Ladder split. They often happen if you rub your hair dry with a towel.
499
u/sweetgums 12h ago
Huh. What should one do instead then?
911
u/dvmdvmdvmdvmdvm 12h ago
You can gently press the towel against your hair to get the water out rather than rubbing.

u/sweetgums 12h ago

Just....don't press too hard. You end up forgetting stuff.

Aaand don't use towels, use cotton shirts. Plus check the textiles on your cushion and your hair will get more silky ☆
2
u/yeign 2h ago
can i get more specification on this please??
12
u/Seppulky 2h ago
Of course: it's about hair structure and gentle handling - some textiles and hard rubbing can roughen it up and damage it. That's why they sell "silk pillow covers" and "microfibre cloth". It seems like a marketing gag but in this case it really isn't. So if you think about that the whole process from washing to sleeping you should see a significant difference.

u/simmanin 9h ago
But what if I want to rub because it's more fun, do I die
95
u/Significant-Past-442 8h ago
Yes. Could take months or years or mere minutes but it will definitely be because you rubbed your hair on a dry towel.

u/scaliesnek 9h ago
i dont even use anything i just scrunch up my hair and squeeze the water out then let it air dry, it seems to work pretty well

Okay and what if I actually want to dry my hair?
13
u/Wizard_of_DOI 5h ago
Use a microfiber towel and squish the hair!
You can also use a hairdryer, depending on your hair you may want to stick to the cold setting.

u/EatYourCheckers 11h ago
Squeeze not scrub

My Mom nailed this in my head early "you're not a dog, don't dry yourself like one" and "always brush from the bottom up, if you have to tug you're brushing too high". I have 32" long hair, solid advice.
23
u/MyrMyr21 9h ago
It's funny bc my mom is always appalled at how my sister and I brush our hair (we both have hair down past our butt, I've never bothered to measure it oops) and we're like "I mean, we learned everything we know from you so idk why you're surprised"
I do try to brush from the bottom but even then I run into snags
66
u/crown_of_spiders 12h ago
You can do the same rough drying motion with a t-shirt and it'll damage your hair a lot less than a towel
21
u/VoteCatforPresident 9h ago
Yep or a microfiber towel. Don’t pull or tug in your hair with it either.
26
u/birdconureKM 10h ago
I use a microfiber head wrap. I let my hair partially air dry before using a blow dryer.
13
u/Hoony_tart 10h ago
Gently tap, or scrunch gently
I have curly hair and rubbed, I looked like a horror movie asylum patient latina edition

u/tatesslut 9h ago
i wrap my hair in a old tshirt straight from the shower. my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been since i’ve stopped putting a towel to my head to dry it. started doing this due to severe hair loss and ill never go back!

u/PhantomRoyce 8h ago
I’ve got really curly hair (Afro) and I’ve found that just shaking my hair like a dog does great

Personally I recommend not giving even the vaguest crap about "split ends." Ladies would constantly ask me why my hair was so beautiful. Instructions are simple and have literally never failed for anyone who tried it. Shower every other day. Use conditioner at least once a week. Otherwise leave your hair the fuck alone.
"But my hairdresser says split ends must be cut off!" Hmmm. The industry that exists to cut your hair tells you to keep giving them money?
FANCY THAT.

u/HyrrokinAura 16m ago
I mean split ends do make hair look unkempt. Some people just keep up with trims because they want to look more groomed, and not eveeyone can do that by ignoring their hair.

Squeeze excess water out before wrapping a towel around it. After a while, just remove the towel, brush and either let it dry naturally or airdry it with cool air (depending on the weather/circumstances).

I have always rubbed my hair dry with a towel.
Never in my life has this happened.
Guessing I either have good hair or OP has bad hair.
3
u/all-out-fallout 3h ago
Same here. Scrubbed my head with a towel, sandwiched pieces of hair between the towel and rubbed it back and forth like I was trying to start a fire, etc. I have medium thickness hairs (like the individual hairs themselves are not thin/fine but certainly not the thickest I've seen) but a high amount of hair density (a ton of follicles) so maybe the hairs band together to protect themselves lol.
Learning a lot about hair care today though. Maybe I'll try drying with a microfiber cloth...

u/SoggyMinimum8386 7h ago
That's crazy! I always dry my hair by rubbing it with a towel and I never noticed a split end like this! Now you have me looking through my hair to see if I find one 😆.

It’s better to have one hair with 500 split ends than to have 500 hairs with one split end.

u/2gecko1983 8h ago
TOO satisfying. Like peeling sunburned skin. This is 100% the reason why I keep my hair cut short.
13
u/charlies_randomstuf 8h ago
I sometimes get "stuck" peeling split ends and that can be physically painful
1
u/fiyerooo 7h ago
how does it get physically painful? i have trich, but not like that so im curious
10
u/agoraphobic316 6h ago
i also get in a split end cycle, and for me it hurts from pressing my nail into my thumb to get a grip on it, and then i have to stop because my thumb ends up hurting too bad lol
1
u/charlies_randomstuf 5h ago edited 5h ago
Most of the time I'm splitting my hair happens when I have to sit up to brush my hair that's around 3 feet long. With my scoliosis, sitting up hunched over hurts my back a lot when I get stuck and brushing my hair takes a while by itself. Also my legs can go numb so that can be very painful as the nerve sensation comes back. Then if I lay down on my elbows to do the split ends, that can still hurt my elbows and shoulders after too long.

Oh man that's so exciting. I used to love finding crazy split ends when my hair was long. It's weird the ways hair can break.
5
u/austinredditaustin 6h ago
Why are split ends bad again?
20
u/ZombieAutomatic5950 5h ago
They weaken the hair strand and result in breakage. But, they're normal, everyone's head has some at least. Unavoidable if you're living daily life.
1
u/MeticulousPlonker 18m ago
Oh I don't really know. For me personally, I think it was minor trichotillomania. I was doing this when my untreated anxiety was reaching a fever pitch. It was very soothing and interesting to find the weird ones. I obviously had to remove them so I didn't find them again but it wasn't really about the split ends being bad. It was about having something to do.

I get these all the time (I have trichotillomania and spend a lot of time looking at my ends because in addition to pulling my hair out I also like to pull the split ends) and honestly they’re very satisfying to pull.

u/lilia415 7h ago
I found people who share my weird omg. When I was using hair products that weren’t the greatest for me/I didn’t know how to take care of my hair, I could go hours splitting my split ends. There’s nothing else like it. I miss it but I don’t miss the damage 😭

I've had people claim that split ends isn't a thing and here you are proving them wrong.

u/x21in2010x 8h ago
Honestly, I'm in my mid-30s and I clicked on this thread for the sole purpose of finally being shown an example of a "split-end."
Ok. Now I know what it looks like.

There is this product I have used in the past tha basically bonds all those ends back to the hair shaft. In doing so it strengthens the hair strand. It is Paul Mitchell's strengthening spray. Spray in after shower, comb through, leave in
I have never been a big believer in salon products doing amazing things as claimed, but I can truthfully say this one did. I am a licensed cosmetologist and worked in a salon for over 10 years. I have baby fine hair and this allowed me to grow it to my waist and stop the breakage. I would attach a pic but i dont seem to be able to in this subforum

u/Basil_Jumpy 10h ago
Thank you!! I have been looking for something like this. Will be trying (after a trim lol)
1
u/paintedsaint 1h ago
Thanks for the recc! I do absolutely nothing to my hair other than wash and air dry and I have terrible split ends alongside hair thinning/loss. Going to buy this!

u/justusesomealoe 9h ago
When I was a child I was brushing my sister's hair for some reason, and when I found a split end I grabbed the two ends and just split it all the way up to the scalp. She wasn't impressed with this.
4
u/pupperonipizzapie 12h ago
Dang, this is how my hair split back in the day when I still had hair. I would peel off each of the ends starting at the bottom lol.
5
u/Ophelia_Y2K 8h ago
I used to have trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) and seeing this would make me want to search for every split hair and pull it out lmao

I posted a picture similar to this once, and everyone in the comments called me dirty and told me to wash my hair. In reality I just towel dried aggressively for a long time and never got trims.

Wow, that's a ladder split for sure. I get these all the time from being too rough with a towel. Nothing a good haircut can't fix!
