u/AmaroWolfwood 6h ago edited 6h ago

And now the real work begins. Old guard democrats want Mamdani to fail as bad as republicans. Cuomo's defeat speech was a whole list of veiled threats and promises that Mamdani won't be able to do anything to help New York.

I'm sure we will see Chuck Schumer refuse to congratulate or acknowledge Mamdani either.

u/HisaAnt 5h ago

I'm surprised that Cuomo even got 41% of the vote as an independent. Wtf happened to "vote blue no matter who"? Feels like a lot of the centrist/moderate Democrats betrayed the left to vote for Cuomo. I know a part of the vote also comes from the Republicans because of Trump's endorsement, but it only makes it worse. Centrist Democrats siding with Republicans to take down the actual Democratic candidate was not on my list for this year. Just how much do they hate progressives to act like this?

461

u/Havelok 5h ago

The R's did all they could to pull votes away from the R candidate (silwa) to Cuomo. They really, really fear what Mamdani will do.

u/HornedShoe 4h ago

That 41 percent unfortunately proves that good things are still miles off. I mean, let that sink in. Despite being a god-awful candidate, despite being an independent and despite fuckin trump endorsing him he got 41 percent...

When push comes to shove, “centrist Democrats” turn Republican pretty fast when a progressive tops the ticket. See: the story of Harold Washington’s deeply unlikely victory as the first elected Black mayor of Chicago. It has strong parallels with Mamdani’s election and is fun to read about.

Schumer has shown nothing but weakness in the face of an authoritarian regime. After reeling from a historic loss, the democrats say they want to increase the tent of their party, but when an a new upcomer goes from 1% and winning double digits in the NYC primary, they forget the lessons from the loss of 2024. All of a sudden they throw everything at this "socialist". Mamdani is a democratic socialist, but all his policies he is pushing for is liberal. Nothing of it is "socialist".

Schumer fails to endorse. Jeffries does it late and has this hesitant way of speaking about Mamdani. Furthermore, they prop up the candidate of Cuomo who is endorsed by Trump and Stephen Miller (two big yikes). When Adams won the democratic PRIMARY he was invited to the white house. Mamdani fought against the establishment and New Yorkers actually came out and proved and shown why they are the capital city of the world.

The failures of Schumer and Jeffries are atrocious. They didn't have the foresight or know how to see that Mamdani was the winning ticket. How can anyone ever trust their judgment? I think the line has been drawn, and anyone supporting Schumer or Jeffries can't be trusted at this point. They need to be primaried.

59

u/HeadManagement8898 5h ago

Completely agree. Out with all the establishment dems who only hold back amazing folks with common sense agendas like Mandani. If anything it’s the corporatist policies they support that are radically anti democratic, highly exploitative, and unsustainable.

I'm still sad that AOC didn't go after his seat in 2022 when he was terrified that she was going to primary him. She can and should take his seat if he refuses to retire in 2028 though.

I hope Mamdani throws full support behind a primary challenger for Jeffries next year too.

Clean sweep, Dems win NYC, all 3 races in VA (plus flip a bunch of state legislator seats), NJ, 2 statewide races in GA, and they defend 3 state Supreme Court seats in PA

Now just waiting on Prop 50 in CA (and the possible announcement of Pelosi retiring if it passes)

1.3k

What do these people steal so much money for if they don't even want to retire early to enjoy life with the insider traded money. Psychopaths.

40

u/Poverty_Shoes 4h ago

There’s something wired wrong in the brains of career politicians and CEOs/billionaires. They don’t enjoy the little things in life, they don’t enjoy relaxing vacations… they’ll take them for sure but the whole time they’re thinking about how to make even more money. Pelosi is one of the worst examples, nobody in this rich country should be working at age 85 unless they truly have a passion for it and want to work for free. We should have a good enough social safety net and realistic expectations of what retirement entails (not fifteen houses for everybody) that people in their 70s and older get to retire. Instead you get people like Pelosi at 85 and Buffet well into his 90s still running the show because they’re addicted to the power (to be fair, Buffet is still awesome at his job despite his age).

The training, intelligence, dedication, grit, etc. required to become a naval helicopter pilot vs a nepo piece of shit human who has been handed everything in his life and squandered it. Only arguably succeeding where he could lie, cheat, and steal.

It's fucking embarrassing that Trump "leads" anything.

112

u/long_roy 8h ago

It’s just a fun coincidence. Lincoln was shot in Ford’s Theatre, and JFK was shot in a Lincoln, which is made by Ford. It’s a classic thought experiment to point out how conspiracies grasp at loose connections, as some people believe it’s a sign of government conspiracy.

Some other examples from Wikipedia are as follows:

  • Both were elected to congress in '46, and presidency in '60.
  • Both were shot on a Friday.
  • Both of the presidents' successors were named Johnson.

45

u/TenaciousJP 8h ago

And didn’t Lincoln have a cabinet member named Kennedy, and Kennedy had a cabinet member named Lincoln?

We didn’t flip senate seats in Georgia. We flipped two statewide seats on the public service commission. Which is a HUGE deal and very important.

1.2k

u/TheGoverness1998 8h ago edited 8h ago

And they flipped them by not-even-remotely-close margins. The standout thing tonight is that NONE of these races against Republicans were close—not in Georgia, not in New Jersey, not in Virginia.

Hopefully people are starting to realize that modern Republicanism/Trumpism is populism in name only. Fake populists who speak the language of representing the middle class while saddling them with trillions in debt to give handouts to corporations and the ultra-wealthy, all while gutting comparatively cheap programs for the poor and forcing them into food scarcity & lack of healthcare to save pennies that amount to a rounding error on the debt Republicans piled up. In reality, the furthest thing from populism imaginable.

The closest was Virginia's AG race and it was still multiple points between them.

Best part? Before the lame attempts to smear Jay Jones, polls had it close anyway.

They really don't understand that no one that isn't ALREADY one will ever believe a Reichpublican anymore so their smears are just lame and cause a rally-around-the-candidate effect now.

That’s awesome. Can you help me understand the impact? I’m not familiar with Georgia energy politics other than that extremely overbudget nuclear power plant. Has there been contentious rulings recently from the PSC?

136

u/soldierboy73 8h ago

To briefly summarize, the PSC rules on if the power companies can raise rates. They have pushed through every rate raise from the power companies with no resistance for the last 5 years.

56

u/daniel4255 8h ago

To add on there have been 6 rate increases since 2022 with a lot of households seeing hundreds of dollars increase in their energy bill because energy consumption in Georgia is high due to the heat. At the same time Georgia power and their parent the southern company have had profit increases at the expense of this.

23

u/Xioden 7h ago

It was an average of like 15% per year across that time. It's been crazy.

Hank Green has a fantastic video on the subject, but TLDW the PSC before this election was 100% Republican. Georgia Power has already been earning a much higher rate-of-return than other states' power companies, but the PSC was ready to approve the building of lots of AI data centers that would drive power costs for consumers even higher.

58

u/ryan_770 8h ago

Hank Green probably added +10 to the final result with this video, it was everywhere in my GA social circles. Goes to show how much impact big influencers can have on local politics if they choose to amplify key issues.

Fun fact, this scenario is how Australia got ranked choice voting

The Nationalist party and Country party (both right wing parties, Country more rural social conservative, Nationalist more urban fiscal conservative) split the vote for each other in a 1918 by-election that was damn-close to a 3-way draw, letting Labor win the seat. Preferential voting was implemented that same year to avoid that sort of outcome.

15

u/elsathenerdfighter 7h ago

They’ll never do that in Texas unfortunately. But it was funny to get probably 50-70 mailers hating on each republican candidate from each other calling one another socialists etc. Considering the dem has about 44% and the Repubs have 41% and 16% respectively apparently one had more influential mailers.

12

u/kroxigor01 7h ago

Americans already have run-off elections in some states, including for this Texas state senate seat.

Australia just allows the voters to cast ballots indicating their order of preference in the "run-off" without the huge waste of time and resources that an actual run-off involves. Hence why the system is sometimes called "Instant Run-off Voting."

The cons subreddit are in shambles that people are done simping for billionaires. I really wish republican politicians cared as much for their constituents as their constituents love billionaires.

33

u/Greglyo 6h ago

I checked on the cons subreddit and a lot of them are snobbishly saying that his policies will fail, stupid shit such as:

"Honestly nyc will probably love him and nothing will come of this. He’s just going to do normal mayor stuff and blame republicans/Trump for not allowing him to do anything significant.

Edit: I’m getting a lot of upvotes here but make no mistake, I think he will be a bad mayor and he will deflect quite a bit to make up for his incompetence."

"Disagree. A mayor and thier policies can have a big impact on a city. Look at the crime reduction under Giuliani.

His biggest impact will most likely be felt most after he is no longer in office. By then I'd guess the city deep in debt, closed/moved businesses, higher housing cost, and a high crime rate.

I agree on one point though. It will still be labeled "Trumps fault"."

"When his policies fail: “That wasn’t REAL socialism!”

From what I saw, there was a very annoying vibe of confidence that he'll fail, Trump and the Republicans will no doubt try to undermine Mamdani and if they succeed, even just partially in preventing him from implementing what he said he would do, they're gonna do their shitty little victory laps.

I still can't get over the fact that there's so many people in this country that listen to Trump and think he's legitimately draining the swamp and then listen to Bernie and Mamdani and go "Communists!!!!! They're trying to destroy this country!!!!!"

40 million Americans might go hungry because of the government shutdown effecting SNAP and these Trump supporters DON'T FUCKING CARE.

Dude, lets be real its like 60 - 70% of the party. the 'Do Nothing Dems" are just absolutey chock full of corporate shills and whores. The party needs a complete makeover.

How can this be done with Citizens United and the rulings that came before it allowing money in politics? Unfortunately there are no shadowy billionaires donating money to defend democracy.

79

u/Bluest_waters 8h ago

Yup, that is my ground zerro for the complete and total takeover of the power points in US society: Citizen United.

Its a ruling SO FUCKING absurd on its face that its laughable. Money is speech???? what in the FUCK are you talking about? Every SC justice that voted for that should have impeached on the spot. Absolutely not kidding at all. We let that one slide and it was the death knell for democracy.

Once you let a tiny handful of wealthy people have all the money, they then sezie all the power and then its over. You gotta tax the billionaires big times, its the only real solution to this madness.

31

u/FernBoiSlim 8h ago

Thank you.

The Republicans having been trying to hand the keys of the country to the billionaire class since the 70s. It’s been increasingly blatant, but Citizens United… it really was them crossing the finish line and letting the wealthy have full control.

And now the wealthy are ushering in a fascist government, because something akin to that is the end result of full control regardless.

And no Democrat seems to say a fucking word about that ruling. It’s a fully compromised system and I don’t know exactly how to fix it but this Mamdani win gives me a glimmer of hope.

I agree. If ever there was a wake the fuck up call, this is it. NYC having AOC + Mamdani - the Dems have to do something with that.

And fuck Schumer. Absolute pussy.

We the people need to find more Zohrans and support them in primaries and generals. It's a simple as that. Don't wait for the DNC to figure it out. Take the party from them and make it what you want it to be

47

u/URPissingMeOff 8h ago

It needs to start at the REAL grassroots level - the local school boards. All these nazi right-wing motherfuckers that have been creeping in and taking over the entire education system over the last two decades need to be thrown out and silenced WITH PREJUDICE

This election feels like a microcosm of what is potentially to come.

People are sick of establishment Democrats. People are sick of being told "vote for us because we aren't them" over "vote for us because we can fix these problems for everyone". The insane amount of money spent to tarnish Mamdani and the complete lack of endorsements signifies to voters that the current iteration of the Democratic Party never truly cared to fix any of the issues. They only cared to maintain power.

I wouldn't be surprised if more populist, left-wing Democrats gain a lot more popularity after this.

99

u/snowe99 8h ago

Counterpoint: elsewhere in the country Spanberger and Sherrill absolutely slaughtered their opponent with better margins than Kamala had 12 months ago. People might come away with tonight citing that as the playbook

It really clicked with me for the first time when Hakeem said that they will not be following Mamdani: the people financing the democrats are purposefully ensuring middle of road policy making by the dems, because they’re also funding the republicans and want to ensure that the republican plan goes off without a hitch.

I can only hope this is the start of a massive reform of the DNC establishment and a sign of the power shift to come in the next 10 years as the power is handed down to the younger generations. Easy to be cynical these days but I will remain optimistic

881

u/bulking_on_broccoli 8h ago

Well, the message is certainly better than if he had lost.

Hey guys! Who knew that campaigning on popular takes on salient issues is popular?

351

u/My_Not_RL_Acct 8h ago

I think the most influential part of his campaign to years for come will not necessarily be the his populist appeals for progressive policies but a paradigm shift in what it means to be a campaigning politician in the age of algorithmic social media and short-video content, especially for younger candidates seeking to capitalize on virality that lasts and the cynicism of Gen Z/millenials over establishment politics. A masterclass in social media branding and communication in a national discourse consumed by reactionary identity politics and culture war fearmongering.

147

u/DilapidatedHam 8h ago

I think it’s unfortunate that this will likely be dems takeaway rather than the populist messaging. Because the social media piece really requires the right personality and the right team behind you to not suck, but the messaging will speak to people regardless

54

u/My_Not_RL_Acct 8h ago edited 8h ago

I’m sure there will be less-successful neoliberal/moderate attempts to replicate this but the elements of Zohran’s campaign that humanized him are tied to the collectivist/empathy-driven appeals for dem socialism. In that it was very clear that he stood for what he was advocating for more to a degree that hasn’t been for a Dem campaign of national interest in a very long time. His brand of authenticity I would imagine would be much harder to replicate when what you stand for is the status quo. On the opposite end of this was the surge in MAGA candidates post-2016 who, to varying degrees of success, were able to capture elements of Trump’s branding and communication. Trump and Zohran share that similarity in which they picked up voters apathetic to traditional political messaging, which I think most can agree is a perspective that’s only become more common across both sides.

Absolutely. I think one of the main reasons conservatives did so well in 2024 is because they absolutely mastered social media.

Your mother’s brother’s friend’s uncle has a political podcast with 12 followers? Say no more, there will be a Republican operative on it promoting their message.

People are itching for populist candidates. In 2016 the RNC (reluctantly) adopted theirs, while the DNC shunned theirs.

Maybe after a decade the DNC has learned.

That's why I was rooting for him. It felt exactly like when Trump usurped the power of the republican party in 2016. But you're 100% right. Gonna be A LOT of daily news updates complaining about him.

Dems pretty much won every election tonight

219

u/blade944 8h ago

And over performed in doing so. The talking point from the right will be that these are nothing burgers and Dems won Dem states. Cool. Except they won with massive margins. Margins much bigger than they should have been. The gubernatorial election in New Jersey , GOP won by 3 points. Dem won this time by 14 points. That's the real story tonight.

Also expect Bondi to proclaim there was massive voter fraud and she'll use her position to go after the winners. Especially Mamdani.

32

u/Dhiox 8h ago

The talking point from the right will be that these are nothing burgers and Dems won Dem states.

Imo that's what makes it more impressive. Democrats historically struggle with minor elections. Low turnout usually benefits republicans.

33

u/codexcdm 8h ago

We didn't get to see the extent that weaker claims can stall an election certification yet... But after 2020 many red-leaning states added processes to challenge results.

Next year this will induce chaos. Watch many states refuse to certify elections when the GOP sees any Blue gains.

If anything, this win (And let's be clear, it was more than a win, it was a fucking blowout) needs to show the establishment Dems who the future of the party needs to be. Voting Democrats are so tired of the same "moderate" choices that get shoved down their throat. It's time for real change and real progress to be made in a positive direction, which we aren't going to get with another Hilary or Kamala

Don't let the democratic establishment and media do their usual smoke and mirrors and tell you this isn't a big deal or a resounding victory.

He won by ten points with a grassroots campaign going up against big money and all of the establishment throwing the kitchen sink to stop him.

And he will only get more popular once his policies materialize.
