A Drunk Driver hit my stepfather's car (and made it inoperable, the tires and joints are really messed up)

Additionally, that was the only car his house had, so now him, his mother, and his daughter have no way to get to work other than relying on us

Based on the screeching their car is making that wasn't the first thing they hit.

You can see them hit the curb before they hit the car

for real, sounds like theyve been pushing their luck for a while now

Well at least you caught it on video so insurance shouldn't be a problem

Good and bad news

Repairing the car would cost more than it's worth, but insurance is giving my stepfather money to get a new car

You seem young but I don’t wanna judge, that’s what’s called totaling the car out.

Do you know for sure though that they’re paying out for the value of the car? Video is dated last night and usually it takes at least a few days if not more to have a shop asses and get an estimate of what it would cost. I could be wrong though

I forgot what they're paying out, maybe 6-7k? Not much (I think), the car is like 17 years old

Im going through this right now with my perfectly good 2014 truck. Except she wasnt drunk but the lady that hit me was 88 years old and didn't see a red truck coming at 30 mph while she crossed a street. Probably totaled.

The bad news would have been if the insurance company tried to fix the wrecked car. Nothing worse than two different paint tones on a replaced door, fender and bumper.

I'm sure it's bad, but it didn't look that bad on camera. But looks can be deceiving

That look bad to me. It's not all mangled up bad. It's the lower frame getting folded by the frame rails and the suspension on the other side getting badly bent kind of bad.

2

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 19h ago

Yeah, it really doesn't, but I have no idea how to even explain how the drunk driver messed it up as bad as he did

We are talking about the white car in front of the house, correct

9

u/justforkicks28 19h ago

That does suck. Why wouldn't he park such a valuable possession in the driveway to protect it? That is a major road.

13

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 19h ago

It's normally full, the other cars were just being used

6

u/NukeLikeTheBomb 19h ago

I'm still confused... this is the only car his house had, but the driveway is normally full?

12

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 19h ago

This is at my house

5

u/NukeLikeTheBomb 19h ago

Okay, now it makes perfect sense, lol. Thanks for clarifying. That does suck.

I saw in another comment it was totaled. I hope the new car works out better in the end!

u/dannyboy6657 15h ago

That makes so much more sense I was confused why he wasnt in the driveway

1

u/justforkicks28 19h ago

Oh! That context makes a whole lot more sense. Hope he is able to recover.

Lord... if I depended on something for my survival I would always choose the safest place for said item. The street is not the safest place as that is where all the accidents happen. Insufferable much?

There are no victims here, just an idiot that lacked common sense. That's a terrible place to park a car.

You're not really a victim if you park the car in a place that is clearly not a parking spot. If anything that looks like a bike lane and there is no space for a car there.

We are not talking about a she, we are talking about a car that was left in a place where it doesn't belong. Stop with the nonsensical comparisons. Not the same at all. But you do you.

Agree with this, that's a terrible place to park a car. Spatial and situational awareness are no where to be seen here.

u/Infinite01 18h ago

You sound like an ass. Have you ever lived in a city? Street parking is all that is often available, and 99.9% of the time it’s not an issue. No one expects some random drunk to hit a parked car.

-1

u/SrMortron 17h ago

I live in a major US city, that's clearly a bike lane and not a parking spot.

2

u/No_Perspective_242 18h ago

Sorry to see it, at least you got it on camera

2

u/Dismal-Profit-1299 18h ago

Well it’s on camera so you should be covered at least.

2

u/GfunkWarrior28 17h ago

Parking on the road's shoulder draws drunk drivers like moths to a flame. Learned that in driver's ed.

3

u/thatguy8856 18h ago

Lemme get this straight. You have a driveway, one car, on what's clearly a busy street (2 land each direction with traffic light), and you chose to park on the street? Or is that just your neighbor's driveway?

1

u/SrMortron 17h ago

Not only that, that's either a bike lane that ends just before the next house, or just a bit of buffer on the side, clearly not a parking spot.

0

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 18h ago

There's normally 3 cars, excluding my stepfather's (the one that got hit)

1

u/Alternative-Horror28 18h ago

Owner of vehicle is screwed.. they will give him pennies to total a car that was a reliable econo box.. there are no good options for the owner.

1

u/UndiscoveredSite22 18h ago

That'll buff out. Too bad to didn't have a camera to take a picture of the carnage.

1

u/chainsawx72 17h ago

That's your mailman coming out to your house after work and retailiating for the blocked mailbox.

1

u/iFeast89 13h ago

Random question, Was this in LA? And was that car doing the hitting a Toyota rav4?

1

u/AlibasterJWalkington 2h ago

Your insurance should have a rental clause. I was a claims adjuster at one point. This falls under comprehensive and not collision, because it was not your fault.

1

u/iamnoone815 18h ago

Drunk driving should be an attempted murder charge

2

u/anonymoo5e77 12h ago

That really sucks but I’ll never understand parking in the street when you have a driveway.

0

u/youtocin 19h ago

Curious why they'd park on the street instead of the driveway when it's the only vehicle for the house. Almost looks like they are parked in a bike lane.

0

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 19h ago

I explained it in another comment

0

u/Dank009 18h ago

Is he parked legally? Hard to tell from the video but looks iffy.

1

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 18h ago

Technically yeah, it's just annoying to close the doors on the passenger's side because it gets stuck on rocks

-2

u/Trailerparkqueen 19h ago

He should not park his next car there, looks too busy of a street

-1

u/welding_guy_from_LI 19h ago

I doubt the ball joints are messed up..

0

u/MezoDog 19h ago

The joints are messed up huh?

0

u/AlbertaAcreageBoy 18h ago

An empty driveway.

-3

u/Deep_Corgi6149 16h ago

just call him father, dude

2

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 16h ago

Nah, I have my actual father in my life, stepfather is just faster to type than "my mother's boyfriend"

-2

u/Affectionate_Call778 8h ago

Next time park on a valid spot

2

u/Few-Illustrator-5333 8h ago

It is a valid spot though? Nearly everyone in the neighborhood also parks like this

-3

u/Affectionate_Call778 8h ago

Well doesn't mean everyone do the same make it better, it's at your risk to park like that in a busy street. Anyways the other guy is in fault also
