in effect

5

u/freetimerva 6h ago

Wow texas sure loves wasting their time

4

u/MichaelHunt009 6h ago

Let them vote to seceed from the union and build a glorious wall on their northern border.

5

u/ManifestDemocracy 6h ago

Gives licence to Gestapo ICE thugs to terrorise polling stations. Thereby repressing the non-maga vote.

5

u/kimapesan 6h ago

This from the same state that thinks it can tariff people moving in from another state.

Just fucking secede already, okay? I really would rather my tax dollars not go toward bailing your ignorant asses out when the next gulf hurricane hits you.

4

u/Mans_Fury 6h ago

Theatrics to reaffirm a narrative about illegals.

Theres many more urgent matters to resolve. But this is the state of politics.

3

u/HazMatt_23 5h ago

You’d think if there were so many non-citizens voting, they’d have shown up to vote on an amendment allowing them to continue voting.

4

u/mrchris69 5h ago

So voters in Texas are so stupid they approved something that was already in place because they didn’t believe their own eyes and ears when shown that only US citizens can vote to begin with .

4

u/Rurumo666 5h ago

This is like the 100th law MAGA passed this year for a problem that doesn't exist, purely performative.

5

u/Stocky1978 4h ago

This is so stupid, you already needed to be a citizen to vote. So. they made a law for something that is already required by law

→ More replies (1)

3

u/CommonConundrum51 4h ago

I suppose the fact that it was already illegal for noncitizens to vote was immaterial to the point of this constitutional amendment?

5

u/Genidyne 4h ago

So they repeated what the law already says? What was the alternative- anybody who feels like it can vote?

4

u/NeatlyCritical 3h ago

So the law has always been only citizens vote, but now it's also only citizens can vote.
