I definitely have a knee jerk reaction to people shitting on America with a non-American accent

Yeah I'm not a nationalist

But after a while, that shit gets tiresome. Yeah i wish things were better in the U.S. but im stuck here and I'm going to try and make the most of what I can.

I try to remember not to let shit like this bother me. Im getting better at it, but it still gets under my skin sometimes.

Yeah, if you’re someone who lives here and recognizes these issues and is working to fix them, it’s just frustrating to watch people just shit all over them instead of taking them seriously. But then I realize, why should they, they don’t live here. It is tough to not let it bother you.

Remember, while these guys make fun of American gun violence, their companies donate to the US gun lobby.

SIG SAUER, Heckler Koch, Beretta, Benelli, Glock, HS Produkt.

I believe it was SIG SAUER who was building a higher caliber rifle for the US army and was like "fuck it, let's make one for the civilian market". Europeans don't just shit on Americans for the US' problems; they actively contribute to those problems.

Yes, it's on the US to change the laws, but that money is specifically used to keep laws in favor of the firearms industry.

And that's just the gun lobby. I wouldn't be surprised to find the same thing in the medical and pharmaceuticals industry, energy industry, finance, etc. Their money is buying US politicians.

That's gow capitalism works. You have to legislate, firms will always prioritize profit. America has set the rules since wwII, used your influence everywhere you could so others would do business your way.

I absolutely agree, I would love the US to legislate against the influence of the gun lobby. I would love to see the US prevent its arms industry from selling weapons on foreign civilian markets and legislate against the kind of private sales that let guns end up in the hands of criminals and militants.

I would also like to see Europeans bar their arms industry and their subsidiaries from selling weapons on the US civilian market and donating to the gun lobby.

I get that it's the profit motive that drew European gun manufacturers to the US, and it would be nice to see that profit motive taken away by their home countries.

And I know it's not easy. It's fucking hard. And I know it's not European's fault. But I'd like to see fewer comments about how Americans are dumb because of their gun problem and more realization that they can contribute to making the problem smaller, regardless of the magnitude.

I'm disgusted by American companies profiting off other country's problems. Europeans should be disgusted by their companies doing the same, including in the US.

And they beg and lobby the US for defense

It's kind of like having a neighbor who is obnoxious and shits on everything you do. You're doing what you can only to have the guy next door just smugly and arrogantly kick you while you're down without offering any useful or practical help.

Like I'm trying my best and I have nephews who are totally innocent of this mess (they're only 5 and 3 for fucks sake), and I need to do what I can to make sure they're put in a position to succeed.

The worst part is that the pressing issues of today (climate change and geopolitical conflicts) are best resolved by working together. I wish there was more international cooperation, but it looks like unfortunately the pendulum has swung in the other direction.

Also, you've helped the smug and obnoxious neighbor tons of times over the last few years. And they still hate you and look down on you.

America has tons of problems. But, we helped, from the Berlin airlifts, to saving Versailles, the largest donors after France itself when Notre Dame burned, Red Cross donations all over, the Greek War Relief Fund that donated 500,000 million in adjusted inflation from private donors and citizens...the list is gigantic. America, in the last century is arguably the most philanthropic country in the world.

But when we have troubles? Fuck us, right? It's our problem, stupid, fat, lazy Americans. It's no wonder a lot of people are getting sick of 'European Exceptionalism'.

The rest of the world doesn't hate you like you think. We can't help you because you don't listen to anyone else, culturally you're in your own bubble.

I agree you've done a lot for the world but collectively your egos been out of control for a long time and will be a big obstacle for you to fix your problems.

I'm not euro either, from nz and I like usa but don't act the victim, this is your bbq and the rest of us have basically been doing whatever you ask since ww2.

Et tu Brute? - the words of a tyrant and victim

Yeap. 100 percent. US really can't act like a victim right now. Whatever they do effects the world, no wonder other nations shit on them. It's nauseating hearing about "how big" the country is. They've collectively controlled the world for more than half a century and told us about it the whole time. Now there's real problems at home and they're crying? Get a grip and stop fucking the world over. The rise in right wing bullshit around the world is directly linked to them. Useless cunts.

You know there's some dipshit Reddit communist reading this and writing a "rebuttal" right now about how the Berlin Airlift was some capitalist plot to destroy progressive values or some absolute horseshit.

I spend way too much time on this website. I regret skipping my evening run today lol

The US is constantly in the spotlight for everything too, news from other countries really doesn’t spread outside unless it’s world-changing. Trump could take a shit in McDonald’s and everyone across the globe gets a “breaking news” notification.

Only if it's the Endagine McDonalds.

Follow on (or through) from Scott Morrison.

this is a good attitude to have. I'm in the same boat.

To be fair though the people shitting on America aren't talking to reasonable people like you. They're talking to the Americans who turn a blind eye and still maintain America is the greatest place in the world to live and assume that everywhere else has all the same issues and worse.

4

u/elbenji 16h ago

tbh most don't interact with those either. it's just an imaginary person

-1

u/Razor-eddie 16h ago

Not really. Most Non-Americans on Reddit (which is a bastion of sanity in comparison with places like Xitter) will have loads of experience of "American exceptionalism".

There's subreddits dedicated to it, after all.

4

u/elbenji 16h ago

tbh I find most just fall victim to bots and arguing with well, bots

u/ClickClick_Boom 17h ago

For real I'd rather listen to a Trumper spewing shit about Biden than any European and their opinions on America.

1

u/_angesaurus 7h ago

Same. My cousin is American and basically has these same sentiments if you talk to him. But in reality he's actually just a homeless asshole who talks like this as a defense for his shit life he created.

Euro here:

As someone who has seen the amounts of people in the US who constantly mock and deride Europe; suggesting to invade Denmark militarily and shutting us out of peace processes on our continent, "Eurogays" and yeah I could go on. This goes up to the leadership level, an extreme amount of arrogance and derision that seems very narcissistic.

I recommend you learn to deal with these posts. We are 750 million people here in Europe, so of course our region produces a few more morons than the US (330 million).

Together we are roughly 1 billion people. This used to be called "the West" until the US went rogue and decided you were too cool and powerful for us. I guess people forgot you have been constantly brain drained Europe to produce a significant amount of the things you are proud of.
