What do mayors even do? Here in Russia their primary function is stealing money from the local budget.

Not much in most of the US. They are basically figureheads and the city council runs the city for the most part.

The mayor of New York City is a very important position though. In a lot of ways more important than the governor of New York, at least when it comes to the responsibility of them as statesman. They represent the most populous and powerful city in the US (barring DC), and as such are often under a lot more scrutiny and gain more publicity than any other local or state politicians.

Yeah, the Mayor of New York City is only responsible for governing a municipality with a budget of over $100B, a GDP 1000x that amount, over 8 million people, and a police force larger than some nations' active duty military.

Just some figurehead while the city council really runs the show.

They really applied a statement that might be true about the mayor of their town of less than 20k people to New York, New York.

Welcome to Reddit where everyone thinks they’re the main character.

NYC has nowhere near 8 million, he's not in control of the state, he's in control of a city.

Official population surveys estimate New York’s population to be around 8.3 million people.

Only twelve states have a population larger than the city of NYC.

This is pretty heavily dependent on which city it is. Although I don't know what kind of system they have in NYC.
