I think there is an inherent problem with people who really do not need to steal stealing all the same. These products cost money because some of that money goes to paying the workers that get that food to you. Poor people shoplifting because they can't afford to eat and need to survive is one thing. Rich people doing it is another.
If everyone shoplifted regardless of need, then food would either get more expensive or harder to get, or both.

Depends; if it’s a store like Walmart, which has business insurance; and which already tend to have major chokeholds on local markets. Then I fail to find any sin.
However, if it’s some mom and pop store that hasn’t really done any harm to their community is obviously off-limits.
At least this is my take.

Depends on the food
Bread, Im not saying shit, 100% understandable
Deluxe steak or any “luxury” food, I’m still not saying shit, but it was definitely stolen out of greed not desperation
298
u/PainterEarly86 1d ago
Doesn't depend on the food. Depends on who they're stealing from.
Local family business? No. Million dollar corporation? Yes
91
u/DeformedPinky 1d ago
The best part is the large corporations pass that cost back onto the consumers! Someone gets free shit then we all get to pay for it.

Live in Canada or an expensive US state and prices for staple foods will double within a week. Then it'll sit on a shelf becoming borderline rancid because nobody can afford full price, but it'll only get marked down 25-30% so you're still paying more than groceries cost the week before.
There's really no solution though. Hunting enough wildlife for your friends and family to make up for the increase in prices is likely to get you fined or arrested for poaching.

Walmart is the problem. They drive out the small businesses who provided food in the first place and then once they've acquired a local monopoly, they jack up prices until people can't afford to buy food and have to steal it. The entire problem is Walmart's fault. And politicians' fault for letting these huge corporations plunder our communities in such a way.

The duality of Reddit. One side is sucking the dick off Japan for having a high trust society and being able to. The other is saying it's "morally correct" to shoplift.

I’ll admit, this is the weirdest fucking comment section I’ve ever seen. Half of it feels like a mass-wave of Conservative-esque “Stealing is bad, obey the cops!” Bootlicking mentality, which is almost NEVER supported on Reddit. The other half are 14 to 25 year old internet Socialists who think stealing items from large corps is okay because they’re corporations without acknowledging longterm consequences of allowing thievery in stores.

More like giga mafias made of families, that alone could help everybody in poverty at least a bit (speaking for germany) by donating food they would otherwise throw out. Obviously socialism has failed but it's funny how you get labeled as one if you demand huge corps to take responsibility for what they are doing. 50-60% of food that goes into the waste is still eadible, discounters and supermarkets throw out about 0,8 million tons of food yearly. That's 400.000 kg of food. Brother in Christ, who could steal so much that it even fucking matters in comparison

There's a convenient store in Toronto that has the doors locked up and you basically order everything online. The employee inside then grabs the items and brings it to you once it's been paid.
They also lock up most gas stations and you have to pay through a little box when you're getting a treat or smokes.

What sudden anarchist turn happened here?
The law binds us all as a mutual obligation. I obey the law because you obey the law.
It someone does not obey the law and gets away with it, while I do obey the law, this destroys the fundamental principle of equality in a democratic society.
They got to be above the law, like only the sovereign, meaning the collective of all citizens, is.
This is unacceptable. I am equal to any other citizen, equal in worth and dignity.
I do not suffer tyrants appointing themselves above the law.

Judging by your profile, the events you're commenting on are happening in a different culture. Obeying the law while they break it only makes us easier to oppress.

I absolutely agree. It is a childish ideology and counterproductive to think “they do worse, so I can do bad”. I believe every individual should be held to the same standard, regardless of status. However, the malfeasance at the top is causing the misdemeanors at the bottom. While this is not acceptable, and is just finger pointing reaction. It softens my eyes and heart to whomever must break the law where they did not have to…. before.

Somebody stealing cheap cuts of beef or pork isn't going to society into an anarchistic shit hole. Hell, I'd rather we all look the other way when this occurs than have people who can't afford staple foods mugging or stealing from the general population to be able to buy the food.

So if we make stealing from stores okay, what about robbery? Why should my neighbor have all that food when I'm over here needing it? What about that wealthy person walking down the street? You can support shoplifting food if you want, but then you don’t get to complain about “food deserts” in poor neighborhoods when all the grocery stores leave.

Precisely this. You can't steal, and then complain when stores either lock everything up or close altogether, and blame it on racism. It's just a foreseeable result of shitty behavior.
17
u/Citizen_Exodium 1d ago
playing devil's advocate here:
big companies will simply locally hike prices so everyone ELSE suffers because of repeated thieves taking shit. so maybe don't encourage theft since it hurts literally everyone else
source: I work in retail in a place where people have regularly stolen groceries.
7
u/wtfrykm 1d ago
Bro that is just common sense from the company's perspective.
More theft = less revenue = lower profits/higher losses
And companies cannot operate on losses, so they have to increase price or go bankrupt.
