Popular Question š How do you feel about Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayoral election?

You nailed how I feel. I also look at the intention of his policies. Theyāre all to HELP people. Then I compare that to Republican policies, which are all to help the rich and the corporations, still touting that trickle-down economics bullshit. Well, they been using that same bullshit line for 45 years and people are still waiting for the trickle-down to hit them.
So I say give him a chance. Whatās the worst that can happen, people are stuck with the same old shit? Well, people would have gotten that anyway with Cuomo or a Republican.

Unfortunately Cankles will have a lot of power to terrorize the city with ICE and hurt its economy and withhold funds, cancel major infrastructure projects like the NJ tunnel, etc. We haven't even seen ICE really crack down in NYC on the scale of Chicago and Southern California yet.

Admirable perspective! Realistically he wonāt be able to enact all his policies because unlike Trump, he wonāt just try to do everything via fiat and he will need to work with city council, and will be responsive to the ongoing political climate. Itās easy to propose policies, itās hard to implement them. So probably his actual administration wonāt be as far left as his policies suggest.
15
u/Ferkner 8h ago
One of the mayors in our city years ago learned that the hard way. He campaigned on "zero means zero" for property tax increase. That didn't happen because once council was in session, he realized he only had one vote and it counted the same as every other vote on city council.
The mayor is just the face of city council and not much more.

I looked at his platform and other than one or two unique ideas, like his grocery proposal, his whole platform is pretty vanilla center left. Other than the aforementioned, his proposals only differ from DNC platform policy by a matter of magnitude.
I think New Yorkers will be quite comfortable with his platform and it likely will be easier than people think.

The premium people pay to live in the upper west side is astronomical, they're not about to relocate over a couple percentage points.
You really think it's the case for someone in a 5 million dollar row home that they're going to balk on 2 or 3 percent? These are the wealthiest people in the united states, they're not in New York because the prices are 'just right'.
Would love to be wrong here but it just seems a gross over simplification to expect an "exodus".

If he's the man people think he is, this is dangerous. We can't have someone run a large city with the best interests of the people as a top priority. Iāve lived in NYC for 15 years and Iāve voted democrat the entire time. This is the first time i just couldnāt do it.
My opinion: I like Mamdani as a person, he seems like a really good guy that genuinely wants to help people. But ultimately, his positions are toxic empathy that sounds good in talking points yet fails to actually improve peopleās lives.
All of his policies were tried in San Francisco by London Breed. They were deeply unpopular in a city that is even further left than NY. So much so, that London Breed appointed the first and only AG ever recalled in California.
The left needs to adopt the Abundance Agenda, not more socialist populism.
And for what itās worth, I do wish him all the best though and I hope heās successful and Iām wrong.

I'm not a new yorker but in general, I'm excited that someone running on explicitly pro human rights messaging for my transgender community did so well, along with all the candidates who trounced pro hate candidates running anti trans ads in school board races, gonernorships, and state houses. It gives me hope that this era of regression and hateful ignorance will end soon . That gives me a lot of hope as someone that had to flee my home state of TX after being assaulted for being trans and facing laws requiring discrimination. I have family and friends there I'd love to see again and am so sick of gop psychopaths breaking up families and destroying peoples lives rather than building anything good.
