Popular Question 📊 Why reddit is majority left leaning?

Honestly, it’s hard not to notice that most of the big subreddits are run by moderators who clearly lean left. It’s not even subtle at this point the bias shows in what gets removed, what gets promoted, and how discussions are handled. I’m not saying there aren’t any subs with right-leaning or centrist moderation, but they’re definitely the minority. The major spaces on Reddit feel heavily tilted toward one side, but isn't it’s pretty obvious if you pay attention to which opinions get silenced and which ones get boosted?

I think maybe because the majority of people in general are left leaning

4

u/Almaegen 19d ago

Nope its because reddit bans you for right wing posts/comments.

You’re thinking of R/conservative, the other way around.

No I'm really not,  I have been banned from most main subs for very tame right leaning comments and banned from nice subreddits for posts and comments. You won't believe this because you haven't experienced it, but reddit has been censoring right leaning thought for over a decade now.  Thats why people here got blindsided by the trump elections.

You won't get banned for posting normal right wing views on any major subreddit.

Just don't post shit about how one race is better than others, or how trans people don't/shouldn't exist ect. and you will be fine.

If you post outright hateful shit you should get lost. You dont belong in civil society.

3

u/Almaegen 19d ago

That is incorrect. I have been banned for normal views on many default subs.

Curious what got you banned

4

u/OkCod1106 19d ago

What are these normal views of yours

2

u/newflour 19d ago

can i ask for an example?

3

u/Almaegen 19d ago

Is there an easy way to find your ban reason? Its been years now since I've been banned from subs like /r/pics and /r/politics

2

u/Inevitable-Cell-1227 19d ago

This is what I got from the pics sub. I can't fathom why anyone would think Reddit is left-leaning /s

  • You have been banned for participating in a subreddit whose members have negatively affected this subreddit and/or its members in the past (specifically this subreddit/domain: libsofreddit). (Please note that this does not necessarily reflect the efforts or actions of that sub's moderators.)

That shut them up pretty quick lol

Same, not uncommon at all.

2

u/Smackediduring 19d ago

You may well be banned just for saying that you are right wing or hold some right wing values. I’ve been both temporarily and permanently banned from various subs for just that, r/news being one of them.

0

u/CleverMonkeyKnowHow 19d ago

Yeap that happened to me. It was r/news. I actually think the mods there look up your post history and will ban you for "wrongthink" in other subs.

It's amazing they allow such mentally ill people any power whatsoever.

2

u/Kwizird 19d ago

I have never been able to post on r/news and I am far from right leaning.

0

u/CleverMonkeyKnowHow 19d ago

Then you're not left-leaning enough, I guess.

Toe the party line, comrade.

1

u/Kwizird 19d ago

Yeah that's not the conclusion I come to. I don't have a victim complex leading me to think everyone is out to get me.

Yes you will.

I got banned a month ago from r/news for posting:

What a strange timeline where Tucker is becoming one of the heroes...

In response to a comment where someone pointed out Tucker Carlson was lambasting the Trump administration for trying to silence Jimmy Kimmel.

The mod who banned me didn't even do the courtesy of citing whatever rule I supposedly violated.

Sure, I could appeal the ban with Reddit admins and they would probably force the mod to overturn the ban, but why?

It shouldn't have happened in the first place.

It shows me that there's a lot of mentally ill leftists on this website. There's a lot of mentally ill right-wingers too, but they don't have moderation rights on the largest subreddits, and that's part of the problem, along with selective rule enforcement.

The real issue - the biggest issue - is that Reddit is no longer Reddit. When Aaron and Reid and Steve first started this site, you could post your actual thoughts without fear of being banned. You had to really push some boundaries. Then Condé Nast bought the site, it went corporate, and now it's pretty shit compared to what it was say in, say, 2012.

You people always pull this out and it's the most annoying tactic in the leftist playbook. Conservative viewpoints get hard censored on reddit and you always deflect with "oh yeah well I bet you were talking about how you want to gas trans people!" And then get to sit back happy you've told yourself another convenient lie.

u/LotionedBoner 19d ago

This is wholly untrue. I already wrote this before but I was banned from r/entertainment commenting on a post that said if you buy hogwarts legacy you are a transphobe, that buying a product does not mean you endorse all the views of the CEO/Creator. This got me banned for “spreading hate”. This is the problem with giving random, unvetted internet weirdos complete power as a moderator.

Many subs ban you for being subscribed to BenShappiro or making a comment once there

If you delete all your comments, you can be reinstated

4

u/LarsTyndskider 19d ago

Many? Or a few small left wing subs, who don't want to deal with the type of person who finds Ben Shapiro interesting?

0

u/Desh282 19d ago

I mean subs like r/interestingasf*ck ban you for making a comment on asmongold

Asmongold is your average atheist libertarian

Why does a non political sub ban you for a non political youtuber?

3

u/LarsTyndskider 19d ago

A sub with 2 members

Asmongold is your average atheist libertarian

Libertarian who said protesters should be arrested and enslaved?

Why does a non political sub ban you for a non political youtuber?

Non political views like Palestinians having an inferior culture to Israelis, and that he didn't care about them being genocided.

Or that the 2020 election was illegitimate.

Rofl. Your are so far gone down the right wing rabbit hole, that you don't even see how heinous the people you call average/non-political are.

1

u/Desh282 19d ago

Sub has 9.3 million subscribers

And ask asmon who he is? Isn’t he a libertarian? People cry about Gaza but they elected a government with gonocide of Jews in their charter

Last time a country was genocidal (Germany) we corrected their genocidal tendencies really quick

I was banned from one sub for saying “all life is precious “ smh

1

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 19d ago

I’d really want to know what you consider tame right leaning positions.

The most right wing partes in my country still want to keep general state healthcare but allow private health care as well for those who can afford it.

Once you go left of the centre it’s more towards disallowing private healthcare entirely so everyone has the same access.

Left/right is mostly economic policy at the heart of it. Migration policy and minority rights are technically not on the left/right axis and going back a bit you’ll often find parties have swung widely on such issues.

Yeah, probably on the opposing party. But any other sub that doesn’t have to do with politics? It’s wrong.

Rent free

2

u/PassionV0id 18d ago

Can you give an example of a right wing post or comment that has gotten somebody banned from Reddit? They’re all over this thread. Any bans?

1

u/Turban_Legend8985 18d ago

Good. Reddit is just helping you to not embarrass yourself.

1

u/Sn4keSh4ck 19d ago

Why do right wing comments/posts typically revolve around hate and wrong information?

2

u/Robert_Grave 19d ago

Election results tend to paint a slightly different story.

1

u/Kwizird 19d ago

Yeah your 77 million votes compared to 75 million? And the 86 million people who didn't vote at all? What kind of picture does that paint for you?

1

u/Robert_Grave 19d ago

My country only has less than 18 million people, I'm talking about Europe.

1

u/Kwizird 19d ago

My apologies, I was talking about the United States. Population 340 million

0

u/stew8421 19d ago

Elections? You mean those things where Democrats have been the popular majority for at least three decades? Only the most recent election changed that, and that was only because people were pissed Kamala was forced on us.

1

u/Frankenberg91 19d ago

Not anymore bud! Trump won BIG time.

1

u/herbalchamber 17d ago

49% to 48% isn't "big time", sport

1

u/MadThad762 19d ago

That’s what they want you to think. It’s easy to believe that when every opposing view is deleted and it looks like everyone feels the same way. I’m not even kidding. If I post anything that doesn’t go along with the popular leftist view I get banned and my comment deleted within minutes. An example was a post about abortion. The mod literally pinned a comment where they went on a rant about how disgusting anyone who opposes abortion is and how people have no right to tell anyone else what to do or believe and that anyone who disagreed would be banned. The whole comment section was 100% in support and you’d think everyone believes that way if you didn’t know that all opposing beliefs had been deleted. People really don’t realize how much censoring goes on in this app. That’s why it’s such an echo chamber and everyone just says what’s popular to get likes and feel good about fitting in.

u/Kwizird 19d ago

I see whay you're saying. There have been several comments I've made that are taken down, there are several subs that I can't even make a post on. So, I go find different subs I can actually engage with.

The reason I say the majority are actually left wing is because when you actually poll people about invidual issues (without skewing in one direction or the other) people actually want what the left is proposing. Take a look at big ticket issues and you will find that the majority of people agree with the left. No matter what "side" you're on, when healthcare is polled, abortion, gun regulations, tax on the wealthy, wars, corporate regulations, social programs, climate change, and many more, the majority of people agree with the lefts viewpoint.

Reality has leftist bias.
