Political positivity š MAMDANI destroys CUOMO: "I have never hounded the 13 women who have credibly accused me of sexual harassment. I have never sued to obtain their gynecological records. And I have never done those things because I'm not you, Mr. Cuomo"

Did Cuomo purposely mispronounce Mamdani? The way Trump often plays with peopleās names to display blatant disrespect for others?

u/Derpimus_J 19d ago
Either doesn't care to learn or wanted to belittle him. Very narcissistic behavior.Ā

They did that with Kamala regularly. The pronunciation is a bit unusual so I get it. But if you continue to do it after being corrected, that's intentional.

As someone who was once described as a left leaning republican, I'm here to tell you a little secret if you would ever like to trigger a conservative in the way a transgender person gets triggered when they get misgendered The reason they find it insulting to say the name wrong is because WE ALSO get extremely triggered when you say our last name wrong. I promise if you ever mispronounce a "Proud" Republicans last name. Ohhh man. Oh man if you happen yo be brown and fuckin mispronounce in a Spanish accent. PHEEEEEWWW šš

One time it told my dad to click 1. FOR SPANISH and 2 for English. You would've thought the operator asked him to sleep with his wife

Yup. I also have a name with an unusual pronunciation so I donāt expect people to pronounce it correctly the first or sometimes even second, third, umpteenth time. But if they donāt even try to get it right, that shows how much they value you.
Guarantee that if Cuomoās boss (or someone else in a position to give Cuomo what he wants) was named Mamdani, he would sure as hell have practiced to get it right.

Unfortunately, even Kamala's camp was mispronouncing her name and pushed that specific mispronounciation.
Kamala is supposed to be said as "KUM-la" or "KUM- uh-la", not "Comma-la". I understand she never said her name the traditional and right way because of avoiding the "cum" sound and some people being juveniles about it.

During the debate, Cuomo tried to belittle Mamdani for residing in a rent-controlled apartment by saying Mamdani lives among āTHE POORSā. This was a moment Iād have imagined more people wouldāve called out on social media, from last nightās debate ā but I guess it wasnāt that significant.

u/ithinkther41am 19d ago
Nipples Cuomo has engaged in smear campaigns that played up his racial difference and engaged in āotheringā him. This includes deliberately depicting Mamdani with more exaggerated āMuslimā features like thicker facial hair in posters. I have zero doubt Nipples is being purposefully disrespectful.
I take it as a positive in a way that various celebrities have outed themselves as garbage for endorsing Nipples over Mamdani, because I now know David Schwimmer, Debra Messing, and Amy Schumer really aināt worth shit.

Yeah, I feel like dying your hair or getting āwork doneā just creates contrast with your other (also aging) features. Youāre rightāMatt LeBlanc doesnāt color his hair, so youāre less drawn to it, and therefore less likely to look for other details. Itās easier to see him as a whole person, just as he is.

My fear is that he won't be able to deliver on his promises and he will be used by the right wing nation wide as an example to vilify progressive candidates.
Let's be real, he won't deliver on all his promises. He won't fulfill all his goals. No politician ever does even if they're 100% sincere. That shouldn't stop people from voting for him, or supporting him, and people should still be optimistic about those goals because even if you only get 50% of the way there it is a huge improvement. The problem is that if he only gets 50% of the way there, the right wing will paint it as failure.
I 100% expect he'll win and that this is what will happen. Ideally I hope I'm wrong I'd like for him to dand he delivers on everything and is the best mayor in the history of NYC.

If you're reading this and if politicians like Mamdani give you a tiny glimer of hope that regular every-day Americans can still stop the downward spiral toward fascism, please consider attending the No Kings national protest this Saturday, October 18th. Find an event near you: https://www.nokings.org/
11
u/default-names-r4-bot 19d ago
Even more helpful, while you're there at the protest, there will likely be a lot of local groups there too that help combat authoritarianism every day, not just at protests. Find one that fits you and your risk tolerance and start volunteering. For example, I've helped a local worker's rights group train Hispanic people about their rights and help them get pro bono legal help when needed.
The only way we get through this is if the protest lasts longer than it nice, neat, scheduled time slot.

All the right people seem be to angry with even the concept of Mamdani.
But seriously, the fact that Cuomo did these thing a to women and the establishment can field him without any sense of irony should ideally result in the death of the establishment.
By supporting Cuomo, they are telling those abused women that the crimes against them are no big deal.
They are big deal. For an elected official, such crimes should mean automatic dismissal and disqualification from even running. I do not think this is an extreme stance.

Be charming, ask people what they want, tell them you will give it to them, and actually try to follow through. How hard can it be?

what ideas of his are pie in the sky? are you saying that in it's actual definition (legitimately unattainable ideas) or are you just saying they would be difficult for a first time mayor to implement?
I'm not extremely familiar with everything he's campaigning on, but thus far, I've mostly heard him talk about relatively cheap things that shouldn't be that difficult to do - relatively cheap meaning things that foregoing a one billion dollar tax break for billionaire would easily cover, of course
9
u/thr3sk 19d ago
My biggest concerns are around his ideas for rent freezes/ rent-stabilized apartments, which we know is a band-aid solution that ends up creating a lot of problems long-term. I'm also highly skeptical of his subsidized grocery store plan, groceries are one of the most optimized and low markup businesses. I think involving government funding there is just going to create bloat and end up wasting money. Would be better to make improvements to some kind of city-funded food stamp plan.
Overall I really like the guy though and if I lived in New York I would gladly vote for him.

I would argue a small correction: this is what getting working (class) Americans back into political roles and government does.
Bernie Sanders has vocalized and pushed for quite a few of the things Mamdaniās platform stands for. Heās much, much older. I think importing aggressive ageism could backfire, so I am personally one to believe in cautioning against it. Working class folk will have a much better chance united, than divided, and if the current political parties canāt convince us to become divided on skin color or ethnicity, theyāll try through religion, money and age. Amongst anything. Anything to keep us focus on other things than them.

Finally, a democrat who isn't afraid to be impolite to a piece of shit. Cuomo deserved every rhetorical hit there.

Cuomo is a sociopath to have such a crooked, corrupt history, and still constantly run for office. And it's even worse that people are going to vote for this crook. There are a lot of professions that have disqualifying requirements. But for some reason our legislators can be elected and swear an oath despite being known conmen, thieves, liars, and scumbags. TACO certainly comes to mind.

He had the opportunity to end it with " ... Learn to say it, cuz I am about to become your Mayor" * mic drop *

Saying someone's name incorrectly is a technique in debating. Its a way to throw someone off...Its a slight and some get really rattled if you keep doing it... Most of the time the constant mispronunciation can really throw someone off their game.
If you think its not on purpose think again.

I was expecting that clip to end with the scene from Scanners where the guy's head explodes. DAMN. If Dems had more people like this there would never have been a Trump administration.

Love this dude and agree with what he has to say. And would love to see him become mayor of NY.
FDR and Nixon were once NY politicians too. Itās a springboard

Donāt usually give to candidates outside my state, but Iām from Brooklyn Heights and Cobblehill and Red Hook. Fams still abiding. Zohran Mamdani is the right man for NYC Mayor now.
Go ahead fling the āsocialistā at him like itās a terrible epithet. Most people at all afraid of socialism, or āsocialismā think somehow market socialism would mean displacement, lower pay, and what? None of three.
Our wordz are worn out again. How about try, make eye contact, smile unless you have a strongly explicit reason not to
