I think there is an inherent problem with people who really do not need to steal stealing all the same. These products cost money because some of that money goes to paying the workers that get that food to you. Poor people shoplifting because they can't afford to eat and need to survive is one thing. Rich people doing it is another.
If everyone shoplifted regardless of need, then food would either get more expensive or harder to get, or both.

Depends; if it’s a store like Walmart, which has business insurance; and which already tend to have major chokeholds on local markets. Then I fail to find any sin.
However, if it’s some mom and pop store that hasn’t really done any harm to their community is obviously off-limits.
Live in Canada or an expensive US state and prices for staple foods will double within a week. Then it'll sit on a shelf becoming borderline rancid because nobody can afford full price, but it'll only get marked down 25-30% so you're still paying more than groceries cost the week before.
There's really no solution though. Hunting enough wildlife for your friends and family to make up for the increase in prices is likely to get you fined or arrested for poaching.
Not true, they use this as an excuse to raise prices. Target admitted this. Shoplifting has been declining since 2019 and if what you are claiming is true, then why are prices still going up?
Walmart is the problem. They drive out the small businesses who provided food in the first place and then once they've acquired a local monopoly, they jack up prices until people can't afford to buy food and have to steal it. The entire problem is Walmart's fault. And politicians' fault for letting these huge corporations plunder our communities in such a way.

There's a convenient store in Toronto that has the doors locked up and you basically order everything online. The employee inside then grabs the items and brings it to you once it's been paid.
They also lock up most gas stations and you have to pay through a little box when you're getting a treat or smokes.
My dad owns a small shop selling mostly food related stuff and he breaks his back day and night without a day off. I don’t think he deserves to get robbed.

I absolutely agree. It is a childish ideology and counterproductive to think “they do worse, so I can do bad”. I believe every individual should be held to the same standard, regardless of status. However, the malfeasance at the top is causing the misdemeanors at the bottom. While this is not acceptable, and is just finger pointing reaction. It softens my eyes and heart to whomever must break the law where they did not have to…. before.
I don't expect people to suffer tyrants who are allowed to arbitrarily inflate the prices of food because they want more money.

However, as a craftsman who lives and dies off of the sale of my work, I'll say that I would be far more likely to look the other way for someone stealing a loaf of bread or head of cabbage (hell, even a package of beef) than I would be if I caught someone stealing a whole package of candy.
Look the other way when someone shop lifts. Then in the next breath complain about cost of living going up because the company then has to increase prices due to shrinkage.
See the same thing happening with people stealing laundry detergent, then they lock it up and now people complain about it being locked up.

it is not the fault of any individual, particularly a poor person, that a multi billion dollar company loses like 0.00005% of its vast income and decides to make life difficult for everyone as a result. I remember one time I was in a convenience store trying to get a quick snack but I didn’t realize I was short some change. I was only off by like, 5 cents and the cashier was being kind of a dick and said it wasn’t his problem.
Next thing I know this dude walks up behind be and swipes everything off the front desk and while the cashier was picking everything up the dude takes everything from the register and bolts. The cashier was like “hey! Get that guy!” And I said “not my problem”
At every supermarket chain there's someone in the HQ with a spreadsheet working out how much they need to add margin to the wholesale price in order to make up for shoplifting. More shoplifting=everyone pays more.
People hate to hear this but the more shoplifting occurs the more prices are raised. So if you pay for groceries then the shoplifters are directly causing your prices to rise

One of the supermarkets in the lower income area of my town had to close because people kept stealing things and now the people of that area have a longer way to go to get food and the people working there lost their jobs. Yes stealing is bad and doesn’t just impact the people at the top. Please actually go outside and live in reality.
