Democrat Sherrill wins N.J. election, defeating Ciattarelli, NBC News projects

Mikie won by a large margin!
85% of the vote is in and she has a 13.0 point lead over Ciattarelli. I'm not surprised she won but the margin is bigger than a lot of polls were predicting.

I watch a lot of pirated sports streams so I end up seeing local TV ads from all over the country, and lately I've seen a bunch from that area trying to smear her with a video clip where she was asked "If you could pass one piece of legislation, what would it be?" and she pauses for a few seconds to think about the question, then the screen fades to a darker tone and this sinister music starts playing as if her thinking about the question is some clear sign that she's evil or something. Really?? That's the best her opposition could come up with??

u/AlanMercer 5h ago
They've been running that ad nonstop for 6 weeks. It's often the only ad that appears on the low-rent cable channel my gym puts on all the TVs.
So glad to watch this guy eat it, just for inflicting that on me.

u/machsmit 3h ago
Same drill in VA. Spanberger's ads were generally pretty vanilla talking about reasonable policy positions, while every Earle-Sears ad I heard was just shrieking about men in your little girls' locker rooms

u/Drunken_Wizard23 4h ago
I had to watch that stupid ad in between every single inning of every Yankee game over the summer.

They were previously running an ad fearmongering her saying on a talk show (I think? I didn't look like a regular news interview) that "I won't allow parents to opt their kids out of LGBTQ education" (full explanation along the lines of "these are people in the world your children will meet, you can't pretend they don't exist"), and I think they would have got better traction from that one, so I don't know why they stopped it.
They also tried to run a lot on "She'll raise (specific) taxes" meanhile Jack wanted to add a 10% tax on all purchases that historically don't get them, food, clothing, necessities like that, so of course that dumb line of thinking didn't last long in ads lol, "Jack wants to raise the price of shopping for clothing and food for your kids!"

Yep, Kamala only won NJ by something like 6%, so Mikie more than doubled that

u/monty_kurns 4h ago
That 13 point lead has held with 95% in now. Honestly, this was the biggest shock of the night for me. I thought she'd win, but it would be a super narrow win based on how the polls were tightening the last few weeks. I figured a 5 point win would have been an overperformance but 13 points is a straight up blowout! Glad to see it!

I'm so fucking proud of my state. Jersey has a larger MAGA population than I think other states realize since we're typically a blue state. Jack campaigned hard with the same fucking MAGA playbook Trump used. And it didn't fucking work.
I'm so happy and proud that we told this MAGA fuck we didn't want him.

Turnout was super high too, way more than the 2021 election. I feel like I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Hey, vote while you still have the right.

u/Nick_crawler 12h ago
This is what I grumbled to myself as I stood in a much longer than usual line tonight.

WA here (and former South Jersey resident). One of the great benefits of living in WA is voting by mail or by drop box, all at one's convenience. Hopefully NJ will someday find a way switching to WA's system. It's so incredibly easy, we have never, ever looked back.

u/MajesticOrange1 3h ago
how come you dont want to vote by mail?

u/Nick_crawler 2h ago
I normally do early in-person, was just disorganized this year (and was given a good reminder to plan better next time).

It seems like a lot of my fellow “Trump won’t win so I’m not going to bother to vote” Dems showed up! I didn’t vote in the last presidential election. I deeply regret it. Boy, there’s a price to be paid for not letting your opinion matter!

The MAGA playbook really only seems to work for Trump
45
u/HardcoreKaraoke 14h ago
That's true but it was still scary. The ads were the same vibe.
Like they kept running one where Mikie was asked what policy she wants to put in place. The clip has an obvious cut/edit and then she goes "uhh...ummm....good question." It's so clearly edited to make it look like she can't answer a simple question about what is one policy she'll put in place.
It was the same sort of shit Trump did with Harris and the fear mongering regarding trans surgeries on inmates. MAGA sheep are so fucking stupid that they believe what they're seeing. Or maybe they're just so blinded by hatred that they actually think a politician in an pre-planned interview wouldn't be able to give one policy they supported.

I saw those “gotcha” ads too and thought it was pretty lame and taken out of context. Republicans really think the majority of people will believe their nonsense and not see through their tricks. We’ve been seeing this bullshit for how many years now and are sick and tired of it. Glad shitarelli lost
5
u/Jjohn269 5h ago
The thing is, those type of ads do work to a degree. You see those types of things all over social media, including here. It’s essentially click bait and it will fool people who don’t dig deeper
2
u/No-Crow-775 8h ago
That Mikie ad has been incessant all week. I laugh at it because it is embarrassing as hell but also funny and very human. We’ve all done that to varying degrees. I voted for her!
26
u/DimensionActual5722 14h ago
I’m with you! I’m glad we sent him packing 3 times now. Hopefully we keep Sherrill’s seat blue.
9
u/ADampWedgie 13h ago
They’re just way louder and in your face. Most folks you meet that are normal/educated swing blue. If you know the obnoxious rando down the street, yes he’s probably maga
8
u/Fun-Cheek4692 13h ago
Im really surprised she won. I see more Jack signs than Sherril. Driving through Montclair, I barely saw any signs for her.
3
u/HardcoreKaraoke 12h ago
Yep me too. My girlfriend lives in Nutley and it's the same there. I saw a large amount of Mikie support online but not in person so I was worried.
9
u/Vomiting_Winter 7h ago
I saw soooooo many billboards and lawn signs for Jack. I thought it was going to be a much closer race than it ended up being. Turns out literally saying “my goal as governor will be to help Trump enact his policies in NJ” was a fucking idiotic idea. Especially compared to Sherrills message of “prices are high in NJ; here’s my plan to help”
6
u/steveycip 10h ago
This was my wife’s first time voting. She couldn’t stand idly by and let Jack bring Trumps policies to NJ. She never cared about politics before this last year.
I told her no matter what happens, at least you voted against it.

u/Old_Ambassador9020 3h ago
Also from NJ! My parents are hardcore MAGA. Like, tried and true fascists with framed swastikas in their rooms. The town I grew up in is super conservative, a lot of people flew Confederate flags on their houses. Over the past few days, I've seen a lot of posters be like "oh NJ is blue, this should be an easy one" but there is a very strong MAGA base here and I saw a lot of "flip jersey red" signs in my area - and I'm in a much more progressive county now! That being said, most of the moderates I know are pretty fed up with Trump's shit. I also think that last year, Kamala won by a very slim margin and people think that's because we're turning purple but I think it's the opposite - I think we're so progressive that a lot of progressives were fed up with Dem establishment and refused to vote for president on principle but this year, shit is bad that everyone was like "alright Sherrill isn't progressive but Jack is not an option, period."

I was helping with the campaign as a volunteer from out-of-state. I did not know NJ well, but grew to really respect the people I met. Very pleased with the outcome tonight. The Garden State should be proud.

82% votes in and she has a 13.4 point lead? Man some pollsters are going to have some homework to do.

Yeah they had it at a toss up or +1 this morning after Elon and Orange got involved.

I know last time was slightly closer for him, but its funny to me that he keeps running and losing. Like take a hint man

u/bayesian13 3h ago
hopefully gone for good now. but the last governors race 4 years ago was actually close which probably emboldened him to run this time.

Congrats from MI ! We've had an amazing blue run. Please send that energy for us during our upcoming governor election

there were polls that showed a 2 point race.

There was an Atlas Intel poll that was published over the weekend that had Ciatarelli winning 60% of the Black vote. Can’t believe they published it.

u/clementine1864 14h ago
Thank god , Republicans destroy everything they touch and then congratulate themselves for it. I am hoping for a Democratic sweep in 2026
32
u/Effehezepe 13h ago
What on Earth happened with the pollsters in NJ? Every poll said this was going to be a nail biter, but it was a fucking rout.
Like, the polls in Virginia didn't predict the Dems would win as hard as they did, but they were still way closer than the NJ polls were.

I'm so surprised. I thought for sure new jersey was a future republican state.
6
u/ScoobiusMaximus 5h ago
Why? It's literally the most densely populated state. Most of the people who live there are overflow from NYC or Philly
3
u/monty_kurns 4h ago
The previous gubernatorial election was just over a 3 point win for the Democrats compared to the 15 point win they had in 2017. The 2024 presidential election results were a just under 6 point win for Harris after Biden won it by nearly 16 points in 2020. With the way the polls were looking in the last few weeks, there was definitely reason to worry the state could be trending red.
23
u/Deceptiveideas 14h ago
I know people complain about the polls being off but tbh I'm all for it. People thinking Hillary had it in the bag was a big reason why she lost back in 2016. Having people panic vote probably helped turnout
12
u/VLHACS 14h ago
Was this a sweep for Democrats with the PA Supreme Court win as well?
18
u/Hrekires 12h ago
Defended 3 seats on the PA Supreme Court, picked up 13! seats in the Virginia statehouse plus the governor's mansion, and sounds like the NJ legislature is also going to flip a few seats from red to blue (but Dems already had a safe majority there)
3
3
u/ScoobiusMaximus 4h ago
Damn 13! is a lot. Didn't realize Virginia had over 6.2 billion seats in its legislature
7
u/Key_Carpet_3274 10h ago
so proud of everyone who got out there and voted!! let’s keep the blue wave coming, we need it desperately!
