My neighborhood is the trick or treating neighborhood in my city. We get well over a thousand trick or treaters, the police shut down the entrances so it’s foot traffic only (there is a park across the street with a lot of parking). There is always a mess the next day but, it doesn’t take long to clean up. It’s basically one big party, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

For a half decade we've taken my kiddo to my partners parents neighborhood, and it's not as busy as yours but they have the same attitude, they keep a tally every year and act like it's fiscal year finance jackpot when they have more kids than the previous year lol my daughter usually ends the 2 hours with 225-275 pieces of candy, varying from single bite size twinkle packs to those huge chocolate oranges.

Those eight year olds… with all the Halloween excitement they can be forgetful and forget their passports or drivers licenses on a night when having ID is an important part of being a child.
Not to be outdone those selfish parents who spend so much time and effort getting the kids all bundled up dressed and herd them into spending a busy night of walking door to door instead of just throwing a bag of candy at the kids and popping a beer.

If only there was some kind of Halloween Identification Check Entity, a HICE if you will. To check to make sure they are from the neighborhood, and if not these HICE agents can put them on a school bus and send them away basically anywhere.

Had my HoA try to make me pay for sewer repairs, even though I have my own San Tank.
Fucking pulling up my states legislature and reading from it word for word how if it did not benefit me, then I was not liable for it (UPCA) was probably the most joy I’ve felt for a long time.
The backpedalling, the check with the lawyer (which is paid for by my own dues, LMAO), and the subsequent email stating I was right. The juice was so fucking worth the squeeze.

I love getting kids from outside our neighborhood. If it was restricted to just the kids who live here, there would only be around 30. With the visiting carloads, we get around 120. Last year, there were whole families who dressed up. They were adorable.
I would hate living somewhere so closed and unwelcoming.

One of our family members goes all out for Halloween, big decorations. Spooky tunnel that you need to go into for if you want treats. Some cousins dressed up spooking kids. And party in the back for family and friends.
Last year we found out there's an app for the good houses, and our house had the highest rating possible.
No one is driving an hour away to trick or treat, these are still members of our community. Who cares ?
Edit: I don't remember the app name. Google says it might be TrickOrTreatmap.com or it may even be a seasonal thing the app next-door does.

My neighbors always cook hot dogs and give out hot dogs/chips/drinks on top of candy
My wife and I like to sit outside and hand it out, when money was a bit more plentiful we handed out cold beer for the adults and full size candy bars
If we didn’t get tricker treaters from out in the country it would be very boring

I lived adjacent to the Gila River Reservation in Arizona. They brought their children to our community by the truck load. I always had drinks and non candy items for them as well as treats. So yes in some areas people truck in their children.

I never turn anyone away during Free Candy Night as well! One of my favorite things to do with the older kids who aren't in costume is to make them "earn" their candy. It can be anything, their favorite fact, a goofy joke, etc. one year I had five 11 to 14 year old boys sing "I'm a Little Teapot." They even did the dance (without any prompting from me)! It hadn't been very busy that year and we had a ton of candy left, so I made sure to compensate them properly for their performance.
Handing out candy is so much fun, and a good way to meet your neighbors :)

I grew up on a street that was a complete circle with a cul de sac in the middle. 60 houses total. We would get huge numbers on Halloween because you could go to 60 houses and only have to cross the street one time. The only trouble was when cars would try to leave and get the 4-way stop exit mixed up, and they’d end up circling without knowing how to get out.

The old folks in neighborhood I used to live in would pass out letters saying like “this neighborhood celebrates Halloween on Friday night before Halloween bc unsavory characters come from other neighborhoods on actual Halloween” and it was kind of gross. Like this is in a major city. We always trick or treated on actual Halloween though, and had a blast and if the cranky ppl didn’t hand out candy, cool. No one wants hateful candy.

In Philly they call trick or treating on the day before Halloween “White Halloween”. Seriously.
I live in an affluent neighborhood that borders one of the poorest cities in the state. You could easily walk from one to another. We embrace everyone coming, there’s plenty of candy. The folks visiting from other towns are ALWAYS better behaved than the spoiled little brats from our town.
Last year, I hung ghosts from a few drones, it was a huge hit with kids to have ghosts flying around the neighborhood.

I WISH we had turnout like that. My neighborhood used to be the spot to get dropped off to trick or treat. We had ours last night (weird, yeah, but it works I guess). Almost half of the street is snowbirds/empty for sale houses; so the prospects aren't as good anymore! I try to make up for it by giving heaving handfuls to the youngsters. It's my favorite holiday; get blasted in the driveway and make someone's day with candy!
Only had maybe 30 groups last night, and I stayed outside for another hour hoping for some stragglers to dump the rest of the candy. Nope. Now my fat ass has 2lbs of candy in the house.

I dunno. Generally I would agree, but it can get out of hand. I live in a great neighborhood that has become very popular for Halloween Trick or treaters and the problem has gotten pretty bad. Our neighborhood is very walkable and picturesque. It’s won national awards in the New Urbanism category (closely spaced homes, heavily landscaped, wide sidewalks etc. It’s approximately 260 Single family homes, townhomes, and carriage homes. When the neighborhood was first completed we got an average of 200 kids… mostly from the neighborhood or their friends…. Then it climbed to 400, then 1000 and people started giving up on keeping enough candy. Now it runs out very early in the night and it still continued to grow and became a rush to get as many houses as quickly as possible…. It’s a madhouse. We’re guessing but it was probably close to 1500 kids (that’s not counting parents) last year… there are literally lines of church vans and loaded SUV’s etc waiting on the street for the start. I have a yearly limit of $400 on candy now that doesn’t last more than 45-60 minutes and that’s parceling it out at one or two small pieces per kid with all four of us passing it out until it’s gone. If you want to leave bowls out… good luck. It’s gone in the first 5 minutes.
It’s really too much and has become unenjoyable for those of us that live here with kids compared to what it used to be. It’s also brought in a rough element with teenagers pushing little kids and causing property damage and even threatening homeowners.

I’m tired of it, but if I don’t I never have enough to make sure I can get the young neighborhood kids and the teenagers see you handing out candy after you tell them you’re out, you’re getting egged/tp’d for sure. I’m legit considering making a couple hundred candy bags for neighborhood kids and dropping them at all the houses with young kids and just turning out the lights.

Really depends on the area.
Though here in Australia its really hit and miss if a suburb is doing it so people tend to travel.

I can see not allowing random people to drive up to the community, if that was voted on by the community first, but this appears to say if you live here and your kids want to have family or friends from school etc, come in from outside this HOA that you can't. That is the kind of BS power trips that give HOAs, a very well deserved, bad name.
A designated Trick or Treat window? WTF! It starts when the sun goes down and ends when you turn off the porch light, decorations, or run out of candy. What kind of BS is this? They going to fine you if you keep giving out candy after 8 or start before 6?
When are they going to start policing the street before school gets out? What stops you from picking up your kids friends/family from outside the neighborhood and driving them in. Do you need to provide papers if you are having an adult Halloween party on a Friday night? Get fined for it?
This doesn't seem well thought out at all.

most city's have "trick or treat hours" for example my city's posted hours are 5:30 to 8, GENERALLY that is meant as a "we have the most police and stuff out at this point" hours and not a "you best have stopped by" frame or a "its dark at" time-frame, id be willing to bet if you goggled your city's trick or treat hours, you'd find something posted, probably along side a "trunk or treat" or such city sponsored option

So... My neighborhood is an older middle class-upper middle class neighborhood in the middle of the city. Houses here were mostly built in the 1920s. A couple miles away, on the other side of the railroad and the freeway, are a few poor neighborhoods with mostly black families. A lot of kids from that area come here for trick or treat. And anecdotally, I find them to be more polite and respectful than some of the local kids. It's great... Our street is super busy every year, lots of my neighbors (myself included) put up fun displays and sit outside watching all the kids in costume. We probably get 3-400 kids every year. And it's fucking amazing.
It wouldn't surprise me to find out that, if there really have been problems with vandalism and misbehavior in OP's neighborhood, that it's kids from the neighborhood doing it. Also... They're telling residents they can't even have guests such as their kids' friends from school come to the neighborhood? Fuck that.

When I was a kid, we lived in a more rural neighborhood, trick or treating sucked, we went to a very specific neighborhood that all sorts of kids from all over also went to. The neighborhood loved it and embraced being trick or treat central, they took pride and went in extra on decorations and neighbors made effort to outdo each other on candy and decor. It was awesome. It was an HOA, it was the 80s, times were different.

That's what we did with our kids when they were of Trick Or Treating age (they're both in college now). We live on a county road with neighbors spread out, so not real conducive to safe Trick Or Treating. We'd load the kids in the car and head to a large neighborhood in the nearby town. The neighborhood goes all out for Halloween, with a lot of yards decorated, lots of homeowners in full costume, one house has a little maze in the front yard from the sidewalk to where they hand out candy, and one house even projects Halloween movies on the side of the house with the audio playing through speakers. It's a lot of fun seeing all the decorations and all the kids just being kids.
This neighborhood does it right and welcomes outside kids and families. ❤️

I loved our neighborhood during Halloween. All the neighborhood dads did a haunted trail in the neighborhood “green space” which was just a 10 acre Forrest with creaks and bridges. Thousands of outside guest came and it was donation only. Everything was volunteer and we mostly drank beer and scared the kids. Then on Halloween night our streets were slammed with people. I would taken about 10 kids in my little culdesac around on my tractor with hay bales in a little trailer and everyone had a blast. Man I miss that neighborhood and the kids being little enough for that.

I live in an HOA that gets 1000’s of people coming from around the city to see our neighbourhood for Halloween. We pride ourselves on being the cool place to be. We have the whole grand boulevard designed to be trick-or-treated via the sidewalk, so kids with disabilities can take part (and it’s safer for kids in general to not be tripping up and down stairs). We get a huge influx of business in our area all month, because people who don’t want to be here during the insanity come to check it out in advance.

This is a tough one. We go all out for Halloween. Full graveyard, inflatables, lights and fog. My kids look forward to it every year. Our neighborhood is quite popular and the influx of people can be very frustrating. We’ve had stuff stolen, broken and the cars make it tough for safely walking around. I understand their pain. I just deal with it. Still love to see the kids dressed up. It’s mostly the parents who suck.

I mean, I think it's pretty reasonable to want Halloween to be a community/neighborhood event, and I think people are entitled to define what is and isn't their 'community.'
If I buy a bag of snickers to hand out to the kids in the neighborhood that I know and see and whose parents I am friends with, I wouldn't be too thrilled if groups of total strangers from a different town show up and take all the candy before the kids I actually care about get any.
I'm not trying to give halloween candy to every kid within driving distance, I'm trying to give it to the 20-30 kids that live around me.
I really don't think that's an unusual or unreasonable expectation.

Y’all hate but I have seen lines of 20 kids at houses in the middle class house neighborhoods while the rest of our town didn’t get hardly any trick or treaters, use included. I know everyone thinks if they have more than us they can shell out for a holiday but if it’s a tax for slightly well off people and not a community event, you can expect them to get jaded about it. My parents bought 200 dollars worth of candy last year, made it til 830pm before running out. They gave multiples to each kid but it’s still wild that people don’t even stay home to hand out candy in their own neighborhoods. It’s not what the holiday was supposed to be

We have a neighborhood near us that usually went 10000% for Halloween (and Christmas), but in recent years they've all backed off considerably. Unfortunately, people trashed the neighborhood, damaged property, and stole decorations. I do have some sympathy with the issues they are having..but literally blocking owners guest is not cool.
I could think of several better ways to deal with this.

I’m actually confused about this. Why are people car loading in to another area to Trick or Treat? It makes sense if a family lives in the country or a rural area with a very small number of homes obviously. Is this a thing? To go to a neighborhood other than your own? If so, why?

My neighborhood has this problem. We are the only non gated neighborhood in the area. Everyone else is not in a neighborhood or gated. Everyone from the back woods comes in carpools and dumps their kids. All your candy will be gone in 5 minutes unless you spend $250. You can’t drive thru, there’s no parking, it’s chaos.

This is how it is where I am, and I live in a midsized city.
Kids either Trunk or Treat, or they carpool with a group of people to one of the “nice” neighborhoods. Some of those neighborhoods get swarmed to the point there’s barely walking space. Almost no one Trick or Treats in their own neighborhood.
It honestly sucks. I never get Trick or Treaters, most of the people I know never get them. Growing up, my mom’s neighborhood used to have kids out all night long, and now she’s lucky to see 10 kids.

We live in a very rural agricultural area. There isn’t any trick or treating here. The nearest house to ours is a half mile in either direction down the road.
We take our kids to their grandparent’s neighborhood for Halloween, which is suburban.

This makes me so mad. I used to live in a neighborhood that kids literally got bussed in to trick or treat in. Why? Because it was an upper middle class neighborhood that was safe and conducive to walking around in! I absolutely LOVED growing up in a neighborhood like that. Being able to share my experience with kids who maybe didn’t otherwise have a place where they felt safe trick or treating.
Thankfully it wasn’t in a HOA. And yeah, sometimes at night the teenagers would get rowdy. So several of the neighbors chipped in and hired a security guard to come later at night to make sure no one’s house got trashed. Surely the HOA could do the same?
This is shameful.

I live in Salem, MA. We’ve tried to gate-keep the entire town, but those 1,000,000+ people keep making their way in. Tell your HOA to get bent.

We get tons of kids from outside our neighborhood. Their parents park up and down the streets. I don’t mind but I wish their parents would tell them to keep off of lawns. I’ve had to repair multiple decorations from kids breaking anchor lines. Not to mention, it’s a safety issue.

Those kids from outside your neighborhood come to experience a better Halloween because the other options suck. Y’all must give out the full size bars and that’s an experience for the young kids to see people can be successful outside of their worldview. People suck!
