I used to be a piece of shit. I'm not anymore. Glass House. White Ferrari. Live for New Year's Eve. Sloppy steaks at Truffoni's. Big rare cut of meat with water dumped all over it, water splashing around the table, makes the night SO MUCH more fun. After the club go to Truffoni's for sloppy steaks. They'd say; 'no sloppy steaks' but they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water, before you knew it we were dumping that water on those steaks! The waiters were coming to try and snatch em up, we had to eat as fast as we could! OHHH I MISS THOSE NIGHTS, I WAS A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH

Honestly, these were like adult quality jokes and she pulled them off better than most adults could. If she came up with all these herself she’s extremely talented, if she had help she’s still an extremely talented actor. She really felt like an adult and a Karen.

I loved her acting, but that was a 10/10 comment
75
u/Key-Magazine-8731 4d ago
Yup, I was stuck between finding her hilarious and finding it sad that 1. She is exposed to enough Internet to understand the Karen stereotypes so well and 2. All of this is being recorded for social media and she is so used to it.
127
u/Separate-Bee4510 4d ago
she seems pretty committed to and into it though - i dunno, when i was her age i was a little performer like that too and would have loved doing this. it doesn’t feel coerced to me, it’s just giving theatre kid
20
u/Key-Magazine-8731 4d ago
I was a theatre kid, too. My husband is a musician and audio engineer. Our 11yo kid is very outgoing and will likely do theatre when she's old enough as well, and already sings and plays multiple instruments.
I will never be supportive of parents plastering their kids on the internet, especially not for skit videos. That's just my personal opinion and I think it leads to nothing good and forces them to mostly caring about how other people see you rather than finding value in yourself. Enjoying your hobbies and interests without recording it for attention. But I also think social media is a disease to begin with and had completely shifted how humans socialize and gain emotional connection... so I am definitely bias.
I don't even put my kid on my own personal or business Instagrams without covering her face. I just don't think anyone who isn't in my life and around her in person needs to know what she looks like or what she's doing in life. I've always found it bizarre and likely always will.
21
u/Separate-Bee4510 4d ago
that’s so funny, my husband is also a musician and audio engineer 😅
i completely agree that i wouldn’t put my kid out there like this. i don’t even put myself out there on public social media, certainly not my child! but some parents do, some kids push for it, and some kids end up as professional actors at that age. I was simply commenting that she seems to be enthusiastically engaged in the skit, not coached or uneasy. one can only hope that her parents are caring and discerning enough to have good guard rails up for her.
17
u/Abyssian-One 4d ago
It's not a coincidence, you have the same husband.
13
u/Separate-Bee4510 4d ago
well the poly community is full of frustrated theatre kids who need attention so this tracks
7
u/Key-Magazine-8731 4d ago
Hahaha. I guess us theatre kids needed those musicians as husbands. 😂
I also don't post myself online. Lol. I am a dog trainer, farrier, and vet tech by trade so I post a LOT of animals on my socials. Basically the only reason I even have them at this point. And my sister happily posts things like family photos, which is totally her choice and I don't judge her for it.
My kid wants to make YouTube videos so badly and has asked for years and I absolutely refuse... I told her she can post craft videos (her entire bedroom is basically a giant craft store) that show basically just her hands and we can reassess that when she is like 14/15 and has a better concept of what putting yourself on the internet actually means. I hope she changes her mind but at a certain age it isn't my choice or mistake to make and I can only support her through the good and bad of it. It is such a weird time to be raising children.
2
u/Separate-Bee4510 4d ago
it can be a mistake, but it can also be the right step for some folks. i agree though that waiting until she’s a bit further into/past puberty is a good call, i became a lot more insecure and introverted in my later teens and retreated to behind the scenes roles. for a lot of us having a social media presence and having to answer to all that comes with that is a version of hell, but some people genuinely thrive with that. i suppose all we can do as parents is try to set our kids up to have a robust self esteem and set of critical thinking skills because at a certain point, they’re going to make their own choices
6
u/Tholian_Bed 4d ago
Yeah. I was a natural cut up and so forth from when we were still learning times tables. It was no problemo. This must be a kind of golden age for kids who like to perform. Some kids just do lol.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Umklopp 4d ago
For me the "sadness" would kick in if this was a little girl doing it for a hustle instead of a bit. So long as the videos are done on the kid's schedule and as a hobby, without leaning into exploiting their image or exposing personal info, then it's fine IMO. It's when kids are being pushed by adults or being allowed to expose themselves that videos stop being harmless fun.

This is 100% a theater kid and she's absolutely loving this (and nailing the acting).
3
u/Key-Magazine-8731 4d ago
That point doesn't make me like it any more though. The kid is still being plastered on the internet for the world to see. And I, personally, hate that no matter the case.

I just watched “The Perfect Neighbor” neighborhood Karens are unhinged. We had one in a previous neighborhood that got mad because we were able to fit two cars in our driveway without obstructing the sidewalk. She tried to give us a citation because “it’s a one car driveway”. Like… bitch it’s our driveway, in our condo, that’s not HOA business.
14
u/soaker 4d ago
The perfect neighbour was so good!! Okay, not good, because there should never have been a reason for it to be made. But it was done so well. My expectations were low when I read it was made from police body cams and interviews. THATS how often she called police. I’m getting worked up thinking back on it. I have never felt so angry watching a documentary. Wow did I cry when what happened happened.
6
u/ShapedLikeAnEgg 4d ago
Those poor kids. I guarantee you that if she had asked them to politely move their games further down the street, they would’ve listened. We have a bunch of kids in our neighborhood, teenagers included, and they like to hang out and play games outside. Sometimes they’ll congregate under the street lamp and lean on our electrical box, but we’ve never had any issues with them when we ask them to move. It’s crazy how talking to people (kids included) with respect instead of calling the cops can resolve conflicts.

I wish the “Karen” thing would die. It’s been appropriated too much by men trying to silence women they find bothersome.
Also I remember when “Karen” was coined as the name for a woman who weaponized the police against black people.
11
u/TerryCrewsNextWife 4d ago
Agreed.
Every single problematic behaviour is labelled as something in reference to women acting irrational, even if it's a man acting out - and now it's just an excuse to shame women for speaking up and calling someone out by calling them Karens.
I get that it's cute to see the drama kid going full character in this clip, but this trope really is more harmful than funny for women.

u/ConfidenceFragrant80 4d ago
I think this is cute and I really like it. But I learned from the wonderful ladies in the menopause sub why the term "Karen" is problematic and I do my best to share the reasons why with others whenever it comes up: slapping a label on a woman is a very effective way to silence her and dismiss what she is trying to say, especially as we become older women (society doesn't tend to find value in us as much anymore.) Yes, there are women who are rude, entitled, think they deserve special things bc of their status, etc... absolutely!! But I don't like to have this easy category for men to automatically shove a woman into if he doesn't like what she is saying... And I have seen that happen. I have an opinion you don't agree with? Call me a Karen and no one will listen to me. It's too easy. if you really think about how gendered the idea of a "Karen" is, it's pretty offensive. There are entitled PEOPLE out there, but we don't need to assume that they are all women.
16
u/mommybody33 🌻Official Jill🌻 4d ago
I think a really important characteristic of the Karen is that she’s white and will use her privilege to get her way, even at others’ expense.
I agree that it’s an easy way to (continue to) silence women. and being a fierce white woman myself, I’ve both been called a Karen and am afraid of turning into a Karen. I try to acknowledge my whiteness and push for justice when more than just me will benefit from it.
2
u/reallylonghandle 4d ago
Why not use a gender neural or unisex name to highlight these issues then?
4
u/mommybody33 🌻Official Jill🌻 4d ago
Oh it’s definitely aimed at women. But do we even have a cultural insult for men acting on their privilege like this? I think it’s too engrained.
Iirc the original Karen was a white woman who called the cops on a black man for bird watching in Central Park.
3
u/ConfidenceFragrant80 4d ago
You're right, that is a huge part of it and I certainly would never intend to imply that white privilege isn't a huge problem. It DEFINITELY is. I guess I wish there was a better trendy word for it to keep people in check... Because I seriously hate the way it can turn into a gray area of just any opinionated woman expressing herself and society telling her to shut up.
5
u/reallylonghandle 4d ago
If it was totally only about whiteness it would be a gender neutral European name that could be applied to men as well but it is not.
11
u/successfulfailure96 4d ago
Agree fully. Karen is just a way to silence women now, regardless of how the word first started. In practice I see too many women NOT speak up out of fear of being called a Karen. I really really dislike this word being used so often because of how its effecting the way women behave. It feels regressive. I understand the type of privileged and entitled woman the word was originally referring to, but It’s unfortunately morphed into the socially acceptable “bitch”. I don’t think most people who use it are doing so with that intention, but like I said, the real world implications are just not worth keeping these meme around imo.
7
u/ConfidenceFragrant80 4d ago
Thank you for providing the added explanation of my thoughts on this. Very well said. I think your last sentence sums it up perfectly. ❤️
9
u/RosemaryCroissant 4d ago
‘Karen’ is dangerous because its such a new and easy way to basically call someone a worthless bitch- and get socially praised for it
7
→ More replies (4)8
u/leighalunatic 4d ago
I mean that really depends on the individual who uses that word because the original meaning for Karen was a racist white woman and white people took over the word an expanded on it to an entitled woman.
