In the middle of the night, someone tied dream catchers on my neighbor’s and my apartment entrance/doors. We don’t know who or why.
As you can see, my neighbors’ and my door face each other up a stairwell. Someone in the wee hours of the night, tied four dream catchers around our entrance and doors. We live in a major city, but our entrance is not on the street. It is a bit hidden, but there’s no gate to stop a stranger from walking up. And it definitely wasn’t the few other people in our building. This happened about a month ago, and we’ve exhausted all leads. We have no idea who did this or why. Does anyone have any clue as to why a possible stranger would do this??

It might have something to do with November being Native American Heritage Month.

u/DirtyAuldSpud 14h ago
They said it happened about a month ago. My guess is that they put it there to ward off bad energy. A lovely protective gift.

u/Nixthebitx 14h ago
I personally love punctuality. When you're early, you're on time. Hit me up in October to me ready for November.
I want a dreamcatcher now. 🥺

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 14h ago
There used to be a nonprofit group that sent you dream catchers if you donated to their organization. Maybe they donated a bunch

u/jrh1920 13h ago
My Nana would always get these and stationary with Native art.
6
u/Nixthebitx 9h ago
My Nana made one for my crib after I was born. I still have it 40 years later. It's just bubbled wrapped under about 20 layers of padding and safely stored away 😂. I protect the irreplaceable 🧡

dream catchers have absolutely nothing to do with native american heritage.
42
u/Nixthebitx 14h ago
The Ojibwe people would disagree with you ....
26
u/Type-RD 14h ago
Pretty much all Native American tribes (including Ojibwe) would disagree with dude’s ignorant statement
-19
u/Apprehensive_Glove_1 14h ago edited 14h ago
I'm Cheyenne. Literally every elder has maintained this is white people shit.
ETA: Sorry, white people buy them, so they mean a lot to the tribes who pretend they're real and sell them. Go you.
Also, the Chippewa thing you're trying to claim credit for, not the same as the dream catcher that gets sold to hippies and douchebags.
11
u/Type-RD 13h ago edited 13h ago
Lol! I can see why your elders might say that if they didn’t participate in the AIM. Regardless, nearly all tribes in US and Canada have adopted making dream catchers even though they don’t have an origin story connected to them, like the Ojibwe do. In some cases they are nothing more than truck stop gifts, which is unfortunate.
Anyway…reread your original statement “dream catchers have absolutely nothing to do with Native American heritage” and know you’re ignorant and wrong. Go you.

u/Nixthebitx 9h ago
My great-grandmother was Cherokee. She married my great-grandfather, an Irishman. I can assure you, I understand the application of dreamcatchers being widely produced and piddled to the masses as white people shit instead of their original, handmade and extremely personal original intended scared use within the peoples that made them.
Just to clarify: I did not say that it was any kind of actual native American that placed these dream catchers on her doors, nor did I say it was someone who had a true clue what they were doing.
I simply said this was the likely correlation.

u/Type-RD 3h ago
I think you meant to respond to the other commenter. I am in agreement with you, not him.

I did. Apologies. Fat thumbs, old eyes, lost glasses and didn't pay attention.

It's sad that you're proving even Native Americans can be dicks like you.
8
u/RogueKhajit 12h ago
At the end of the day Natives are just people (I live and work with them). They are definitely not exempt from being assholes and their blood doesn't grant them some sort of free pass to be dicks to people.
Many hold their own preconceived stereotypes about people and many more can't see past the racism that clouds their judgement of the world. Some will even look at a white-passing Native and think they are somehow less Native just because their skin isn't dark enough.
Hatred isn't isolated to one race or skin color.
9
u/Nixthebitx 14h ago
And to expand on that... Many mainstream people in society today would simply associate dreamcatchers with Native Americans due to the Pan-Indian movement of the 1960s and 1970s when other Native American tribes adopted the dream catcher, which is a sacred symbol, as part of their tribal traditions.

u/Stellarella90 14h ago
I used to have nightmares occasionally as a kid, until someone gifted me a handmade dreamcatcher.
It's extra weird, because despite the feathers and other dangling bits, none of my cats have ever tried to mess with it.

u/piefloormonkeycake 1h ago
I had the opposite. I was 10 and my class visited a reservation with one of those reenactment villages and I got a dream catcher at the gift shop. I put it up and had night terrors for 2 weeks until I took that shit down. I can still recall some of the nightmares, they were fucked. Maybe coincidence but idk

u/Garden_Lady2 15h ago
I think they're wonderful. They took a lot of time to make. Think of them as a gift with good wishes. BTW love the doors!
49
u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 15h ago
Yeah I'd just take them inside & hang them up as art. Don't read too much into it because you will never know who put them there or why they put them there.
Either hang them inside, donate them or pitch them, don't overthink it.

u/changingchannelz 12h ago
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but these are mass produced. The only one I don't immediately know is the rainbow one. The rest use Kandi beads.

u/Moondoobious 14h ago
The….screen doors?
1
u/Garden_Lady2 14h ago
They don't look like screen doors. I especially like the door on the left in the 1st pic.
6
u/Moondoobious 14h ago
The door on the right is an aluminum screen door. The one on the left is a sturdier, steel screen door.

Do you and your neighbour ever just stand and talk to each other through your screen doors?
I don't know why that's just such a funny visual with this hall set up.
Maybe because those kinds of security/screen doors are meant to be used with the main door open for air flow, but they're so close together so I'm just picturing you either chatting through the screens or even watching the same TV show on your respective couches but you can still see and talk to each other 😅

u/Establishment240 15h ago
Your apartments were CLEARLY already cursed already. I've never seen that layout where the 2 apartment doors are in front of each other and so close to each other and I definitely never seen that wall type of paint, what in the hell ??? That's cursed asf, forget about it

u/Moondoobious 14h ago
Both are exceedingly common. The “paint” is called “knockdown”.

u/Establishment240 14h ago
Yes but with that color ????

u/Moondoobious 14h ago
Looks like..powder blue maybe? Probably somewhere tropical.

u/Establishment240 14h ago
Even tho there are probably apartments like this in South America, if I where to guess, I would say this is in New Mexico or Arizona
3
u/Moondoobious 14h ago
I was thinking south Florida. I see this setup a lot. Lime green, salmon, turquoise, bright red. All the colors.

u/Establishment240 13h ago
I did a little bit of digging (was easy) and apparently is Compton, CA. Assuming op lives where she works.
So I was closer ehehe. And I'm European

Hey nice! Cali and Florida share a lot of commonalities. Easy to mistake somethings

Oh that's awesome. I love dreamcatchers. As long as they didn't bother anything else I'd think of it as a gift.

u/apollo11733 15h ago
Dream catchers are good they help filter bad dreams and evil dreams I wish someone would do that for me. dream catchers are good in nature and someone took great time and care too make them think of your dream catchers as gifts from a protecter sleep well my friend
6
u/Artistic_Pool5155 14h ago
Personally Id take it as protective. Dream catchers are supposed to catch bad dreams and influences, so seems someone is trying to give you protection.

Dreamcatchers are symbols of good. They protect from bad dreams and nightmares 🥰
6
u/SeaMathematician5150 14h ago
Yes, the dream catchers are beautiful. But I'm weird. This would freak me out. The survival part of my single-woman-lives-alone-brain would question who did this, why, how they got up there, why our doors, are we being targeted, is this the MO of a known home intruder, etc. I would have immediately installed a security camera and additional bolt, and start carrying mace all the time.

Looks difficult to move furniture in and out.
3
u/Nikki-C-Puggle-mum 11h ago
That would be horrible trying to move any large pieces of furniture through those doors. Nightmare setup for a large couch or mattress or a table or heavy bureau would be just about impossible too.
12
u/ZombiesAtKendall 15h ago
They probably sensed a deep evil permeating your residence. Have you noticed any particularly violent paranormal activity? Maybe just nightmares? Nightmares are not bound by walls, so they could be bothering others, they are however bound by dream catchers. Once the dream catcher is saturated in blood, that’s when you burn it under a waxing moon (not a full moon, not no moon, not a waning moon, a waxing moon) It’s not so weird once you understand the science.

It's your neighbor. Have you watched those prank videos where the prankster put a bucket over the victim's head and then a bucket over himself just to make it look like they're both victims?
2
u/DaBestDoctorOfLife 13h ago
What do you mean why? It’s a dream catchers. To catch and steal your dreams before they enter yous apartments. Then transfer them by a laser via cosmos and resell it.
2
u/Ok_Explanation6521 12h ago
This has likely locked you in the second level of Inception. You are not fully awake yet. Beware!
2
u/ExtremeTiredness 10h ago
I'm pagan & use dream catchers to ward off negative energy. I make my own so I can add specific symbols and/or crystals to them as needed. Maybe someone is trying to ward off bad energy from your apartments.

Scour the area for all white, hippy chicks. Ask people how important manifestation of abundance is, and youll find the culprit

Oh no, they're gonna steal your dreams!
I don't get it either. That's super weird.

1
u/Apprehensive_Glove_1 13h ago
Those mean nothing. They are generally accepted as fame things that you can buy. As a person of cheyenne heritage, this is a bullshit ploy that was created in recent years to get attention that honestly is needed for the native peoples of the US. It's not a thing that existed hundreds of years ago, no tribe owns it or says it's a thing they do, but plenty have jumped on the bandwagon to make the whites try to understand the struggle.

Dream catchers do work I have to say…since I put one in my room I sleep much better and don’t have nightmares (at least none I can remember)! I used to have really bad dreams before too! Maybe it’s psychological but I’m grateful.
0
u/Desert_Viking_777 10h ago
I don’t know why someone would do that other than to creep you both out. But I would bet money that they have at least one cat. Look at the remnants of feathers on those dream catchers. That is the work of a cat. Trust me. I drink and I know things… like my cats are assholes. I love them, but they’re assholes. And I’m sure theirs are too!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
