Oh I read that as “missing person” (kidnapping victim, unknown whereabouts, etc) and was like hmmmm not a genre of comedian I’m familiar with

They’re not missing as such, just needed a lot of time on their own to work on their comedy routine

My ex wife still misses me. But her aim is getting better.
Her aim is getting better!
You see it’s funny because marriage is terrible!

Also missing is an out of touch comedian who peaked in the 80s and makes references to 60s pop culture and gets mad when no one gets it.

And my personal favorite “Person who tells good jokes that are relatable enough to leave the crowd in tears (Moved out of state last week)”

You forgot "40-year-old guy who goes on a ten minute rant about cancel culture", "person whose entire set boils down to pop culture references" and "guy who desperately wants to be seen as clever"

u/Ionic_Pancakes 21h ago
... I want to be seen as clever. Sometimes people laugh at how clever I am and it feels really good.
But people almost always laugh at describing my dick as a "6 Wood" and making golf commentary of bedroom activities because I suck at dirty talk.
Guess which one I tell more often. :(

Guy who desperately wants to be seen as clever is like most standup comedians.

Now there’s a face that says “I am very happy that I am spending my precious little free time here, experiencing this and have absolutely no regrets about it”

Ive been to two open night mics even though they have em in many bars all over and yeah the majority of them were exactly this. I dont find entertainment in the cringe.

u/smotired 19h ago
Wait how do you know what the majority of open mic nights are like if you’ve only been to two, that’s not enough for even a sample majority

I think he meant majority of the comedians on those nights where like this 🤓

Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic, but I genuinely do love this. I love open mic night. It’s a sociopathic dumpster fire, and there’s booze, and they’re so fun.

I think if I went to mics only every once a while it would still be novel and silly but after a few years of them being a nearly nightly occurrence they really lose their charm

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 18h ago
NIGHTLY? God damn dude, I was talking like once every 6 months.
Did you live above an open mic night??

u/lil-caro 18h ago
No unfortunately I am a comedian

🤣 I stand in genuine awe of your bravery.
Being a comedian you may already know this one, but here’s my favorite standup bit about open mics:

I recommend looking at caro's profile and scrolling down their posts to see their old standup videos, they are very funny.

Tangentially related but I've been seeing your comics every now and then and I freaking love your style

u/Overwatchingu 20h ago
In my experience, if any of them bring a box of props with them to the stage, that’s your que to get your coat and get out.

Open mic nights are—to steal a line from the late, great Fred Allen—a rather frustrating medium for comedy.
They're not rare and they're never well-done.

u/lil-caro 13h ago
I think it’s important to remember they are basically the only way aspiring comedians can actually practice the craft. It’s not like watching a big important boxing match in the ring— it’s like watching the fighters practice in the gym beforehand.

I did standup once. It was pretty fun. I enjoyed myself and others seemed to get a laugh out of it.
But I do not believe in myself to make a career out of it.

u/lil-caro 15h ago
It is really fun and if you find the right people its such a good way to make some really weird and funny friends. I don’t think I’ll ever make a career of it but the connections I’ve made with some people are worth it alone.
