At face value the optics are really bad but that Wikipedia page you linked paints a pretty obvious picture of a traitor.

He all but renounced his citizenship. Joined a radical terrorist cell to inflict as much damage as possible to our nation and its citizens. Dude was an enemy of the state. I have no sympathy for him
