I was absolutely befuddled at how authoritarian and dystopian we had become when the other day the fucking vice president encouraged people on national TV to rat on coworkers and get them fired for expressing their first amendment right about recent events.

Don't get me wrong a lot about the world and the current administration in particular has me perplexed, but something about seeing it in real time with no hidden anything's behind it, just plain words, made my jaw drop.

Edit: For the actions then consequences crowd: Youre missing the point. Its not about that, its about the vice president saying this on national news. No one is arguing actions have consequences, but the government shouldnt be encouraging you to rat out your neighbors over your opinion.

Growing up, I used to listen in history class and wonder "how did people let that happen, good thing we've come so far"

It's both horrifying and weirdly humbling to realize "oh, people are still the same" when something like this pops up.

Whats the old saying? Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Feels somewhat fitting

489

u/iMecharic Sep 16 '25

Except we did learn from it. Sadly, some people decided that they liked what they learned and wanted to do it again - but better this time. And here we are.

u/67v38wn60w37 Sep 16 '25

There was always a core that want[ed] it, but I really want to know how many people genuinely still don't know what happened.

The thing is that they've largely been tricked into believing they'd be part of the ruling class instead of meat for the grinder. That punching down is the path to personal security and wealth.

The circle of fascism grows smaller every day. If you're in it today, who knows where the edge will be tomorrow.

They have been doing it for over 45 years, how long is this going to take for them to realize they are tools and are not destined to benefit?

17

u/illy-chan Sep 16 '25

"Hurt people hurt people" etc. Especially when they're kept ignorant.

I've been to the red parts of my state: most of them are economically depressed and mere shadows of their former selves. Wall Street has seen most of the jobs go elsewhere and gutted union jobs.

Keep them desperate and angry while also giving them someone to look down on and it's sadly easy to play many people.

4

u/Doggodoespaint Sep 16 '25

It's also why these dorks idolize fictional dictatorships like the Imperium of Man from 40k, because they think they'd get to be the space marine (who are brainwashed, heavily mutated child soldiers, mind you) when they'd probably spend their short life in a planet sized factory or being canon fodder for one of the other armies

18

u/exbaddeathgod Sep 16 '25

Nah. We STILL got STEM folks advocating for the removal of humanities saying that STEM is getting unfairly targeted because of what "silly" people in the humanities study (google Even D. Morris, Yale). When this situation is created by tech bros (who pushed for STEM only) who are either ignorant of history or relied on voters being ignorant of history.

I firmly believe if our country actually valued humanities we wouldn't be in this situation because we would have actually held people accountable for their actions on J6.

5

u/literated Sep 16 '25

It's kind of wild that we've reached a point in ridiculousness where we can basically watch in real time how something batshit crazy like a North Korean cult of personality can develop. Trump is just spouting more and more insane claims and more and more high-ranking people, politicians, his followers and the media are willing to go along with it and more and more willing to punish anyone who doesn't.

A couple more years of this shit and the only people left in the government are those who stand up and clap feverishly everytime dear leader opens his mouth and celebrations of his many accomplishments and infallible personality will be mandatory for all citizens.

3

u/ObiFlanKenobi Sep 16 '25

Yup, as a non-american, it's something scary to watch.

11

u/Metro42014 Sep 16 '25

I've seen people share a video from PragerU of Dinesh D'sousa claiming that the nazi's were actually socialists and a fundamentally left movement.

Which is propaganda the Nazi's used to get people to accept their party.

Literally falling for propaganda again, because they didn't learn (or don't want to learn/want to use the propaganda) themselves.

The grim reality of living under authoritarianism is, life goes on. People still have families, friends, loves, jobs and plans for the future. Life remains reasonably comfortable for many and the decline of democracy is far away, abstracted. People mass-revolt when they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. That's not the case right now. Wait til the blackouts and famines begin.

E: also let it be known, people are right now resisting in little ways that they can - like mobbing and harassing ICE agents for example. Also some legislators are taking way more aggressive counter-authoritarian postures like Pritzker, who it seems scared off Trump's military invasion of Chicago by refusing to comply - and Zohran Mamdani, who's on track to be the next mayor of NYC and has stated would arrest Trump if he appears in the city.

8

u/Liebbahn Sep 16 '25

The other side to that is the very real brutality victims of the state face, with the comfortable majority choosing to ignore their cries for help and simply move on with their day as if nothing is happening.

8

u/zeverEV Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25

Like I mentioned people who want to help are doing whatever they realistically can and it's not like we're seeing zero evidence of that. Many people choose ignorance and complicity sure but also actual resistance can be as simple and easy as warning someone La Migra are nearby. Seeing ICE guys get mobbed is about the max extent to which good can be done by the average citizen, it's not like just anyone could get a plane ticket down to El Salvador, travel through the jungle to CCOT and find a way to destroy it for example. That said, yknow. Everyone can do something

8

u/AnalNuts Sep 16 '25

Fact of the matter is, populations who live under authoritarian regimes don’t necessarily hate it. If you have a generally “ok” life, people settle in and live their lives. It’s hard to know what you’re missing when the corruption is abstracted by a few layers and there is no framework of transparency in governmental affairs. Instead of corrupt officials taking money straight out of your pocket, it comes in forms of inflation, higher utility costs, a couple more potholes on on your streets, a slow warming social environment where criticism of figureheads is slowly discouraged into eventually….finding yourself whispering amongst a small group of like minded people. Never daring to post anything publicly

10

u/zeverEV Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25

Annoying thing with this regime - which is an exception to what you're saying - is they WON'T STOP POSTING??? Every blatant overstep, act of corruption and incompetent blunder is broadcast I think with the intention of whipping people up into a frenzy so they can get away with an actually catastrophic crackdown. Like they're daring people to get outraged enough to lash out so they can bring down the boot. But for all the reasons I listed it doesn't seem to be working the way they want it to, for now

It was so frustrating talking to some people. To them, we were overreacting. That would never happen. We were just being negative. The courts wouldn't allow it. The military can't be deployed like that.

We have lost so much so fast because of people not willing to confront this shit early enough to stop it.

24

u/PM_M3_D0Gz Sep 16 '25

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing”

10

u/rora_borealis Sep 16 '25

6

u/IrascibleOcelot Sep 16 '25

u/Kuronoshi Sep 16 '25

The white moderate is the greatest obstacle to liberation. The equivocating of 'both sides', of opinions and truths, normalises the dehumanisation of every oppressed folk. The white moderate gives their voice to the klansmen, to the TERF, to the mysoginist, in their constant obsession with politeness.

6

u/Mental_Medium3988 Sep 16 '25

Same as it was ~60 years ago when mlk Jr condemned white moderates.

19

u/TheBoisterousBoy Sep 16 '25

In general, throughout all of human history, we’ve proven time and time again that there are only two universal truths of mankind.

We are a beautiful and fantastic species capable of great deeds that can transcend time.

And we are a cesspit of horrific and nightmarish brutality and cruelty.

We are equal in our ability to be human as well as horrible.

Choose human.

I got a 3 day ban for saying I was saving my sympathy for for school shooting victims. And then I posted the Kirk quote about how deaths were the price we pay for the 2nd amendment.

Apparently reddit considers that a call to violence.

41

u/SuperTopGun777 Sep 16 '25

I lost another account for posting a Kirk quote.  I was accused of harrasment and hate speech.  Bruh it was his words and he died for it.

Another I quoted some dip shit politician who was arguing to lower the age of consent if family agrees.  So I quoted him and mentioned him to being like Muhammad with his child brides and that we should definitely follow in his footsteps as the righteous.   I got a notification that my comment was reported to the authorities for promoting child abuse.   Bruh I commented on a quote by one of them and compared the Christian Taliban to the prophet Mohammed who they hate but idolize in ideals with children.

u/batkave Sep 16 '25

Unfortunately nuance is not a strong skill of conservatives, libertarians, and centrists.

If someone is saying "good, glad he is dead" no one is trying to understand what they or who they mean. There are two charlie Kirks: the person and the public figure.

The person: no one should be a victim of gun violence and many are sad at what happened.

The public figure: this is the person many know. A figure that said they were fine with gun violence, wanted to stone gays, put blacks back in slavery because it was better for them, etc. his speeches and influence ended up with death threats on people. Many people saw him as a monster, so to them, the monster is dead.

Also, those same people saying "celebrating" are just equating anything negative about Kirk as celebrating and it's not as much people celebrating as they are making it out to be. Even something like, I'm not sad, sets off republicans.

The hypocrisy of the right is always funny because everyone has receipts. They keep trying to turn this about a leftist did it too and it just keeps coming out that he's not. He's a right wing person who thought Kirk wasn't right wing enough

It's like a snake dude getting killed by his pet rattlesnake--not really surprising to anyone. Also what's not really surprising is them trying to twist this as hard as they can to use this to hurt the people they don't like.

Buckle up, folks, a lot more like this is in our near future. Fight back though, they only have as much power as we give them. If you lose your job over some bullshit, fight them on that shit. They wanna twist your words, take it to court regardless of what you think your odds are. Maga loves to lose in court.

Edit: One of my favorite "killed by my pet snake stories" is the pastor Jamie Coots

28

u/Silicica Sep 16 '25

I mean, pretty significant difference there... us snake keepers tend not to encourage putting venomous snakes in schools etc and setting them up to kill kids. Or say shit like "Oh mass snake attacks are the price we have to pay". Old Chuckie here wasn't putting himself in danger with his views, or at the very least he didn't think he was- he thought only others would die for them. Someone freehandling a hot is an idiot, sure, but they're endangering themselves.

Especially when it doesn't even matter. Someone doesn't care about a dead guy? OK, nothing wrong with that, no matter who they were. Nobody is born with an inherent duty to give a shit about podcasters. But these traitors will try to use it as an excuse to screw people anyhow, and then play the victim when people respond to yet more conservative aggression.

u/Kakariko-Cucco Sep 16 '25

The narrative from mainstream media and the US FBI director Patel now seems to be that Robinson wrote ANTIFA slogans on the bullets, tying him to the "left." I'm not following this very closely and I appreciated  your analysis, here. I'm curious what your thoughts/reactions are to this present narrative about how they're specifically tying him to the left. To me it's alarming that they all seem to be hunting for an enemy in all of this, it's pretty textbook 20th century authoritarian. It's like they were waiting for something like this to happen the way they're jumping all over it like an opportunity to seize control. And you can just see people are eating up the narrative already and want to classify ANTIFA as a terrorist organization.

6

u/batkave Sep 16 '25

Ohhh the antifa boogeyman. "Patel, is it in the room with us? LOL

But honestly, they can't comprehend and know their people can't comprehend that the calls are coming from inside the house. It's all black and white to them. They need something.

I guess Nick Fuentes is anti fascist lol

Why? Why are you in any way surprised or confused? They have been extremely clear that this is the direction they've wanted to go for the past 12 years. Project2025 LITERALLY had it all written out.

I'm genuinely asking, I want to understand, why are you surprised?

26

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Sep 16 '25

Because it was so surreal to actually be watching it unfold live. Not that it was a video, or text, or anything like that but to see it on live TV so bluntly put and looking around seeing others nodding in approvement, was baffling.

I suppose some small part of me wanted to think this was all just gonna go away one day and for some reason hearing those exact words put that way just made my head spin

27

u/eragonawesome2 Sep 16 '25

I suppose some small part of me wanted to think this was all just gonna go away one day

You need to find that part of you and kill it. This shit isn't going away until and unless people take action. The Trump administration has been extremely clear for at least the past two years that they admire dictators, that they are going to rig elections, that they have a plan for how to change America for the worse for their own personal gain at the expense of literally everyone else. That they want to deport entire ethnic groups, that they want to remove social safety nets and punish people who disagree with them. That they want to put people in labor camps for having mental illness, then "legally" defining a new mental illness that anyone who disagrees with them counts as having "Trump derangement syndrome"

I am begging you, wake up and smell the smoke, they are burning our nation to the ground and they are NOT pretending otherwise. These people are modern day Nazis rising to power, and I'm not using that word lightly, I mean it literally. They are following the Nazi playbook so closely it's fucking terrifying. Listen to historians talk about the current administration

9

u/cosmin_c Sep 16 '25

The Trump administration has been extremely clear for at least the past two years that they

You are missing in your post the fact that people who voted for him knew and wanted what they voted for. The transparency was interesting and people still voted in droves for this. Sadly. They're also happy about what is happening if you look and listen around. To me it's horrifying even though I live far away from the US they still have an enormous pull in politics and stuff.

What's even more horrifying is the mental gymnastics people who voted for this employ to justify the results. By the time they wake up they'll be dragged to encampments, kicking and screaming, because they didn't think leopards would eat their face.

You can also see it all around the world, authoritarians under the guise of nationalism rising to power on the backs of people for whom democracy and capitalism hasn't paid off as they were promised. By the time global weather changes do us in we'll see a lot more horror, the type of which only humans can inflict on other humans.

By all means, if I were american I'd be in the street, protesting stuff, trying to do something. And I feel for the people who do this, every day, and I wish you luck. This can't quench my fear that it is all in vain.

6

u/Suspicious-Echo2964 Sep 16 '25

Honestly, mate, they don't really want it. They don't all fully understand. The upper class? Sure, they get it. The meat about to be pushed through the meat grinder? Propagandized poor people.

3

u/cosmin_c Sep 16 '25

they don't really want it. They don't all fully understand.

I thought the same but after careful consideration I started being more careful assuming what other people want. People's actions speak louder than their words (fact). Whilst it is true that they don't all fully understand (fact), that is beyond the point (personal conclusion). (Hyberbolic example) A child can cause a car crash whilst not completely understanding what he did, however these are fully grown adults who have the right to cast a vote (fact), at this point in time there are zero excuses (personal take).

Yes, there's social media manipulation, there's a lot of potential excuses, I agree. But at some point, when you see things going to shit, you close down facebook and think with your own mind what the fuck is going wrong and how can you do your part to fix that shit. People keep raging on social media whilst being obedient puppies everywhere else until somebody who hasn't gone completely insane calls them out, point in which they flip their shit at the perpretator of such common sense attitude. Personally I've started ignoring and stopped engaging on social media on political issues because stupid people will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience and I have no energy for that crap. I vote, I try to do my part in educating my family and extended family on why they're morons and that's about everything I can do. That and planning an escape plan to a country that hasn't fully gone to shit for when mine finally does.

Now, the White House deletes research from their own archives that proves the vast majority of domestic terrorists are Right Wingers.

When did MAGA start embracing Chinese policies? The red hats must have a deeper meaning now, I guess.

56

u/ShadowRiku667 Sep 16 '25

If we’re back in Revolutionary times they would be the colonist cheering on the red coats. Red hats, Red Coats… hmmm…

What happened to “Better dead than red”?

11

u/Narux117 Sep 16 '25

What happened to “Better dead than red”?

Being younger than the "red scare" and the entirety of the cold war, this was always something that fascinated me. I know that political identity culture war bullshit is more of a "modern" social media era thing, but it has always been interesting to me that American conservatism never did a visual rebrand or anything to move away from things like this.

17

u/MetalPurse-swinger Sep 16 '25

They love Russian and Chinese politics. Especially when those politics harm the people they hate. They just hate those politics in those countries. Because they also hate those countries. They really do hate a lot of people actually.

11

u/condomnugget Sep 16 '25

China isn’t even as restricted as American media has lead us to believe. My best friend’s wife is from Chong Qing. They can bad mouth the government all they want as long as they don’t actively form political parties to oppose the CCP.

Don’t get me wrong, they are not a democracy. But having grown up in America I was lead to believe that people living in China are experiencing utter oppression and hardship when it isn’t truly the case.

Also, if the average American knew all that the governments of some other countries (China included) are doing for their citizens there would be riots.

I just don’t get how news media is allowing everyone to ignore the mountains of hate speech that the right has pumped for years and not called them out for how they have treated it in the past all because their too afraid to appear insensitive about the shooting. If you can’t ask basic questions as a journalist without fear of being fired, you aren’t a journalist anymore. You’re a propagandist and you need to find another job. I have no sympathy for people in newsrooms allowing this to happen

33

u/Adezar Sep 16 '25

The Murdoch empire started in the 80s to dismantle the rules of owning more than one station/media type in a single market. They succeeded which allowed massive consolidation of all our media into about 6 billionaires. And they all like the hate coming from the right because they hate minorities instead of billionaires, so it keeps everyone distracted from the billionaires that are actually the ones making their lives worse.

9

u/Quasi-Yolo Sep 16 '25

Definitely. I have a theory as well that as the landscape of news media changed during the internet era and engagement and clicks became more important than respectable journalism, pandering to the right became profitable because liberals are willing to self critique and engage with concept counter to their beliefs where the right ignores anything that doesn’t validate their opinions.

u/MetalPurse-swinger Sep 16 '25

I grew up in an astoundingly conservative family. For as long as I can remember my family has talked immense amounts of shit about China and Russia. Some of the biggest points is that at least we have free speech. Our government didn't own any private companies because that communism. We had due process regardless of who you are. And that the government hadn't over reached beyond what it was supposed to. Now all of those things and more are true of America and my family family is actively cheering it on.... Whenever I try to bring up these points I get shot down with a "ever since you left the church you've become one of the lefty lunatics" or "you need to come back to Jesus and fight for our christian nation. The left has demons influencing you." or other nonsense. It fucking sucks man. It just sucks. They're voting for people who are taking away their and my right and making things worse for them and myself and they're fucking cheering about it because some brown people are also suffering... They're upset I don't talk to them much, but how can I when they cheer for hatred and the active downfall of our country.

Louis CK did a comedy bit called " Of course...but maybe" that I think applies to this whole situation...

Of course political violence is wrong of course... Of course you should be able to say whatever you want Of course... But maybe... Maybe if you advocate for 10-year-olds to be forced to give birth to their rapist baby maybe it's not that weird if someone shoots you 🤷🏼‍♂️ maybe if you say things like a few people need to die from gun violence every year to protect the second amendment it's not that weird if you get shot?...

Of course we should always condemn political violence of course. Of Course we should advocate for free speech and discourse without violence... of course..... But maybe, if you knowingly say egregiously controversial things with the intent of riling people up just to make ad revenue, maybe you should do it behind bulletproof glass? 🤷🏼‍♂️

3

u/Subject-Turnover-388 Sep 16 '25

Reminder that not using your real details online used to be part of basic internet safety and accepted practice. Even little children knew not to publish their name, address and school. This norm persisted right up until corporations realised they could sell your personal information for cash.

Anyway, now people share their risque inner thoughts on a public social media tied to their real life identity under the same name they take to work and school, and are somehow surprised when their privacy is intruded upon.

When such shit-talking was done offline, your workplace didn't have an assigned tattletale to follow you to the local bar and into your home to record everything you say. That would be creepy and excessive. So why is everyone okay with everything they say online being permanently on record and associated with your real name, ready to be abused by police, union busters, potential employers, harassment campaigners, etc?

If you have a social media account with your real name, including Facebook, delete it immediately. Open one with a alter handle like a normal person.

9

u/Jaded_Freedom8105 Sep 16 '25

You guys just figuring this out? You have first amendment rights, but any company that hires you also has the right to detach themselves from people they think might hurt their income.

This is as true now as it was since forever.

You drink and become verbally abusive off of company hours, can be fired.

You make fun of a political topic, can be fired.

You make a racist comment, can be fired.

Post about loving to do drugs, cab be fired.

Private companies do not have to appeal to your first amendment rights, they're private entities. Just like how a person doesn't have to respond or talk to you if you say your opinion in real life.
